There was something off-putting about a compilation that started with the mantra, "This is real house music," before launching into some jazzy nu-Latin beats. As it was, the Café del Mar mini-genre and its lethargic, ambient, dream-filled template had been given a faster tempo and more freedom away from tranquil electronics, but this initial effort didn't make much of the opportunity. Bone City's "Feeling Kinda Blue" and Solaris Heights' "Fusique" were persuasive models of gushy guitar-laden house, for example, but the collection never slipped into a groove half as good as Café del Mar's usual consistency.
