The Answers is the first album by Blue October. It was recorded in October 1997 at Sound Arts Studio in Houston, Texas and released in the United States in 1998 by RoDan Entertainment/Scoop. It is Blue October's only album featuring founding member and bass guitarist Liz Mullally, who also played piano on the album. For several years the band was not allowed to sell the album on its website or at concerts because of its contract with Universal Records. The album was only available by mail order directly from RoDan until an agreement was reached in 2005. The album was re-released in the USA by Universal Records in 2008, however the re-released version is packaged in a digipak and does not include the booklet that accompanied the original version of the album.

Many of the songs deal with themes of depression, including "Black Orchid", which is about suicide. Managed by Justin and Jeremy's parents under the name "RoDan Entertainment", Blue October released their first album, The Answers, in 1998, a well-received debut which sold over 5,000 copies in Houston alone. Due to a fan-based connection with ABC's KTRK-TV (Channel 13), Blue October was able to schedule early-morning news performance — the band's first live television performance. Other unreleased songs from this period, such as "Rust", "Colorado 5591", "His Name Is Crazy", "Gun Metal Blue", "Dollar 30 Gravy", and "5 Day Walk" can be found on YouTube. Blue October moved to Austin Texas in 2001 and appeared many times on local radio stations 93.7 KLBJ's morning show. They did several on air performances and special radio concerts as well as recently being active on sister station 101X.

A decade after its initial release, Blue October’s 1998 debut, THE ANSWERS, was finally made widely available, allowing fans of the Texan alt-rock group to hear its formative sound in its beginnings. Often recalling sensitive rockers such as Live and Matchbox Twenty, the band excels at thoughtful grunge-influenced tunes, as revealed on the spare, wistful “Breakfast After Ten.”
