Even Al goes electronic on this album with the help of Jan Hammer. It's hard to see now, but behind the guitar on the front picture is the monitor of a Fairlight CMI.

With this recording, Al di Meola thankfully left behind the pop-fusion sound that he had perfected with Jan Hammer. This was his first venture using the Roland guitar synthesizer and a drum machine. The technology used on this recording sounds dated, but the intent seems genuine. Jan Hammer's Miami Vice sound can be heard throughout, especially on "Sequencer"; di Meola places more emphasis on composition and production than on his famous technique. This turns out to be a refreshing change, but it would have been nice to hear him jam with Phil Collins on "Island Dreamer" rather than lying back on what turns out to be a disappointing collaboration. "Calliope" finds di Meola aligned with Bill Bruford and Tony Levin, although this too turns out to be a disappointment. Certainly a turning point in di Meola's career, but hardly at the level of his later output.

Robert Taylor - All Music Guide

In many ways, Al DiMeola only started to carve a niche for himself once he left Return to Forever. Adapting influences as diverse as flamenco, Brazilian, Latin and electronica into his evolving jazz-rock repertoire has resulted in a large catalogue of rich, diverse albums. SCENARIO sees DiMeola and keyboard accomplice Jan Hammer creating shifting mosaics of interlocking sequencer/synth/guitar patterns. DiMeola lifts off into soaring flights of fancy atop Hammer's sharp-edged digital faux-scapes. The guitarist's idiosyncrasies are brought into particularly sharp relief here--his love of Brazilian flavors, especially, makes SCENARIO one of his finest overall efforts. It also doesn't hurt that he uses King Crimson's erstwhile rhythm section (bassist Tony Levin and drummer Bill Bruford) to anchor his six-string acrobatics on the engaging "Calliope."

Scenario is a 1983 album by jazz fusion guitarist, Al Di Meola. It furthered the musical direction that became apparent on his previous album Electric Rendezvous and saw a greater influence of keyboard player Jan Hammer on the album. Other musicians on this album include Phil Collins (drums - "Island Dreamer)", Tony Levin (electric stick bass - "Calliope") and Bill Bruford (Simmons electric drums - "Calliope"). The Fairlight CMI was heavily used on some tracks, and is visible in the "Sequencer" video.
