The Breeze – An Appreciation of JJ Cale ist das 22. Studioalbum des britischen Rockmusikers Eric Clapton. Es erschien im Juli 2014 als Hommage an den 2013 verstorbenen J.J. Cale. Clapton bezeichnete Cale oft als großen Einfluss seiner Musik und als einen der wichtigsten Vertreter der Rockmusik. Um Cale zu danken und zu ehren, bat Clapton einige Freunde, auf dem Album mitzuwirken.

Laut.de - Über die Qualität der Versionen lässt sich nicht meckern. Vielleicht ist die Produktion eine Spur zu glatt ausgefallen, doch fließt die Platte vor sich hin, dass es eine Freude ist.



In a sense, nearly every album Eric Clapton recorded after 1970 has been a tribute to J.J. Cale. On that first solo album, Clapton cut a cover of Cale's "After Midnight" and while he was under the spell of Delaney Bramlett for that album, soon enough Slowhand began drifting toward the laconic shuffle that was Cale's stock in trade. Clapton never hesitated to credit Cale, dropping his name in interviews, turning "Cocaine" into a modern standard, even going so far as to record an entire duet album with the Oklahoma troubadour called The Road to Escondido in 2006. In other words, E.C. owed J.J. little but after Cale passed at the age of 74, the guitarist decided to pay a full-scale tribute in the form of the 2014 LP The Breeze: An Appreciation of J.J. Cale. Working with most of his regular band, Clapton also invited a host of friends who share a soft spot for Cale, including Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, and the Oklahoma-based singer Don White, whose vocals are within the range of the departed Cale. All of these musicians don't distract from E.C.'s version of J.J.: everybody slides into an exceedingly laid-back, pristine roots groove, one that barely rises above a steady simmer -- only "I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)" boogies, but "Cajun Moon" skips along, too -- and one that's executed with the precision of old pros. Occasionally, a personal stylistic quirk stamps a track with a signature -- there's no mistaking Willie's idiosyncratic phrasing or Knopfler's Strat -- but otherwise, everybody is operating at the same relaxed pace, differences between the musicians disappearing alongside the distinctions between songs. It's all perfectly pleasant and a convincing testament to what Clapton learned from Cale, although its silvery monochromatic shuffles suggest J.J. was a little more one-dimensional than he actually was.

In the early Seventies, after the implosions of Cream and Blind Faith, Eric Clapton found profound influence in the California grooves of reclusive songwriter JJ Cale – who supplied Clapton with two of his biggest solo hits ("After Midnight" and "Cocaine"). Clapton repaid his debt to Cale once with their 2006 collaboration, The Road to Escondido, and he takes that idea a step further with this tribute album, conceived at Cale's funeral last year. Clapton's renditions can be a little too faithful: He nails Cale's throaty growl on "Cajun Moon," but the track fades out just as it might have opened up into a Dead-style jam; "Lies," sung with John Mayer, could have benefited from the charismatic delivery of a vet like Dr. John or Leon Russell. The best moments break free from the restraints of Cale's writing. Tom Petty delivers "Rock and Roll Records" with wry swagger, and Mark Knopfler puts his stamp on "Train to Nowhere" with gloomy Strat acrobatics. And just like one of Clapton's Crossroads fests, The Breeze heats up toward the end. Willie Nelson adds a spiritual intensity to "Starbound" – and, best of all, Don White, from Cale's native Tulsa, Oklahoma, howls the Burrito Brothers-style stomper "I'll Be There," grooving like a high-noon drive through the Baja desert.

Die Rückseite der Hülle bietet zwei Überraschungen, noch bevor man die Schutzfolie entfernt hat. Die erste: Obwohl Eric Clapton und einige weitere Stars dem legendären Kauz die Ehre erweisen, erscheint die Hommage bei einer kleinen Plattenfirma wie Surfdog. Dort stehen zwar Mittelkaräter wie Brian Setzer oder Glen Campbell unter Vertrag, doch handelt es sich sicherlich nicht um ein Major-Label.

Die zweite Überraschung steckt in der Liste der Gastmusiker, die Clapton zusammen getrommelt hat. In diesem Fall echte Hochkaräter: Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty und Don White. Moment mal. Wer zum Teufel ist Don White?

Die Suchmaschine liefert gleich eine ganze Liste an Ergebnissen. Das Foto eines Unbekannten im Booklet hilft weiter: Es handelt sich um einen Musiker aus Tulsa, der Geburtsstadt J.J. Cales, also um einen der Vertreter des Tulsa-Sounds. Dieses Etikett bekam der Stil zwischen Country, Folk, Rock(abilly) und Blues aus der Stadt in Oklahoma aufgedrückt. Auf seiner Webseite, in den vier Jahren vor dieser Veröffentlichung nicht mehr aktualisiert, bezeichnet er sich als Songwriter's Songwriter.

Einer also, der unter Kollegen durchaus bekannt ist, der den Durchbruch aber nie geschafft hat. Oder ihn vielleicht auch gar nicht wollte, genauso wie Cale. Der zog sich einst in die kalifornische Ödnis zurück, lebte in einfachen Verhältnissen und stopfte das viele Geld, das er verdiente, einfach in einen Hohlraum seines Hauses.

Diese entspannte Lebenshaltung beeinflusste seine Musik maßgeblich - und keiner kann ihn besser interpretieren als Clapton, dessen erster Solohit "After Midnight" im Jahr 1970 ein Stück Cales war, genau wie ein weiterer großer Erfolg, "Cocaine", 1977. Allein die Tantiemen dafür dürften Cale gereicht haben, um sich gut über Wasser zu halten.

Dennoch ging er ab und zu ins Studio und veröffentlichte insgesamt 15 Alben. Genügend Material also, um 16 Stücke für dieses Tribute auszusuchen. Dass "After Midnight" und "Cocaine" nicht mit von der Partie sind, überrascht nicht. Schließlich verfolgte Clapton das Ziel, Cales Musik einem großen Publikum zugänglich zu machen: seinem eigenen.

Über die Qualität der Versionen lässt sich nicht meckern. Vielleicht ist die Produktion eine Spur zu glatt ausgefallen, doch fließt die Platte vor sich hin, dass es eine Freude ist. Passend zu einer Aussage Cales: "Wir sind Wasser in einem Fluss. Das Wasser ist, wenn wir Glück haben, sauber, es sind ein paar Fische drin, es fließt vorbei, dann ist es weg, neues Wasser kommt", sagte er in einem Interview.

Die verschiedenen Gastmusiker drängen sich nicht auf, vor allem nicht stimmlich, sondern fügen sich der nie reißenden Strömung. Claptons Gitarre steht natürlich im Vordergrund, doch hört man auch Mark Knopfler und vor allem Willie Nelsons legendäre Trigger in den Stücken, die sie interpretieren, heraus. John Mayer hält sich vornehm zurück, wie auch Tom Petty, der so ruhig singt, dass man ihn kaum erkennt.

Auch die übrigen Musiker, allen voran Jim Keltner, der mit seinem Schlagzeug seit den 60ern so ziemlich alles begleitet hat, was Rang und Namen hat, stehen für Qualität. Doch auch hier gilt: Das Gesamtergebnis zählt mehr als die einzelnen Namen.

"So ist das Leben. Ich habe Glück gehabt. Ich kann sagen: Das Wasser rauscht vorbei, und ein paar Songs werden bleiben", beendete Cale im Interview seinen Gedankengang. Er hatte Recht: Seine Songs sind geblieben. Auch dank dieser Hommage, die Lust macht auf mehr. Im Original, natürlich.
