Jamie Cullum returns to center stage of the jazz crossover world with an incredible new album, Catching Tales. A smorgasbord of jazz standards, pop, swing, and r&b grooves, this is the ultimate Jamie Cullum album. Jamie has collaborated with a range of music svengalis, including Guy Chambers, Dan the Automator (from the Gorillaz and collaborations with DJ Shadow), Salaam Remi, Ed Harcourt, and many more, but he's careful not to forget his roots. His brother Ben has cowritten a number of tracks on this album, as he did on Twentysomething.

From the Label

"Cullum's new album blurs genre distinctions and international borders."

Billboard

British pianist/vocalist Jamie Cullum's previous effort, Twentysomething, was an uncomplicated mix of piano-driven melodic pop with a jazzy twist and some reworked jazz standards. 2005's Catching Tales follows a similar format but falls short of its predecessor's simple approach by muddying up the production with dated electronic flourishes. Which isn't to say it's a bad album. On the contrary, despite some ill-advised attempts at would-be-hip DJ-style tracks, Catching Tales features more of Cullum's superb songwriting. Essentially a singer/songwriter in the tradition of such icons as Billy Joel and Randy Newman, Cullum is at his best when performing simple melodic songs with some jazz harmony that make the most of his burnished croon and verbal wit. To these ends, the beautifully melancholy "London Skies" brings to mind Joe Jackson covering a Radiohead song. Similarly, the romantic and folky "Photograph" reveals the often sardonically snotty Cullum to be a top-notch balladeer. It's also at these soft rock moments, when he isn't attempting to gun down the jazz canon, that Cullum's improvisation sounds the best. Also impressive is his mid-tempo swing-cum-soul track "Nothing I Do," which marries Harry Connick, Jr.'s neo-croon to Stevie Wonder's R&B harmonies. If Cullum's only attempt at contemporary hipness was his inspired cover version of the Doves' "Catch the Sun," the album would be a rousing success. Unfortunately though, Cullum's expansive vision finds him collaborating with Dan the Automator on the leadoff track, "Get Your Way." What may have been an attempt to try something new ultimately sounds more like early-'90s hip-hop jazz à la Digable Planets replete with scratchy vinyl record sound and canned beat. Also disappointing is his reworking of the Harry Warren classic "I Only Have Eyes for You," which, while an attempt at a Massive Attack-style trip-hop track, sounds more like U2's equally atrocious 1990 Cole Porter redo "Night and Day." However, when Cullum sticks to his piano and a good melody Catching Tales actually bests Twentysomething and easily shakes the "new-jazz" tag he has been working against.

Matt Collar - All Music Guide

Besonders hervorzuheben wäre da die Neufassung von Harry Warrens Klassiker "I Only Have Eyes For You", den zuvor auch schon Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, Doris Day und viele andere interpretierten.

On his third album, this English singer-songwriter vibes Harry Connick Jr. with bigger ears and a smirk. His pop-wise swing and lovesick croon can be seductive, but Cullum doesn't do much with them except charm a little. "Back to the Ground" is not quite Maroon 5, and the Doves cover "Catch the Sun" sounds like tepid Norah Jones. The near-hip-hop "Get Your Way" could be Jason Mraz -- who's more annoying and also more interesting.

Get Your Way

Dinner at eight, that sounds fine,
I suppose that means you'll turn up round nine.
Bought a bunch of flowers, just for her,
She says the burden's on the receiver.

I opened the door and you walked in,
(Sniff) The scent of wild jasmine.
The room, seemed to freeze in time,
My regular table will be just fine.

Radiant and elegant, you might be
But your concentration is so go-lightly
Both of your eyes reflecting the moon,
You really think you own the room.

CHORUS:
So What Game Shall We Play Today?
How About The One Where You Don't Get Your Way?
But Even If You Do,
That's Okay.
So What Game Shall We Play Today?
How About The One Where You Don't Get Your Way?
But Even If You Do,
That's Okay.

Try to pick it up, reading the signs,
It's turning out to be a real good time,
And who'd have thought that entertainment,
Lies in the winter of your discontent.

Now, sit at the table, face to face,
Queen takes pawn, check or checkmate!
I feel your foot brush against my leg,
I'm not that easily led.

You flutter your eyes and you toss your hair,
I have to say that it is kind of unfair,
Let me tell you baby now what's in store,
You win the battle, but I'll win the war!

CHORUS

This has been fun, I suppose,
Although my feelings are all juxtaposed,
But truth be told, I'm as fickle as hell,
But gentlemen never kiss and tell!

CHORUS

London Skies

Paint a picture,
Clear cut and pale on a cold winters day,
Shapes and cool light wander the streets like an army of strays,
On a cold winters Day.

Chorus:
Will you let me romanticize,
The beauty in our London Skies,
You know the sunlight always shines,
Behind the clouds of London Skies.

Patient moments you chill to the bone under infinite greys,
Vision hindered mist settling low like a ghostly ballet,
On a cold winters Day.

Chorus

Bridge:
Nothing is certain except everything you know can change,
you worship the sun but now,
can you fall for the rain...

Chorus

Photograph

er name was written on the photograph right next to her at someone face. It all had happen in that long grass. About a mile from her al place. i can't remember how it started and if it lasted that day in the sun.

we said that we would going to study hard. we had our books in stad of hands. she had a blanked over cansaf-bear. i canteny i was so full of fear. i'ts just another story cout up in another photograph i found. and it seems like another pushed life in many years ago from now.

when i look back on my ordinary, ordinary life. i see so much magic throw and mystic at the time.
i see so much magic throw and mystic at the time.

and there's a flush time that i tried that stuff.
i think it look a little green.
i remember trowing up behind the bush and i found it hard to use my feet. and who is that easily lade little boy is really off his head. it was the same that i kissed that girl. it's all on willy over hail.
i remember lovin cause to kiss me. she had to sit down on a chair. she teached like the snap she drunks and the cigarette she'd stolen from her mum.
and it's just another story cout up in another photograph i found.

when i look back on my ordinary, ordinary life. i see so much magic throw and mystic at the time.
i see so much magic throw and mystik at the time.

when i look back on my ordinary, ordinary life. i see so much magic throw and mystic at the time.

I Only Have Eyes for You

Are the stars out tonight?
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
'cause I only have eyes for you, dear
My love must be some kind of blind love
I don't see anybody but you
The moon may be high
But I can't see a thing in the sky
'cause I only have eyes for you.
And dear, I wonder if you find love
An optical illusion, too?

I don't know if we're in a garden
Or on a crowded avenue
You are here, so am i
Maybe millions of people go by
But they all disappear from view
I only have eyes for you
My love must be some kind of blind love
I don't see anybody but you

Nothing I Do

Instrumental.

Mind Trick

I
missed the opportunity
to
get you babe to stay with me.
Never thought, I'd regret the excuses that I've made
like a song, it will fade.

(Chorus:)
If there's music in the night
and it's really really right
it's the only thing I need.
It intoxicates your mind,
all your troubles left behind.
So come on and take my lead!
It's not just me who feels it,
music plays a mind trick.
Watch me forget about missing you!

So
I put my feelings out to dry.
Love,
one day again, I'll have to try.
Falling out, making up.
It seems such a silly game!
Why do I never 'gain?

(Chorus)

na na na ...

If there's music in the night
and it's really really right
it's the only thing I need.
It intoxicates your mind,
all your troubles left behind.
So come on and take my lead!
It's not just me who feels it,
music plays a mind trick.
Watch me forget about missing you!

21st Century Kid

There's maybe a way i can tell you
cos with everyday things continue
to get more compromised,
so who will fantasise
a new generation politicised

when things are done in our own name
are we as much to blame?
now it's become clear to me,
but only lately
and the ground is removed underneath

shout it from the brink,
you're louder than you think

Chorus:
21st century kid surrounded by illusion and confusion,
so maybe if you're holding out for the truth now,
could it be the greatest weapon?
could it be the greatest weapon?
your weapon

nothing is certain except a memory
and that's soon washed away by a low sea
now sit yourself down my one
and see what you become,
ignoring a smouldering gun

the white dove's flown
d'ya think we're on our own?

Chorus:
21st century kid surrounded by illusion and confusion.
so maybe if you're holding out for the truth now,
could it be the greatest weapon?
21st century kid surrounded by illusion and confusion.
so maybe if you're holding out for the truth now,
could it be the greatest weapon?
could it be the greatest weapon?
your weapon

I'm Glad There Is You

said i many times, love is illusion,
a feeling result of confusion
with knowing smile and blasé sigh,
a cymical so and so, am i

i feel so sure, so positive,
so utterly unchangeably certain
though i never was aware of loving you
'til i suddenly realised there was love in you and oh...

chorus:
in this world of ordinary people...
extraordinary people,
i'm glad there is you

in this world of overrated pleasures
and underrated treasures,
i'm glad there is you.

i live to love,
i love to live with you beside me
this role, so new
i'll muddle through with you
if you'll guide me through.

in this world where many play at love
and hardly any stay in love,
i'm glad there is you

more than ever, i'm glad there is you

said i many times, love is illusion...

Oh God

Instrumental.

Catch the Sun

Every day it comes to this
Catch the things you might have missed
You say, get back to yesterday
I ain't ever going back
Back to the place that I can't stand
But I miss the way you lie
I'm always misunderstood
Pulled apart and ripped in two
But I miss the way you lie

Catch the sun, before it's gone
Here it comes, up in smoke and gone
Catch the sun, it never comes
Cry in the sand, lost in the fire

I never really understood
Why I didn't feel so good
But I miss the way you lie
I've always been up and down
Never wanted to hit the ground
But I miss the way you lie

Catch the sun, before it's gone
Here it comes, up in smoke and gone
Catch the sun, it never comes
Cry in the sand, lost in the fire

7 Days to Change Your Life

Just one local call and you'll see
A happy path through life not for free
A little bit fat you can't get a girl
Short on cash I'll change your world
The only way now is straight up
Your deepest despair I'll make it stop
Just 19.95 all major credit cards
And you'll stay alive and you'll go far

In just seven short days
You'll change your life
All of your innocence found
You'll even lose a few pounds
See yourself making a mint
Quality time with your kids
Send me your money and I'll change your life

I know sometimes your life is a bitch
So come purchase my easy fix
I've been there myself sad fat and bald
But soon with my help, you'll have it all
Ill build you back up for the fight
You'll be so wound up your stomachs tight
Your the laugh of the party you'll get yourself laid
Surely you'll trust me once I've been paid

In just seven short days
You'll change your life
All of your innocence found
You'll even lose a few pounds
See yourself making a mint
Quality time with your kids
Send me your money and I'll change your life
Change

So many years ago I was so low and lonely and depressed
I hadn't left my flat in weeks and never even bothered getting dressed
And I was smoking weed and I was in a mess and that's when it happened
So I opened up the blinds to let the light in on my sorry life
I dreamed about success and money muscles women cars
And even wives and they would always attend to my every need
So do you see what you can be, baby when you're with me?

In just seven short days
You'll change your life
All of your innocence found
You'll even lose a few pounds
See yourself making a mint
Quality time with your kids
Send me your money and I'll change your life

Our Day Will Come

Instrumental.

Back to the Ground

Lately, i've let myself go
I've been screening the calls
From my friends to my foes
Although i've been weak
Far for so very long
I gotta get myself
I gotta get myself
I gotta get myself
Back to the ground
Sultry siren messed with my song
I'm gonna send her back
To where she belongs
I keep my enemies
Much, much, much too close
I gotta get myself
I gotta get myself
I gotta get myself
Back to the ground
When you're attracted to the danger
And tasting every flavour
Then bring it on and bleed yourself dry
Reality is twisted
Your mind's getting shoplifted
Is there underneath an innocent guy?
So clearly, i've let myself go
So does admission take my sins to a new low?
And when you're way down there
You'll find all those old friends you used to know
And they're gonna help ya
Get yourself back to the ground

My Yard

Instrumental.
