The album is a live recording of the Japanese Tour 1972.
Concerts in:
Osaka on 15th August
Osaka on 16th August
Tokyo on 17th August.
Contains 2 LPS on 1 CD.
This one-in-a-lifetime-classic album contains tracks recorded in Japan
during August 1972. The concerts concerned have been released almost in
full in a 3CD set titled Live in Japan 1993. (Go for that if you want
three versions of all tracks!) A remastered anniversary edition was
issued in 1998, and it came with a few extra tracks that had not been
included before.
"..Purple's definitive metal monster, a spark-filled execution of the
typical Purple style...volatile stage personalities...technically
superior.."
Rolling Stone 5/24/73, pg.58
Not only could they kick ass in the studio, they could stir up a
hornet's nest on stage, too. This double-album (one CD) set recorded in
Japan includes most of their best material ("Highway Star," "Smoke on
the Water") and pushes the metal envelope even further. Ritchie
Blackmore is in peak form throughout.
Tom Graves, All-Music Guide
DCC took their first step into the heavy metal arena with the 'often
imitated, never duplicated' Made in Japan. Along with such classics as
The Who's Live at Leeds, and The Allman Brothers' Live at the Fillmore
East, this is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Originally
released as a double LP, DCC put both albums on a single CD and it
sounds better than ever. From the opening rocker, "Highway Star" to the
20-minute set closer, "Space Truckin'," this is what metal is all
about. Forget the posers, this is real rock. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar
work throughout the CD is sublime, and the rest of the band are no
slouches either. Check out the middle section of "Child in Time."
Blackmore wails on lead, and Ian Paice's jazz-influenced fills are
outstanding. When the jam is finished, all you hear is the quiet and
attentive Japanese crowd briefly before the band goes back into the
last verse. What you won't hear is hiss. The dynamics on this track in
particular are breathtaking. Also, for the first time, you can
understand what vocalist Ian Gillan is saying to the crowd before the
final section of the song. Made in Japan contains a live version of
what is surely one of the biggest classic rock songs of all time,
"Smoke on the Water." The polite Japanese audiences on these three
nights had no idea they were about to witness part of rock history.
Deep Purple were at their creative peak at this point in their career,
and proved it time and time again on this album. You don't believe me?
Listen to "Strange Kind of Woman" and "Lazy." Nothing more needs to be
said. The musicianship on Made in Japan is superb, and the sound
quality on DCC's gold CD is even better. All of the original album
labels are reproduced in the booklet for the vinyl fans, along with a
brief history of the band. If by some chance you're one of the poor
souls that don't already have this album, you need it. If you're like
most of us and already have a copy, you still need this CD. What are
you waiting for? Get away from your PC, stop reading this review, and
get out and pick up a copy now!
"Dieser mitreißende Mix aus musikalischer Potenz und Power, aus
griffigen Riffs und ellenlangen Improvisationen, aus rasanter

an der Spitze." , All-Music Guide **** "Not only could they kick ass in

Gepäck, schwelgten Deep Purple in einigen großartigen, in

Time", "Smoke On The Water" oder "Strange Kind Of Woman".
3-CD-Set "Live In Japan" (EMI 8 27726 2). Das auf Doppel-LP für
Jahrzehnte maßstäbesetzende Konzentrat "Made In Japan"
paßte auf eine CD (EMI 7 48050 2). Wozu jetzt also die Doppel-CD?
Osaka-Versionen vom 15. August).

Oah nobody gonna take my car
I'm gonna race it to the ground
Nobody gonna beat my car
It's gonna break the speed of sound
Oh it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power
Big fat tyres and everything
I love it and I need it, I bleed it
Yeah it's a wild hurricane
Alright hold tight, I'm a highway star
Nobody gonna take my girl
I'm gonna keep her to the end
Nobody gonna have my girl
She stays close on every bend
Oh she's a killing machine
She's got everything
A moving mouth
Body control and everything
I love her an' I need her, I seed her
Yeah she turns me on
Alright hold tight, I'm a highway star
Nobody gonna take my head
I got speed inside my brain
Nobody gonna steal my head
Now that I'm on the road again
Oh I'm in heaven again
I've got everything
Like a moving ground
An open road and everything
I love it and I need it, I seed it
Eight cylinders all mine
Alright hold tight, I'm a highway star
Nobody gonna take my car
I'm gonna race it to the ground
Nobody gonna beat my car
It's gonna break the speed of sound
Oh it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power
Big fat tyres and everything
I love it and I need it, I bleed it
Yeah it's a mad hurricane
Alright hold tight, I'm a highway star
I'm a highway star
I'm a highway star
Child In Time
Sweet child in time you'll see the line
The line that's drawn between the good and the bad
See the blind man shooting at the world
Bullets flying taking toll
If you've been bad, Lord I bet you have
And you've been hit by flying lead
You'd better close your eyes and bow your head
And wait for the ricochet
Smoke On The Water
We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky & Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
The Mule
No one sees the things you do
Because I stand in front of you
But you drive me all the time
Put evil in my mind
Used to sing and say my prayers
Live my life without a care
Now I have become a fool
Because I listened to the mule
How can I change when my mind is a friend of a Lucifer hid in the ground
Just another slave for the mule
Strange Kind Of Woman
There once was a woman
A strange kind of woman
The kind that gets written down in history
Her name was Nancy
Her face was nothing fancy
She left a trail of happiness and misery
I loved her
Everybody loved her
She loved everyone and gave them good return
I tried to take her
I even tried to break her
She said I ain't for takin' won't you ever learn
I want you I need you I gotta be near you
I spent my money as I took my turn
I want you I need you I gotta be near you
Ooh I got a strange kind of woman
She looked like a raver
But I could never please her
On Wednesday mornings boy you can't go far
I couldn't get her
But things got better--she said
Saturday nights from now on baby you're my star
She finally said she loved me
I wed her in a hurry
No more callers and I glowed with pride
I'm dreaming
I feel like screaming
I won my woman just before she died
I want you I need you I gotta be near you
I spent my money as I took my turn
I want you I need you I gotta be near you
Ooh I had a strange kind of woman
Lazy
You're lazy just stay in bed
You're lazy just stay in bed
You don't want no money
You don't want no bread
If you're drowning you don't clutch no straw
If you're drowning you don't clutch no straw
You don't want to live you don't want to cry no more
Well my trying ain't done no good
I said my trying ain't done no good
You don't make no effort no not like you should
Lazy you just stay in bed
Lazy you just stay in bed
You don't want no money
You don't want no bread
Space Truckin'
We had a lot of luck on Venus
We always had a ball on Mars
Meeting all the groovey people
We've rocked the Milky Way so far
We danced around with Borealice
We're space truckin' round the the stars
Come on let's go Space Truckin'
Remember when we did the moonshot
And Pony Trekker led the way
We'd move to the Canaveral moonstop
And everynaut would dance and sway
We got music in our solar system
We're space truckin' round the stars
Come on let's go Space Truckin'
The fireball that we rode was moving
But now we've got a new machine
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah the freaks said
Man those cats can really swing
They got music in their solar system
They've rocked around the Milky Way
They dance around the Borealice
They're Space Truckin' everyday
Come on
CD Two:
Black Night
Black night is not right
I don't feel so bright
I don't care to sit tight
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home
I don't need a dark tree
I don't want a rough sea
I can't feel, I can't see
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home
Black night, black night
I don't need black night
I can't see dark light
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home
Speed King
Good golly said little Miss Molly

Heard headed woman,soft heart man

Take a little rice, take a little beans gonna rock and roll down to
New Orleans
Lucille
Lucille, come back where you belong.
Oh, Lucille, come back where you belong.
I ain't nothing to ya, sing you such a beautiful song.
I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight.
I asked her friends about her but all their lips were tight.
Lucille, come back where you Belong.
I ain't nothing to ya, sing you such a beautiful song.
