It's a wonderful thing that the Adult Contemporary charts are still
open to new music made by classic artists with sounds that evoke the
cool joys of the era its listeners grew up in. Carrack was never a huge
name in his own right, but as leader of Ace and chief vocal contributor
to Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics, his easily soulful, Steve
Winwood-like voice became iconic on the pop landscape. His Denon debut
captures all the summery, brass-tinged laid back soul-blues, pop-rock
joys that defined his heyday, with spunky and jangly tunes like
“She Lived Down the Street" and “Happy To See You Again"
leading the charge. These fun tunes are the most engaging, but
Carrack's moody vibe on “It Ain't Over" offers a nice, late night
balance with a little more heart. The release of this album coincided
with Carrack's 2003 “Ringorama" tour with Ringo Starr, which
allowed him to showcase these tunes among legendary friends onstage to
longtime friends in the audience.
