2013 LP Gramy Records GR-107-1
2017 CD/DVD Esoteric Antenna EANTCD21065

Recorded live in Bratislava at MMC Club, Slovakia, 14th July 2011. Track [16] recorded in Budapest at IBS Stage, Hungary, 30th November 2012.

Esoteric Antenna is delighted to announce the release of a live album by legendary guitarist STEVE HACKETT and the gifted Hungarian group DJABE. “Summer Storms and Rocking Rivers” was captured at a concert in Bratislava in July 2011 and a concert in Budapest in November 2012. The music within this release features well known Steve Hackett solo material such as The Steppes and Ace of Wands, alongside legendary Genesis material such as Firth of Fifth, Blood on the Rooftops, In That Quiet Earth and Los Endos.

Djabe formed twenty years ago and are one of Hungary’s most acclaimed Jazz groups in the world. Playing a fascinating fusion of jazz and rock styles and featuring a line-up of Ferenc Kovács (vocals, trumpet, violin), Zoltán Kovács (keyboards), Attila Égerházi (guitar, percussion), Tamás Barabás (bass guitar) and Szilárd Banai (drums), Djabe have performed many concerts globally since 2002. In 2007 they began their association with Steve Hackett, who has appeared on the concert stage with them, performing both Djabe material and Genesis and Hackett solo material. At the Garana Jazz Festival in Romania, Steve Hackett & Djabe performed to an audience of 13,000 people, and now Summer Storms & Rocking Rivers captures wonderfully the magic of this collaboration on stage.

The DVD (NTSC – Region Free) included in this two disc set features a concert in Bratislava in July 2011 and also includes bonus features of a short documentary, the piece Jacuzzi / Overnight Sleeper, recorded in November 2013 with the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra and the promotional video of the song Tears for Peace.

Although billed as Steve Hackett & Djabe, this is more of a Djabe FEATURING Steve Hackett product, believe me when I say, that it’s no bad thing at all.  Originally released as a double vinyl & Blue Ray set only. Thanks to HNE this now sees the light of day on CD & DVD.

The whole experience is incredible. The live CD is superb, crowd noise kept to a minimum, the violin drums & of course Hacketts guitar sound immensely crisp. Just shy of 79 minutes, it’s a perfect album to have in the car on a long journey or even just relaxing with a book.

I’d never heard any Djabe before & I’m beginning to wonder why they’ve been off my musical radar. Incredibly eclectic. A mix of prog, blues & folk with a tinge of Hungarian jazz (which isn’t really a surprise as Djabe are indeed Hungarian)

Steve Hackett is a phenomenal guitar player & the versions of  his classics coupled with a couple of Genesis compositions is simply jaw dropping.

Recorded & filmed in Bratislava back in 2011 & Budapest in 2012, The DVD portion of this release is beautifully filmed & the extras (Promo video for Tears For Peace, documentary along with extra performances from Hungary in 2013) make for a running time just over 2 hours. There are also 2 audio options on the DVD. straight forward stereo or (my personal favorite) 5.1 surround.

Every band member is wonderfully filmed & properly captured during their own extended phrasing & Steve Hackett is a joy to watch as well as to listen to. His use of chord structure & musical wizardry is sublime. He makes it look effortless yet oozing with raw power & emotion.

This is quite simply an incredible release with exquisite music. There’s great liner notes by Steve Hackett, a bio of Djabe, aswell as a few incredible live photos taken whilst on tour.

Steve Hackett’s collaboration with Hungarian fusion marvels Djabe dates back to their first performance together in 2007, but this DVD/CD comes from a 2011 concert in Bratislava, Slovakia. The live footage is a no-frills affair without fancy lighting or stage show but the musicians have no trouble commanding attention. It’s a wide musical net that they cast, from classical to world music, Hungarian folk to rock, with selections from Djabe’s own catalogue, Hackett’s solo albums plus a smattering of Genesis. Firth Of Fifth is transformed with Ferenc Kovács playing the lead melody on violin. Kovács is a man of multiple talents, swapping violin for trumpet on Ace Of Wands, which becomes a playful folk dance. Djabe’s Butterfly starts softly with Hackett’s guitar picking out the tune before expanding into funky fusion with great syncopation between Szilárd Banai and bassist Tamás Barabás. The dextrous Banai gets to kick up some dust in a dramatic arrangement of Hackett’s Last Train To Istanbul, while the guitarist himself never disappoints, from his refined acoustic playing to the eruptive solos in City Of Habi. It’s inspiring to find a prog veteran in such an adventurous frame of mind!
