Soul Shadows comes in the wake of Carrack's latest sojourn as featured vocalist and keyboard player in Eric Clapton's band for his UK and international tour, the result of their longtime friendship and mutual respect. The new album is the follow-up to 2013's warmly-received Rain Or Shine, which maintained Paul's recurring status as a staple of the BBC Radio 2 playlist. But where that album contained a mixture of covers and originals, the new set is comprised almost entirely of some of the best songwriting of Carrack's entire career, plus one lovingly-chosen remake: the Bobby 'Blue' Bland gem that was also a major R&B hit for Aretha Franklin, 'Share Your Love With Me.'

Three years after his last collection of original material, Paul Carrack slides back into a comfortable groove with Soul Shadows. Perhaps the groove is a shade too cozy, sometimes drifting so close to the middle of the road it seems to veer toward old-fashioned easy listening, something where it's all surface and gentle vibes. The high-class homespun production doesn't help in this matter: apart from the drums, which are played by his son, Carrack plays every instrument here, so the proceedings are tidy and immaculate, the cleanliness tending to soften the soul. The real human touch comes from Carrack's voice, which is as warm and easy as ever while also benefiting from the gentle assurance of an old master. He never pushes too hard, never gets lazy; he's happy to be easy and if the songs don't necessarily hook, this certainly is a mellow good time.

Paul Carrack, the hugely respected singer-songwriter who is the voice of many of the landmark British pop songs of the past 40 years, will unveil a stunning new album, Soul Shadows, on January 15, 2016.

The record sees him at the absolute peak of his powers as a vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and Carrack - who surely deserves the latter-day title of the hardest-working man in showbusiness - will accompany it with his latest, extensive UK tour, to start on January 7th.

Most of the album's instrumentation is by Paul himself, working in his newly-refurbished home studio, with his son Jack once again joining him on drums. "it's not a garage anymore," Carrack laughs. "We got it up and running and a lot of the songs have come from little jams, just me and Jack."

Six of the tracks on Soul Shadows have the addition of a hand-picked string and horn section recorded in the hallowed surroundings of AIR Studios in London. Other highlights will include a new song with lyrics by Paul's longtime friend Chris Difford of Squeeze, 'Bet Your Life,' and a guest appearance by Pee-Wee Ellis, the legendary saxophonist from James Brown's band who played on and co-wrote such greats as 'Cold Sweat' and 'Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud.'

Paul is, of course, the voice of such undisputed classics as Ace's 'How Long,' Squeeze's 'Tempted,' the Mike & the Mechanics anthems 'The Living Years' and 'Over My Shoulder' and many others. He was a distinguished member of all three bands, recorded and toured with countless others including Roxy Music, Ringo Starr, B.B. King, Elton John and the Pretenders, and has had his songs cut by the Eagles, Diana Ross and Tom Jones to name only a few.

As a solo artist, Carrack continues to enhance an illustrious catalogue that stretches back to 1980, and a measure of his standing among legions of fans, the first announcement of the impending release of Soul Shadows had it racing to the top of Amazon's pre-order chart.

Keyboardist/singer Paul Carrack’s honeyed and soulful singing voice has been his calling card for over 40 years, from his early days in Ace (‘How Long’ remains a standout from the early 70s), through stints with Roxy Music, Squeeze (he replaced Jools Holland), Mike And The Mechanics, and Eric Clapton’s band. Soul Shadows is the latest release in a prolific solo career that finds him at the very peak of his considerable powers, and features nine Carrack originals and a co-write with Squeeze’s Chris Difford (the smouldering ‘Bet Your Life’). A gifted multi-instrumentalist, Carrack handles much of the workload himself, with drums and percussion provided by son Jack and producer Peter Van Hooke who, crucially, brings warmth to the songs by using hand-picked string and horn sections on much of the album. The highlights are many; ‘Sweet Soul Legacy’ swaggers like Sam & Dave as Carrack namechecks his musical heroes – Jackie Wilson, Levi Stubbs, James Brown – even featuring a guest appearance from JB’s legendary saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis; ‘Keep On Lovin’ You’ is a luscious slice of Philly soul, and ‘Say What You Mean’ is a strutting slice of New Orleans R&B; ‘Sleep On It’ bounces along on a Stevie Wonder inspired melodica riff, and an emotive remake of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s imperious ‘Share Your Love With Me’ is the album’s only cover and one of its high points. The album’s title is clearly no accident, for each and every track is informed by the great performers and classic soul styles of the past. This is a genuinely uplifting album of blue eyed soul brimming with richness and warmth, ample proof that Paul Carrack still casts a very long soul shadow of his own.
