Is the title of Zucchero's new album which will be released as follows: on September 14, 2001 in Italy, on September 17 in Europe and nearly a month later in North and South America and worldwide. Shake is produced by Zucchero and Riccardo Rustici and arranged by Zucchero, Rustici and Luciano Luisi.

SHAKE is an album full of energy and sensuality; by sensuality Zucchero means a pleasure coming from his mind, his brain rather than his body, a pleasure that seduces and intrigues him. Even the CD cover designed with several fruits refers to this idea: in fact, fruit is very sweet and juicy: its forms and colours make it very sensual as well as a source of double entendres so dear to him.

SHAKE has more soul than the previous albums; its sounds and arrangements deliberately reflect the rhythms of Motown, Stax of the sixties and seventies which have been reproduced at the studio.
Peculiar to this album are the many black voices, partly computerized, as if they were sounds and arrangements, and partly recorded at the studio, such as John Lee Hooker, Chance or Arthur Miles. Some of these voices belong to spirituals and gospel songs of the fifties, recorded "a cappella". The same applies to some guitars, pianos and strings, making the sound of this album unique.
The album was written last winter (Zucchero's perfect time for writing) and in the first months of this year, partly at Lunisiana Soul -Zucchero's farm at Pontremoli - (it's an anagram of Louisiana e Lunigiana), partly at Roncocesi, his birthplace and in Tupelo, Mississipi, San Francisco, at the Umbi Studios, Sausalito, in the Napa Valley and on the Po Delta.
The album begins with a sentence spoken in Emilian dialect, and the spirit of the Po Delta where Zucchero grew up, and which he identifies with the Mississippi River, is felt throughout this album.
"Old" and new musicians perform: Luciano Luisi at the keyboards, Hammond organ and piano, David Sancious on Hammond organ and Rhodes, Polo Jones and Pino Palladino play bass, Zachary Alford - a former drummer with Bruce Springsteen - at the drums, Corrado Rustici plays electric and acoustic guitars, Roy Rogers plays the slide guitar. Vocals: Mino Vergnahi, Arthur Miles, James Thompson, Sarah Eden Davis, Corrado Rustici, Zucchero e Chance.
Chance is an exceptional black singer met in Los Angeles and well-known in the American

"hip hop" and "disco" circuit; her voice is reminiscent of Aretha Franklin at the start of her career. Artistically, Zucchero fell in love with her, just like he did with Lisa Hunt.
Zucchero's duet with John Lee Hooker is quite moving and full of mystery. This album is dedicated to him.

Programming was entrusted entirely to John O'Brien, a deejay and programmer of the 'hip hop' circuit, born in New Orleans; he owns countless records, some extremely old, all original. He did a lot of research, contributed with many ideas and reproduced quite a number of sounds using old equipment dating back to the fifties.
Pasquale Panella and Francesco De Gregori, both highly regarded by Zucchero and to whom he is greatly thankful, wrote some of the lyrics.

This album also marks a change in Zucchero's management: Roger Forrester, who has always worked with famous blues artists - starting with Jim Hendrix and subsequently and for a long time with Eric Clapton - and who wanted Zucchero on the Clapton World Tour in 90/91, is his new manager.


THE 11 SONGS

SENTO LE CAMPANE (I hear bells)
Written entirely by Zucchero (music and lyrics) last March at the Lunisiana Soul, his farm at Pontremoli, where all his songs have been created.
It is about one of those evenings when everything goes wrong, when you need to let yourself go in an outdated bar, talking to Gino, a barman and friend, who's not too nice, like a dog that barks but doesn't bite, going straight to the point.

MUSIC IN ME
The music was written by Zucchero and Robix, lyrics by Zucchero who plays a Treached Piano and a Farfisa organ. This song was created by Zucchero last March at Lunisiana Soul. Pino Palladino plays bass.

PORCA L'OCA (Damn it)
Music and lyrics by Zucchero, written last April at the Lunisiana Soul. David Sancious plays Hammond organ and acoustic piano and Roy Rogers plays the electric slide guitar. It includes a sample of 'What I'd say' by Ray Charles.

ALI D'ORO (Golden Wings)
It was written last April at Tupelo along the banks of Mississippi. Music by Zucchero and Luciano Luisi. It is the only duet in the album sung with the great John Lee Hooker, who died recently and to whom this album is dedicated.

AHUM
Music by Zucchero and Robix, lyric by Zucchero, it was written last April in San Francisco. Pino Palladino plays bass, Davide "Danzy" Devito is at the drums, Robix took care of programming. It includes a sample of "Just The Way You Are " by Berry White.
After 'Baila (sexy thing)', 'Ahum' is the second single which will be out on September 14.

SCINTILLE (Sparks)
Music and lyrics by Zucchero, it was written last May at the Umbi Studios and features David Sancious on Hammond organ.

BAILA (sexy thing)
Music and lyrics by Zucchero and Robix, written last March in Sausalito, it is the well-known first single which came out before the album and rocketed to the singles top chart (already got a platinum); it includes a "drum sample" from "Take me to the river".

DINDONDIO
Music by Zucchero and lyrisc by Zucchero and Panella written last April at Roncocesi, it includes a sample from "Oh! Death Where Is thy Sting?"

ROSSA MELA DELLA SERA (Red evening apple)
Here Panella again wrote the lyrics together with Zucchero ; music by Zucchero, this song was born last April in San Francisco and includes a sample from "Choladas" by M.Vivanco.

SHAKE
Music and lyrics by Zucchero, it was written last April in the Napa Valley.

TOBIA
Music by Zucchero and Luisi and lyric by Francesco De Gregori, it was created last April on the Po Delta.

De Gregori was very struck by the story Zucchero told him about his dog Tobia that had just died and that he was very fond of. Here De Gregori has Tobia talking to his master.
