Fallen is the first full-length album by American rock band Evanescence. It was released on the Wind-up Records label, and was their first album to be released worldwide. The album is the band's most successful album to date, with more than seven million copies sold in the United States, and over fifteen million copies worldwide. This album also earned the band five nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards; Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance for Bring Me to Life, and Best New Artist. The band went on to win Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance.

The album was recorded at Track Record Inc. & NRG Recording Studios (both in North Hollywood), Ocean Studios (Burbank), Conway Recording Studios (Hollywood), all in California. The strings were recorded at The Newman Stage, 20th Century Fox. Fallen spent 104 weeks on the Billboard  200, with 58 of those weeks in the top 20. It peaked at #3 on June 14, 2003.  After falling out of the Billboard 200, Fallen remained on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart for over 223 weeks. Fallen reentered the Billboard 200 for the week of March 13, 2010 at a rank of #192. Fallen placed at #19 on Billboard's Best of the 2000s Billboard 200 Albums list, as ranked by sales for the decade. In the United Kingdom, the album spent 33 weeks on the Top 20, and 60 weeks on the Top 75, reaching #1 on the charts. Fallen reentered the UK charts at #35 during week 41 of 2006, the week that The Open Door opened at #2. The album advanced to #34 the following week, before again leaving the Top 40 two weeks later. In the U.S., the album was certified platinum by the RIAA in April 2003 (having also gone gold earlier in the same month), double platinum in June 2003, and triple platinum in October 2003. It was certified four times platinum in January 2004, five times in April 2004, six times in November 2004, and finally seven times in June 2008. Fallen was the eighth best-selling album in the U.S. in 2004, with about 2.6 million copies sold that year. The album has gone on to sell over seven million copies in the U.S. as of July 2009, and over fifteen million copies worldwide.

Amy Lee said in an interview in Australia MTV's The Lair, that she never wrote together with Ben; she always started on her own, then presented her ideas to Ben and did arrangements. However, they were Amy's feelings that inspired many songs on Fallen. "Going Under" is about a previous emotionally and physically damaging relationship. This was the last song written for Fallen and would have been the first single had "Bring Me to Life" not been put onto the Daredevil soundtrack. It became the second single. "Bring Me to Life", also written by Amy Lee, is inspired by an incident that occurred while she was sitting in a restaurant. Lee has also recently stated that the song was written about her old friend, and now husband, Josh. Amy's sister, Carrie Lee, had a fascination with pop stars such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and it was the inspiration for "Everybody's Fool". Amy Lee said that Carrie, 8 at the time, started to dress as those two superstars and that it angered Amy. "My Immortal" was written by Evanescence's former guitarist, Ben Moody, with Amy Lee adding the bridge. Like all songs written by Moody, the lyrics are based on a short story he wrote. According to Moody, the song is about a spirit staying with you after its death and haunting you until you actually wish that the spirit were gone because it won't leave you alone. Ben also stated in the Fallen booklet that he dedicated the song to his grandfather, Bill Holcomb. "Haunted" is based on a story written by Ben Moody that served as an inspiration for Amy Lee to write the lyrics. The story is about a little girl that gets trapped in a mansion that turns into a decaying mess. This story was posted by Moody at EvBoard.com. "Hello" is written in memory of Amy Lee's sister, as is "Like You" on The Open Door. As of November 2008, neither song has ever been performed live by the band. "Tourniquet", written by Rocky Gray for his band Soul Embraced, is a song coming from a Christian standpoint, but it's about suicide. It is from the perspective of someone who has just committed suicide.

The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence’s songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band’s debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music’s sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest.

Given the cinematic sweep of Evanescence's sound, it's not surprising that they've garnered attention in Hollywood - the producers of the Marvel Comics–inspired film Daredevil  included two Evanescence songs on the movie's soundtrack: "My Immortal" and the propulsive single "Bring Me to Life." There's a gauzy vagueness at play in the band's sound, one that allows for surreptitious segues from sweet to sour and dark to light. Clearly influenced by bands like the Cocteau Twins and the Sugarcubes, the Arkansas-bred quartet rely more on shading than aggression, with Amy Lee's haunting voice delving into the obscure corners of songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted." The layers of sound -- not so much standard riffs as textured bits of melody - that emanate from Ben Moody's guitar beckon teasingly, then shift into post-industrial overdrive on desperate-sounding tracks like "Going Under." Breathe deep the gathering gloom.

David Sprague - Barnes & Noble

Fallen is the major-label debut of Evanescence, a Little Rock, AR-based quartet led by the soaring vocals of 20-year-old Amy Lee. Emboldened by the inclusion of its single "Bring Me to Life" on the soundtrack to the hit film Daredevil, Fallen debuted at an impressive number seven on Billboard's Top 40. But "Bring Me to Life" is a bit misleading. A flawless slice of Linkin Park-style anguish pop, it's actually a duet between Lee and 12 Stones' Paul McCoy. In fact, almost half of Fallen's 11 songs are piano-driven ballads that suggest Tori Amos if she wore too much mascara and recorded for the Projekt label. The other half of the album does include flashes of the single's PG-rated nu-metal ("Everybody's Fool," "Going Under"). But it's the symphonic goth rock of groups like Type O Negative that influences most of Fallen. Ethereal synths float above Ben Moody's crunching guitar in "Haunted," while "Whisper" even features apocalyptic strings and a scary chorus of Latin voices right out of "Carmina Burana." "Tourniquet" is an anguished, urgent rocker driven by chugging guitars and spiraling synths, with brooding lyrics that reference Evanescence's Christian values: "Am I too lost to be saved?/Am I too lost?/My God! My tourniquet/Return to me salvation." The song is Fallen's emotional center point and defines the band's sound.

Fallen [has] a creepy spiritual tinge that the new-metal boys lack.

Going Under

Now I will tell you what I've done for you
50 thousand tears I've cried.
Screaming, deceiving and bleeding for you
And you still won't hear me.
(going under)
Don't want your hand this time I'll save myself.
Maybe I'll wake up for once (wake up for once)
Not tormented daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom

I'm dying again

I'm going under (going under)
Drowning in you (drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (falling forever)
I've got to break through
I'm going under

Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies.
(So I don't know what's real)
(So I don't know what's real and what's not)
Always confusing the thoughts in my head
So I can't trust myself anymore

I'm dying again

I'm going under (going under)
Drowning in you (drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (falling forever)
I've got to break through

I'm...

So go on and scream
Scream at me I'm so far away (so far away)
I won't be broken again
I've got to breathe I can't keep going under

I've died again

I'm going under (going under)
Drowning in you (drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (falling forever)
I've got to break through

I'm going under (going under)
I'm going under (drowning in you)
I'm going under

Bring Me to Life

How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core where I've become so numb,
Without a soul (without)
My spirit sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back....home

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I Can't Wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up)
Before I come undone
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become

Now that I know that I'm without
You can't just leave me
Breathe~ into me and make me real
Bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I Can't Wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up)
Before I come undone
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become

(Bring me to life)
I've been living a lie,there's nothing inside
(Bring me to life)
Frozen inside without your touch,
Without your love,darling
Only you are the life, among the dead

All this time I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark but you were there in front of me

I've been sleeping a thousand years it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything

Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
Don't let me die here
There must be something more!
Bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I Can't Wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up)
Before I come undone
(Save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become
(Bring me to life)

I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside!
(Bring me to life.)

Everybody's Fool

Perfect by nature
Icons of self indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about a world that

Never was and never will be
Have you no shame? Don't you see me?
You know you've got everybody fooled

Look here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder
Oh how we love you
No flaws when you're pretending
but now I know she

Never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

Without the mask
Where will you hide?
Can't find yourself
Lost in your lie

I know the truth now
I know who you are
And I don't love you anymore

It never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

Never was and never will be
You're not real and you can't save me
Somehow now you're everybody's fool

My Immortal

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
Because your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

You used to captivate me
by your resonating light
But now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me

Haunted

Long lost words whisper slowly to me
Still can't find what keeps me here
When all this time I've been so hollow...inside

(I know your still there)

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, loving you
I know ill find you somehow

Hunting you, I can smell you
Alive
Your heart pounding in my head

Calling me, Hearing me
I wont let you pull me down
Saving me, Raping me
Wont you leave....

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, Loving you
I won't let you pull me down

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, Loving you
I won't let you pull me down

Tourniquet

I tried to kill the pain
But only brought more (so much more)
I lay dying
And I'm pouring crimson regret and betrayal
I'm dying, praying, bleeding and screaming
Am I too lost
To be saved?
Am I too lost?

My God, my tourniquet
Return to me salvation
My God, my tourniquet
Return to me salvation

Do you remember me?
Lost for so long
Will you be on the other side?
Or will you forget me?
I'm dying, praying, bleeding, and screaming
Am I too lost
To be saved?
Am I too lost?

My God, my tourniquet
Return to me salvation
My God, my tourniquet
Return to me salvation

(Return to me salvation)

(Ohhhhhh)

(I want to die)

My God, my tourniquet
Return to me salvation
My God, my tourniquet
Return to me salvation

My wounds cry for the grave
My soul cries for deliverance
Will I be denied?
Christ? (Christ)
Tourniquet
My suicide

(Return to me salvation)

(Return to me salvation)

Imaginary

I linger in the doorway
Of alarm clocks screaming
Monsters calling my name
Let me stay
Where the wind will whisper to me
Where the raindrops
As there falling
Tell a story

In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

Don't say I'm not in touch
With this rampant chaos
Your reality
I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge
The nightmare i built my own world to escape

Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming
Cannot stop fir the fear of silent nights
Oh how i long for the deep sleep dreaming
The goddess of imaginary light

Taking Over Me

You don't remember me, but I remember you
I lie awake and try so hard not to think of you
But who can decide what they dream, and dream I do

I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me

Have you forgotten all I know, and all we had
You saw me mourning my love for you, and touched my hand
I knew you loved me then

I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me

I look in the mirror and see your face
If I look deep enough
So many fears inside that are
Just like you are taking over

I believe in you
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me

I believe in you
(I believe in you)
I'll give up everything just to find you
I have to be with you
To live, to breathe
You're taking over me (taking over me)
You're taking over me (taking over me)
Taking over me

Hello

Playground school bell rings again,
Rain clouds come to play again,
Has no one told you she's not breathing?
Hello, I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to,
Hello...

If I smile and don't believe,
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream,
Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken,
Hello, I'm the lie, living for you so you can hide,
Don´t cry...

Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping,
Hello, I'm still here,
All that's left of yesterday...
Hello (continued)

My Last Breath

Hold on to me, love
You know I can't stay long
All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid
Oh...
Can you hear me?
Can you feel me in your arms?

Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light
It ends here tonight

I'll miss the winter
A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest hiding in a hollow tree
(Come find me)
I know you hear me
I can taste it in your tears

Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light
It ends here tonight

Closing your eyes to disappear
You pray your dreams will leave you here
But still you wake and know the truth
No one's there

Say goodnight
Don't be afraid
Calling me, calling me as you fade to black

(Say goodnight...)
Holding my last breath
(Don't be afraid...)
Safe inside myself
(Calling me, calling me)
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured life
It ends here tonight

(Holding my last breath...)
(Safe inside myself...)
(Are all my thoughts of you...)
(Sweet raptured life it ends here tonight...)

(Holding my last breath...)
