Different Shades of Blue is the eleventh studio album by blues rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa. It was released on September 22, 2014.

Grandios, gitarrig, orchestral: Joe Bonamassa mit »Different Shades Of Blue«

Die Doku-Videos zeigen die Entstehung von »Never Give All Your Heart« und »Get Back My Tomorrow«.

Joe Bonamassa standen »Different Shades Of Blue« hervorragende Partner zur Seite.

(Audio, November 2014)

Different Shades Of Blue (J&R Adventures) is Bonamassa's first studio album in two years and the first album of his career to feature all original material. The result is a record with more of an experimental edge than previous Bonamassa records. It s a blues record that explores the outer reaches and the many different sounds that shape the genre. 'It s been a while since I've been involved in the writing on an entire album. So I decided I wanted to make a completely original blues album', said Bonamassa. 'I've really had to push myself to make everything I do better than the last project. I know the fans expect it. And I feel like I owe it to the fans to give them an original record after all these years'. To prepare for the record, Bonamassa took 2013 off from releasing any new studio material, a rarity in the tireless bluesman's career, and instead spent time in Nashville writing with Jonathan Cain (Journey), known for hits Who s Crying Now, Open Arms, and When You Love A Woman; James House (Diamond Rio, Dwight Yoakam, Martina McBride), and Jerry Flowers (Keith Urban).

'The writers really inspired me, and having access to really great lyricists and songwriters made it such a great experience', said Bonamassa. Recorded at Studio At The Palms in Las Vegas, NV, Different Shades Of Blue was produced by Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), who has helmed Bonamassa's last fifteen projects including his solo projects and collaborations with Black Country Communion and Beth Hart. To compliment Bonamassa s signature guitar style and vocals, Shirley brought together a group of musicians including Reese Wynans (organ, piano), Carmine Rojas (bass), Michael Rhodes (bass), Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Lenny Castro (percussion), Lee Thornburg (trumpet, trombone), Ron Dziubla (saxophone), the Bovaland Orchestra (strings), and Doug Henthorn and Melanie Williams (background vocals). 'It s definitely my favorite Joe Bonamassa record to date', said Shirley. 'It s an album that deserves to be listened to in its entirety. Luckily Joe s fan base really seems to appreciate a body of work and not just songs'.

Shirley said, 'I think Joe has learned the value of not underestimating his audience. He plays music as well as he can, and always tries to bring music of depth to his audience. We try very hard to make the records as multidimensional as possible and really try not to cut any corners in delivering them'. Bonamassa has twelve #1 Billboard Blues Albums (more than any other artist) and received his first GRAMMY nomination in 2013 for his collaboration with Beth Hart on the duo's sophomore album Seesaw. His 2013 solo acoustic project An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House was nominated by the Blues Music Awards for Best DVD and his 2009 DVD Live From The Royal Albert Hall recently received RIAA Platinum Certification.

Joe Bonamassa has moved far past his initial incarnation as a kid guitar wiz with a Stevie Ray Vaughan fascination, and has developed into an elegantly reverent guitarist and a fine singer as well, bringing a little R&B blue-eyed soul to the blues. For Different Shades of Blue, Bonamassa co-wrote songs with veteran Nashville songwriters Jeffrey Steele, Gary Nicholson, James House, Jerry Flowers, and Jonathan Cain, then took 11 of the songs and tracked them in Las Vegas at Studio at the Palms with producer Kevin Shirley and a solid band of studio musicians including Reese Wynans (organ, piano), Carmine Rojas (bass), Michael Rhodes (bass), Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Lenny Castro (percussion), Lee Thornburg (trumpet, trombone), Ron Dziubla (saxophone), the Bovaland Orchestra (strings), and background vocalists Doug Henthorn and Melanie Williams. Bonamassa used 20 different vintage guitars for the project, along with 13 different amps, and lists each one in the liner notes. Consequently, this is an album about guitar tones, as each song demands its own and Bonamassa empties the tool kit. The best songs here, like the poppy and R&B-laced "Love Ain't a Love Song," the hard-driving honky tonk blues "Never Give All Your Heart," and "Trouble Town," a slice of horn-driven garage blues, are vintage Bonamassa, blending all of his influences, from Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and Rory Gallagher to Jimi Hendrix and Hank Garland, into his own voice for the blues. The clear highlight here, and undoubtedly already or soon to be a high point of Bonamassa's live shows, is the stately and powerful "Oh Beautiful!," which alternates between hushed vocals and slashing, soaring electric guitar breaks, a sort of 21st century version of Blind Willie Johnson adorned with tone washes and blistering guitar. It's a striking and timeless recording, and a great blues song by anyone's standards. The problem here, though, is that with the exception of the above songs, and maybe one or two others, the songs on Different Shades of Blue shade toward the generic side of things, and no matter how wonderful and gorgeous the guitar tones may be, it's hard to make a generic song sing memorably.

Steve Leggett - AllMusic.com

Sound: There's little to say about Joe Bonamassa that even the most casual blues rock listener doesn't already recognize; the guitarist is one of the most exceptional musicians of this century that specializes in the genre. His distinctive English blues-inspired playing, which takes the apparent influence of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck while introducing his own unique approach into the mix, has captured the attention of both longtime blues listeners and prominent musicians alike. His playing style even appealed to Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple fame, who went on to form the rock supergroup Black Country Communion with Bonamassa, but that's a story for another day.

Longtime Joe Bonamassa followers have never had to wait too long to hear new material from the guitar virtuoso, with a new studio album or live effort surfacing almost every year in recent memory, however attentive fans will recognize that the recently released "Different Shade of Blue" marks Bonamassa's first album of all-new material in two years. While the wait has been comforted by an array of not just one, but five full-length live albums earlier this year, "Different Shade of Blue" delivers a familiar compilation of soulful, hard hitting blues rock indigenous to the style previously incorporated on Bonamassa's earlier efforts.

An upbeat pace is introduced on the brief yet impactful instrumental "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)," before we transition into the grooving Jimi Hendrix-esque rhythms of "Oh Beautiful!," particularly when it comes to the "Hey Baby" inspired introduction. With the addition of Bonamassa's powerful lyrical delivery and the song's climatic percussion work, it becomes evident early on that this is an authentic studio album, through and through. Soaring brass sections and a swinging guitar riff propel the humorously titled "Love Ain't a Love Song," whereas "I Gave Up Everything for You, 'Cept the Blues" reintroduces impressionable piano playing atop a crunching chord progression and choice vocal melodies. There's no radical alteration in musical approach to found here; instead, we find a collection of songs decorated with skillful musicianship and personal lyrical themes native to a Joe Bonamassa effort. "Living on the Moon" reinforces that point, with energetic guitar work leading the way through our guitarist's story of a significant other who's a little too clingy for Bonamassa's own good.

Lyrics: Joe Bonamassa isn't afraid to let his heart and soul out in the songs which comprise "Different Shade of Blue," which allows these blues compositions to really issue an impact. Devoid are any demonic growls or glass shattering operatics which usually determine a singer's either well preserved or overly abused vocal range in these sections; instead, we find a blues guitarist who serves overtime as a standout lead singer, and allows his soulful approach to stand proud while not taking the attention away from the actual guitar work. // 7

Overall Impression: Let's maintain the formalities: Joe Bonamassa offers a concrete blues rock anthology on his new studio album, "Different Shade of Blue." You won't find any dramatic studio magic on this effort, on what is largely a live-in-the-studio compilation of exceptional musicianship that any guitar addict will be able to appreciate.

Doch aufgepasst! Auch "Get Back My Tomorrow" gilt für mich als starke Nummer.

Hey Baby

Instrumental.

Oh Beautiful!

Oh Beautiful
Oh beautiful,if you were mine
I would write you letters and pour you sweet wine
Oh beautiful why you so blue?
If you can only see the way I see you

Oh gravity weighing on my soul
Keeps bringing you round back to me
Like dirt to a stone
Oh gravity don't you ever go to sleep
Might wake up in the morning
and she'll be gone from your reach

Oh beautiful, if you were mine
I would write you letters and pour you sweet wine
Oh beautiful, why you so blue?
If you only can see the way I see you.....

Love Ain't A Love Song

Happiness is a bottle, happiness is pain
Happiness is a woman who you love
'Till she goes on and shames you
Happiness is value, happiness is a poem
Happiness is a lie for you know the calm before the storm
Ain't nobody love you better, ain't nobody but me
And all I want is a fair shake at love
Get a little something for free

(Love ain't a love song)
Love ain't a love song
(Love ain't a love song)

Hip them all to the city
Hip them all to the scene
Hip them all to the woman you want
Bringing them all to their knees

Hip them all to the badlands
Hip them all to the stars
All I know is the woman I knew didn't get me too far
Ain't nobody love you better, ain't nobody but me
And all I want is a fair shake at love, get a little something for free
Ain't nobody work harder, ain't nobody love you more
All I know is the fall of a man wearing the crown of thorns

(Love ain't a love song) love ain't a love song
(Love ain't a love song) tell me baby, yeah!
(Love ain't a love song) love ain't a love song
(Love ain't a love song) can tell me baby?
(Love ain't a love song) love ain't a love song
(Love ain't a love song)

Living On The Moon

Hard to breath, the airs been stoler
Without my suit, blues been swollen
It's got as hades
And it ain't ever noon
'Cause hanging round with you is like living on the moon

Threw me out, guess we're even
Took me back when I was leaving
Something tells me it was all too soon
'Cause hanging round with you is like living on the moon
There are times where you're the best thing on earth
When the sun comes up we stop throwing the dirt

Hard to keep my feet on the ground
Love the ups, hate the downs
If I steer right I might make it to the dunes
'Cause hanging out with you is like living on the moon
(Oh, hit me now!)

There are times where you're the best thing on earth
When the sun comes up we stop throwing the dirt
Maybe we just need some space
I'll leave my bag here just in case
Sometimes I feel like I've been marooned
'Cause hanging out with you is like living on the moon
'Cause hanging out with you is like living on the moon

Heartache Follows Wherever I Go

Maybe I'm done crying all them tears
Maybe this love ain't a souvenir
I hope I ain't being a fool
'Cause love going wrong can be so cruel

Maybe I'm walking right into a trap
Maybe some karma just gettin' me back
Maybe this dust on my hand is gold
'Cause heartbreak follows me wherever I go
Winds in my favor, suns at my back
I don't pay those dues and I'm due some money back

You look like your
Life's been a mess
Was it just like me
I've been down to the bottom and I know it hurts
I've been kicked in the chin, baby
I've grown in the dirt
Winds in my favor, suns at my back
I don't pay those dues and I'm due some money back

You look like your
Life's been a mess
Was it just like me
I've been down to the bottom and I know it hurts
I've been kicked in the chin, baby
I've grown in the dirt

Maybe I left it all behind
Different town at another time
Cover my tracks, wear a disguise
Looking a little piece of mind

Maybe the truth is just a lie
Maybe there's no good reason why
Maybe this dust on my hands is gold
'Cause hearbreak follows me wherever I go
Hearbreak follows me wherever I go
Hearbreak follows me wherever I go

Never Give All Your Heart

She left a letter on the table
Said she'd be home by five
The smell of old coffee lingers on my mind
I want to wait to hear those footsteps
Climb those old creaky stairs
Every lonely night I miss her presence everywhere

I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love
I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love

Familiar places that we went
To become like dying vines
Each a painful reminder of love and better times
Such a hard time to get over
Such a deep love that's lost
From the sun, the morning dew
The moon, the evening frost

I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love
I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love
I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love

The heat of passion will deceive you
Make you a different man
Turns peasants to kings
Dry dirt to fertile land
So I've joined the walking wounded
Had my gun at my side
Some surrender, others march until they die
With the promise of you just enough

I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love
I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love
I cry to the sky above
Never give all your heart to love

I Gave Up Everything For You, 'Cept The Blues

Put down that two pack habit yesterday
Threw that show glass just to watch it break
My whiskey bottle turned upside down in the drain
Those wild women that's a whole another thing

I give up everything, baby
I give up everything for you
I got nothing left to lose
I gave up everything for you, 'cept the blues

Went on a diet, yeah I'm eating good
Gave up the things you said I should
Fit as a fiddle girl I lost ten pounds
So why am I so damn down?

I give up everything, baby
I give up everything for you
I got nothing left to lose
I gave up everything for you, 'cept the blues

Put out the reefer, no more getting stoned
Trade in my fast car for a motor home
Took all my demons, put 'em in a sack
How come I still fell there's a monkey on my back

I give up everything, baby
I give up everything for you
I got nothing left to lose
I gave up everything for you, 'cept the blues

I had the good life in the days I was king
Ain't nothing left now but the same old blues I sing

Gave up everything, baby
I give up everything for you
I got nothing left to lose
I gave up everything for you, 'cept the blues

Different Shades Of Blue

The sun's been shinin' down on the day and night
Gettin' away with murder, livin' a lucky life
All good things finally come to an end
Hit ya like a train if you try to beat it
Everybody knows that she broke your heart
Everybody knows that it's tearing you apart
The row you've been sailin' on sprung a leak
You won't admit, but it's down to make you weep

When you got nothing left to lose
Might sound good, but I'm not sure that's true
You carry the pain around and that's what sees you through
The different shades of blue

Tell by the way you hang your head
The way you cast your eyes and things you haven't said
You've gathered past ten years written on your face
Your whole damn life's been one big race
Everybody goes there whether they want to or not
Everybody starts to hold on to what they got
And start to settle in with the long?
Real life ain't, oh, you can't have it all

When you got nothing left to lose
Might sound good, but I'm not sure that's true
You carry the pain around and that's what sees you through
The different shades of blue

When you got nothing left to lose
Might sound good, but I'm not sure that's true
You carry the pain around and that's what sees you through
The different shades of blue

Get Back My Tomorrow

What goes around, comes back around
Your hollow words, they echo now
For you to keep, when you're alone
So, you can lie to yourself when I'm gone

It's a bitter pill to swallow
Can you taste the pain and sorrow?
Go on and beg and steal and borrow
But that won't get back my tomorrow
Hey yeah!

What hurts to learn will make you wise
Was it worth the burn to get to this goodbye?
I'd rather stall again on this dirt floor
Crawl my way back to the man I was before

It's a bitter pill to swallow
Can you taste the pain and sorrow?
Go on and beg and steal and borrow
But that won't get back my tomorrow
Yeah, take all the time you need
Ya ain't taking no more from me!

It's a bitter pill to swallow
Can you taste the pain and sorrow?
Go on and beg and steal and borrow
But that won't get back my tomorrow

It's a bitter pill to swallow
Can you taste the pain and sorrow?
Go on and beg and steal and borrow
But that won't get back my tomorrow

Trouble Town

I believe
Believe the devil came my way
I believe the evil things she had to say
I've been lost by the road side
Waiting on the break of day

I've been round and round
Shed my fair share of tears
I've been round and round
Wasted all my tender years
Now I'm doing all I can
To find my way out of here

Ya for me running, got me running
To where I just don't know
Got me running, got me running
To where I just don't know
Far from trouble town is where I gotta go

And I, don't I always tell the truth
And I, don't I always tell the truth
'Cause one look of that woman
Tell me what I have to do

Ya for me running, got me running
To where I just don't know
Got me running, got me running
To where I just don't know
Far from trouble town is where I gotta go

Ya for me running, got me running
To where I just don't know
Got me running, got me running
To where I just don't know
Far from trouble town is where I gotta go
(Far from the trouble town)
Far from trouble town is where I gotta go
Got me running, babe

So, What Would I Do

Home for a day
Six more nights, baby
When I go on the road
Feel my presence diminishing, baby

All I need is the truth and a faith
That true love brings

Bless your soul for loving me
And my faults included
Oh, I know
You're the rock
That keeps me grounded

I know it can be a long, winding road
You know I love you so

All I have is you on my mind
You're all that's left for me in my life

'Cause I want to know
You've seen enough with me
'Cause I will survive
This long time away

So, what would I do?
I could go on without you, darling
Oh, I don't know

Now I want to know
You see a life with me
I'll survive
This long time away

So, what would I do?
Just sit and suffer, baby
So, what would I do?
I could go on without you, darling
Oh, I don't know
