Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career. ‘This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all,’ says Eric Clapton. ‘It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map - and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well.’



„Dieses Album war eigentlich so nicht beabsichtigt“, sagt Eric Clapton. „Ich habe die Dinge einfach laufen lassen. Herausgekommen ist eine Sammlung von Songs, die nicht wirklich auf der Hand lagen. Für mich kamen sie überraschend und genauso wird es für die Fans sein.“

Auf „Clapton“, seinem 19. Soloalbum, erforscht der einzige Musiker, der gleich dreimal in die Rock and Roll Hame Of Fame aufgenommen worden ist, die ganze Bandbreite von Einflüssen, die ihm geholfen haben, sein musikalisches Ausdrucksvermögen zu finden. Aus dem Funken einer Idee – dem Wunsch, einige Jazz-Standards aufzunehmen, mit denen er aufgewachsen ist, und dazu ein paar Songs seines Freundes J.J. Cale – hat Clapton eine umfassende Kollektion zusammengestellt: von hundert Jahre altem Brass-Band-Sound über unbekannte Country-Blues-Nummern zu brandneuen Eigenkompositionen. Das Resultat klingt entspannt und anders als alles, was der Gitarrist in seiner bisherigen Karriere aufgenommen hat.

„Immer, wenn es daran geht, ein Album aufzunehmen, stehe ich entweder unter dem Druck, etwas Großes ausdrücken zu wollen oder gar nichts“, sagt Clapton. „Wenn da nichts ist, wende ich eine List an und dann kommt oft etwas Interessantes darunter hervor. So sind einige meiner wichtigsten Alben entstanden, ‚Unplugged’ zum Beispiel. Bei diesem neuen Album dachte ich, dass wir sicher viel Spaß haben werden. Es gab keine Vorüberlegungen, alles kam wie von allein an die Oberfläche.“

Nach „Back Home“ (2005) war Clapton in verschiedenen Projekten mit anderen Musikern involviert, darunter einem Album mit J.J. Cale („The Road To Escondido“, 2006), einer historischen Tournee mit Steve Winwood (dokumentiert auf der Grammy-nominierten „Live At Madison Square Garden“) sowie einer Zusammenarbeit mit Jeff Beck. Dieser Geist lebt auf „Clapton“ weiter: Co-Produzent und Gitarrist Doyle Bramhall II gehört ebenso dazu wie eine bemerkenswerte Schar von Musikern wie Schlagzeuger Jim Keltner, Bassist Willie Weeks und Keyboarder Walt Richmind. Später stießen bei den Sessions noch Winwood, Cale, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint und Derek Trucks hinzu. „Das Album wurde in der drei verschiedenen US-Bundesstaaten und zwei Ländern aufgenommen. Claptons Begeisterung für den Blues hat sein musikalisches Leben von den frühen Tagen mit den Yardbirds und John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers bis zu seiner jüngsten Zusammenarbeit mit B.B. King und der seiner Überarbeitung der Songs von Robert Johnson definiert. Weniger vertraut mag dagegen das Aufeinandertreffen von ausgelassenen Jazznummern und typischen Pop-Standards sein, die „Clapton“ ebenso ausmachen. „Ich liebe die Musik von älteren Künstlern“, sagt Clapton. „Wenn ich Musik höre, gehe ich in der Zeit zurück. Die meisten Leute versuchen herauszufinden, wie sie auf die Überholspur kommen. Ich gehe den umgekehrten Weg, ich möchte herausfinden, ob ich diese Musik von damals hinbekomme.“

Nach vier Dekaden als einer der weltbesten Gitarristen nähert sich Eric Clapton, inzwischen 65 Jahre alt, diesen Songs mit vertrauter Sicherheit. Er findet einen Weg, um „Traveling Alone“ des texanische Bluesmusikers Little Son Jackson, J.J. Cales „River Runs Deep“ und das bewegende „How Deep Is The Ocean“ unter ein Dach zu bringen. Als er gegenüber dem Gitarristen Ry Cooder diesen Weg beschrieb, antwortete der: „Das kannst du nicht machen, das ist ja wie ein Peitschenschlag!“ Clapton schmunzelte über diese Antwort und überlegte, ob er das Album nicht „Whiplash“, also „Peitschenschlag“, nennen sollte.

„Ein Lied wie ‚Autumn Leaves’ dreht sich darum, was wirklich in unserem Leben passiert“, sagt Clapton. „Wir spielen Rock ’n’ Roll und Blues, aber am Ende des Tages sind wir doch alle Balladensänger. Dieser Song öffnet die Türen für eine Vielzahl von Möglichkeiten. Er darf ruhig etwas schmalzig sein, man muss ihn nur richtig spielen. Mit einer Prise Funk funktioniert er.“

Mitten in den Aufnahmen zu „Clapton“ musste Clapton ins Krankenhaus, um sich Gallensteine entfernen zu lassen. Während seiner Rekonvaleszenz hatte er eine musikalische Vision, durch die er dem ohnehin schon überraschenden Mix des Albums ein weiteres Element hinzufügte: „Als Eric im Krankenhaus war, kamen ihm zwei Fats-Waller-Songs ins Gedächtnis“, erinnert sich Doyle Bramhall. „Also haben wir sie aufgenommen, weil sie für Eric eine besondere Bedeutung hatten.“ Bramhall kontaktierte daraufhin Allen Toussaint, die große New-Orleans-Eminenz. Toussaint ist ein Experte, was dem virtuosen Komponisten und Komiker Fats Waller angeht. So entstanden die Aufnahmen von „My Very Good Friend The Milkman“ und „When Somebody Thinks You’re Wonderful“ mit zwei Klavieren, einem Trompetensolo von Wynton Marsalis und einer klassischen New-Orleans-Bläser-Truppe, zu der Trombone Shorty und Dr. Michael White von der Preservation Hall Jazz Band gehörten.

Obwohl dieser Dixieland-Stil mit nichts vergleichbar ist, was man von Clapton kennt, ist ihm die Frage nach dem riesigen musikalischen Umfang von „Clapton“ doch bestens vertraut: „Die Herausforderung ist eigentlich immer gleich. Wie gehe ich zum Beispiel mit einer Skip-James-Nummer um? Übersetze ich sie in zeitgenössischen Blues oder in einen Rock-Kontext? Zum Glück habe ich die Möglichkeit, Musiker auszuwählen, die ich kenne, denen ich vertraue und von denen ich weiß, dass sie etwas eigenes in die Sessions mitbringen, was einzigartig ist.“

Dieses Album ist die erste Studioarbeit des Gitarristen seit der Veröffentlichung seiner Bestseller-Autobiografie, die ebenfalls schlicht und auf den Punkt nur „Clapton“ hieß. Der für das Buch erforderlichen Selbstbeobachtung folgt nun ein Projekt, dessen 14 Songs klingen wie die musikalischen Memoiren einer ungewöhnlichen Reise. Bei den Aufnahmen dafür habe er ganz besondere Zuhörer vor Augen gehabt, sagt Clapton. „Wenn ich auf der Bühne stehe, muss ich mich auf jemanden konzentrieren. Auf meine Frau zum Beispiel oder eine meiner Töchter oder einen Freund, den ich lange nicht gesehen habe. Als ich die Aufnahmen für dieses Album gemacht habe, dachte ich oft an meine Großmutter, an meine Mutter und an einen Onkel. Diese drei Menschen waren die größten Einflüsse in meinem Leben, ihnen habe ich vorgesungen.“
Nachdem er das Material von „Clapton“ bewältigt hat, ist dieser Großmeister der Musik schon wieder von zukünftigen Möglichkeiten inspiriert. Nachdem er dieses Projekt aus einer Laune heraus begonnen hatte, fand er sich plötzlich in einer Situation wieder, die ihm viele unerwartete Richtungen offerierte: „Das nächste, was ich gerne machen würde, ist Latin Music oder noch etwas mehr New Orleans Jazz. Ich könnte elektrische Gitarre spielen, als wäre ich mit Louis Armstrong und den Hot Five zusammen. Klingt doch großartig, oder?“

Clapton is Eric Clapton†s first solo album in five years, but he hardly spent the back half of the 2000s in seclusion. After 2005†s Back Home, he went on a journey through the past, writing a 2007 autobiography -- also titled Clapton, although that†s the only connection they shared - mending fences with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker for a brief Cream reunion, establishing a lasting connection with his old Blind Faith bandmate Steve Winwood, and recording a duet album with his †70s inspiration JJ Cale. This embrace of history isn†t directly heard on Clapton but it†s certainly felt, extending to how EC relies on old tunes - blues and country, but also pop and R&B - for the bulk of this 14-track album. EC is no stranger to covers and the sound of the album is familiar, but there†s no record quite like Clapton in his catalog. The closest may be Unplugged, which also ambles along with an unhurried shuffle, but this boasts a greater musical range, mixing up Fats Waller and Robert Wilkins with Hoagy Carmichael and Irving Berlin, finding room for guests appearances by Winwood, Allen Toussaint, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Derek Trucks and selected members from Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Yes, it is eclectic, even dipping into a bit of a soulful soft-rock groove on "†Everything Will Be Alright,†" but not self-consciously so. Clapton flows easily, the blues never hitting too hard, the New Orleans jazz never getting too woozy, the standards never too sleepy, the sounds subtly shifting but changing all the same. It†s leisurely in its performance and its length, perhaps running just a little too long, but it†s hard to complain because the slow ramble is so enjoyable. Eric Clapton has never sounded so relaxed on record, either as a singer - he is supple and casually authoritative, a far cry from the tentative lead vocalist of his earliest solo records - or a bandleader, sounding at peace with his past yet harboring no desire to recycle it, even if he†s reaching back far beyond the blues that initially sparked his interest in music. He†s simply laying back and enjoying what he†s playing, winding up with one of his simplest and best records.
