The potential for a collaboration between B.B. King and Eric Clapton is enormous, of course, and the real questions concern how it is organized and executed. This first recorded pairing between the 74-year-old King and the 55-year-old Clapton was put together in the most obvious way: Clapton arranged the session using many of his regular musicians, picked the songs, and co-produced with his partner Simon Climie. That ought to mean that King would be a virtual guest star rather than earning a co-billing, but because of Clapton's respect for his elder, it nearly works the other way around. The set list includes lots of King specialties — "Ten Long Years," "Three O'Clock Blues," "Days of Old," "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer" — as well as standards like "Hold on I'm Coming" and "Come Rain or Come Shine," with some specially written and appropriate recent material thrown in, so King has reason to be comfortable without being complacent. The real danger is that Clapton will defer too much; though he can be inspired by a competing guitarist such as Duane Allman, he has sometimes tended to lean too heavily on accompanists such as Albert Lee and Mark Knopfler when working with them in concert. That danger is partially realized; as its title indicates, Riding With the King is more about King than it is about Clapton. But the two players turn out to have sufficiently complementary, if distinct, styles that Clapton's supportive role fills out and surrounds King's stinging single-string playing. (It's also worth noting that there are usually another two or three guitarists on each track.) The result is an effective, if never really stunning, work.

William Ruhlmann, All-Music Guide

Riding With The King

I dreamed I had a good job and I got well paid.
I blew it all at the penny arcade.
A hundred dollars on a kewpie doll.
No pretty chick is gonna make me crawl.

Get on a TWA to the promised land.
Every woman, child and man
Gets a Cadillac and a great big diamond ring.
Don't you know you're riding with the king?

He's on a mission of mercy to the new frontier,
He's gonna check us all on out of here.
Up to that mansion on a hill
Where you can get your prescription filled.

Get on a TWA to the promised land.
Everybody clap your hands.
And don't you just love the way that he sings?
Don't you know we're riding with the king?
Riding with the king.
Don't you know we're riding with the king?

A tuxedo and shiny 335.
You can see it in his face, the blue never lie.
Tonight everybody's getting their angel wings.
And don't you know we're riding with the king?

I stepped out of Mississippi when I was ten years old
With a suit cut sharp as a razor and a heart made of gold.
I had a guitar hanging just about waist high
And I'm gonna play this thing until the day I die.

Don't you know we're riding with the king?
Don't you know we're riding with the king?
Riding, you're riding with the king.
You're riding, you're riding with the king.

Ten Long Years

Well, I had a woman,
She was nice, kind and loving to me in every way.
Oh, I had a woman,
She was kind and loving to me in every way.
Oh, she used to love me
And bring my breakfast to the bed every day.

Oh, for ten long years,
She was my pride and joy.
Oh, for ten long years,
She was my pride and joy.
I used to call her my little girl.
Oh, she used to call me, she used to call me her little boy.

Oh, it's all over baby.
You know I'm all alone.
It's all over baby.
Babe you know I'm all alone.
Well, the reason you hear me singing the blues, baby,
Yeah, you know my baby's gone, she's gone, she's gone.

Key To The Highway

I got the key to the highway,
Billed out and bound to go.
I'm gonna leave here running;
Walking is most too slow.

I'm going back to the border
Woman, where I'm better known.
You know you haven't done nothing,
Drove a good man away from home.

Live Verse:  When the moon peeks over the mountains
               I'll be on my way.
I'm gonna roam this old highway
               Until the break of day.

Oh give me one, one more kiss mama
Just before I go,
'Cause when I leave this time you know I,
I won't be back no more.

  First Verse

  Second Verse

Marry You

It's the sugar so sweet,
Kind I'd like to meet
You at midnight
And tell no one else about it.

I'm going to make you mine
'Cause I know we've got the time
Now and then, baby.
Hey, I want you to know,

  I want to marry you.
Isn't that what you want, too?
  I want to marry you.
Isn't that what you want, too?

Come on in the back of the '57.
Let me show you the way, the way to heaven.
You're looking so sweet, yes you are.
I'm sure that you've got some heat.

I've got you on my mind
You know you've got my time
Now and then, baby.
Hey, I want you to know,

  Chorus

I'm falling in love with you.
You make all my dreams come true.
I'm falling in love with you.

  Chorus Twice

Three O'Clock Blues

Well now, it's three o'clock in the morning
And I can't even close my eyes.
Three o'clock in the morning
And I can't even close my eyes.
Can't find my baby
And I can't be satisfied.

I've looked all around me
And my baby, she can't be found.
I've looked all around me, people,
And my baby, she can't be found.
You know if I don't find my baby,
People, I'm going down to the golden ground.

Goodbye everybody,
I believe this is the end.
Oh, goodbye everybody,
I believe this is the end.
I want you to tell my baby,
Tell her please, please forgive me,
Forgive me for my sins.

Help The Poor

Help the poor,
Won't you help poor me?
I need help from you, baby,
Need it desperately.
I need you so much, I need your care,
Need all the loving, baby, you can spare.
Help the poor,
Oh baby, won't you help poor me?

Say you will,
Say you'll help me on.
I can't make it no longer
In this world alone.
Baby, I'm begging with tears in my eyes
For your love, don't you realize
I need help.
Oh baby, help poor me.

  You are my inspiration,
Baby, that make me be a king,
But if you don't come to my rescue,
  I couldn't ever be anything.

Help the poor,
Won't you help poor me?
Have a heart, won't you baby?
Listen to my plea.
Oh, I lost my courage till I found you.
You've got what it takes, baby, to pull me through.
Help the poor,
Oh baby, won't you help poor me?

  Chorus

  Third Verse

I Wanna Be

(Instrumental)

Worried Life Blues

Oh lordy lord, oh lordy lord.
It hurts me so bad for us to part.
But someday baby,
I ain't gonna worry my life any more.

You're on my mind every place I go.
How much I love you, nobody know.
Yeah, someday babe,
I ain't gonna worry my life any more.

So many days since you went away.
I've had to worry both night and day.
Yeah, but someday babe,
I ain't gonna worry my life any more.

So many nights since you've been gone.
I've been worried, grieving my life alone.
Yeah, but someday babe,
I ain't gonna worry my life any more.

So that's my story and this is all I've got to say to you:
Bye bye, baby, I don't care what you do.
'Cause someday darling,
I won't have to worry my life any more.

Oh lordy lord, oh lordy lord.
It hurts me so bad for us to part.
Oh, but someday baby,
I ain't gonna worry my life any more

Days Of Old

(Instrumental)

When My Heart Beats Like A Hammer

When my heart starts beating like a hammer
And my eyes get full of tears,
Oh, when my heart starts beating like a hammer
And my eyes get full of tears,
You know you've only been gone 24 hours, baby,
Oh, but it seems like, it seems like a million years.

Now if I ever mistreated you baby,
You know I didn't mean no harm.
Oh, if I ever mistreated you baby,
God knows I didn't mean no harm.
You know, I'm just a little country boy, baby,
And I was raised right down on the cotton farm.

Oh, you give me so much trouble, baby,
Babe, that I don't know what to do.
Oh, you give me so much trouble, baby,
Baby, I don't know, I don't know what to do.
Oh, I ain't got nothing, I ain't got nothing now, baby,
Babe, and it's all on, it's all on account of you.

Hold On I'm Coming

Well don't you ever be sad
Lean on me when times are bad
When the day comes and you're in doubt,
In a river of trouble, about to drown.

  Hold on, I'm coming.
  Hold on, I'm coming.

I'm on my way, your lover
When you get cold, yeah, I'll be your cover
Don't have to worry because I'm here.
Don't need to suffer because I'm here.

  Chorus Twice

Reach out to me for satisfaction.
Call my name, quick reaction.

Well don't you ever feel sad
Lean on me when times are bad
When the day comes and you're in doubt,
In a river of trouble and about to drown.

  Chorus Four Times

Come Rain Or Come Shine

I'm gonna love you like nobody's loved you,
Come rain or come shine.
High as a mountain and deep as a river,
Come rain or come shine.

Well I guess when you met me
That it was just one of those things,
But don't you ever bet me,
'Cause I'm gonna be true if you let me.

You're gonna love me like nobody's loved me,
Come rain or come shine.
Happy together, unhappy together,
Won't that be fine?

Day may be cloudy or sunny,
We're either in or we're out of the money.
I'm with you always.
I'm with you rain or shine.

  Third Verse

  Fourth Verse

I'm with you always.
I'm with you rain or shine.
