Steve Hackett became known to the world as the guitarist for Genesis. However, he is still an active musician, releasing albums continuously and performing gigs all over the globe. Djabe is the number one jazz/world fusion band of Hungary. Along its 22 years of activity, the band received numerous awards, domestic and international, released more than 50 albums and performed in 42 countries. Djabe begin working with Steve Hackett in 2003, when he first played on the band’s album Sheaves are dancing. Since 2007, their joint gigs continued across Europe and Asia, and released albums together (on CD, DVD, vinyl and Blu-ray). At the Romanian Garana Jazz Festival they performed for an audience of 13 000. They released many live albums together, billing Djabe & Steve Hackett, with the last one released in February, 2017 via Cherry Red Records under Esoteric Antenna label, in England. The album, entitled Steve Hackett & Djabe: Summer Storms and Rocking Rivers, came out as CD+DVD Box Set, produced high sales numbers.

At the summer of 2016 Steve Hackett and the musicians of Djabe travelled to the island of Sardinia, and built an temporary recording studio in next to the 1000-year old temple Nostra Signora di Tergu, and spent 3 whole days recording. Between recordings, they explored the island and received inspiration from the natural beauty and rich culture of Sardinia. The 24-track analogue session tapes, were taken to Budapest and Tamás Barabás, bass guitarist and composer of Djabe produced a whole album from the jams. A unique studio album was born, washing away genre borders between progressive rock, jazz and world music, and moved into the category best described as instrumental progressive music. The album features a unique line-up of Djabe, with drums helmed by Gulli Briem, famous drummer of the widely known Mezzoforte. Áron Koós-Hutás plays the trumpet. The first studio album featuring co-written compositions of Djabe and Steve Hackett was finished, praised by music critics as one of the most awaited albums of 2017, around the world.

CD contains 11 compositions of 73-min length altogether. DVD contains the complete album in 24bit/96kHz resolution in stereo and surround version. The DVD also features a 5-min documentary of the recordings, shot by members of the band, along with a 21-min concert film. The latter recorded on July 3, 2017 in Budapest Jazz Club, Hungary, where Djabe performed with Gulli Briem and Steve Hackett. The concert video presents classics like Fly On A Windshield by Genesis, or the defining work of Hackett, Please Don’t Touch.

Esoteric Antenna is delighted to announce the release of the wonderful new studio album by Djabe & Steve Hackett, “Life is a Journey: The Sardinia Tapes”. The album is the result of an improvised session that took place in a church on the island of Sardinia between the musicians from one of Hungary’s most acclaimed Jazz groups, Djabe and acclaimed guitarist Steve Hackett. The collaborations between the band and the former Genesis guitarist and acclaimed solo artist began in 2007. Steve Hackett has appeared on the concert stage with Djabe performing both Genesis and Hackett solo material and Djabe compositions. This album is their first collaborative studio album.

Djabe guitarist Attila Égerházi explains: “When I came to my musician pals with the idea of this recording session I had no certain plans with the tapes. However, this was the exact way I always wanted to create my kind of a music, like we did with my band in the 80s. If I have to describe the atmosphere of these recordings, the first word that comes to my mind is tranquillity. All the notes and music were floating out from placidity”.

Steve Hackett adds: “It was great to play spontaneous music with such a talented group of musicians in the wild, rocky countryside of Sardinia, where we also felt the rich history surrounding us, echoing back to ancient times. Such a magical environment provided fertile ground for inspired ideas and a freedom of spirit”.

“Life is a Journey – The Sardinia Tapes” also includes a bonus DVD disc featuring a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album, along with bonus features “Sardo Moments”, an informal video diary of the recording sessions shot by members of Djabe and five tracks recorded at Budapest Jazz Club in June 2017 including interpretations of the Genesis classic “Fly on a Windshield” and the Hackett tour de force “Please Don’t Touch” among others.
“Life is a Journey” is a splendid, serene musical experience, born out of the surroundings in which it was conceived.
