The third album to be released which was made up of material originally intended for the unreleased box set LATHER, initially released in 1979. In contrast to the assortment of material on SLEEP DIRT and STUDIO TAN, this album includes some of Zappa's more ambitious pieces. Recorded live at UCLA's Royce Hall in 1975, with Michael Zearott conducting the orchestra. This all-instrumental set laid the groundwork for later explorations such as LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and THE YELLOW SHARK. Includes "Strictly Genteel," "Bogus Pomp" and "Duke Of Prunes."

The material on this album originally was intended to be part of a four-record set called Läther, prepared for release in 1977. Then Frank Zappa got into a disagreement with his record company, Warner Bros., and Läther was split up into several different releases as part of a contractual agreement. The results were dumped on the market during 1978 and 1979, while Zappa moved on to his own record label. Orchestral Favorites consists of material recorded on September 17 and 18, 1975, with a 37-piece orchestra and includes such familiar Zappa themes as "Duke of Prunes" (from Absolutely Free) and "Strictly Genteel" (from 200 Motels); "Bogus Pomp" also consisted largely of 200 Motels music. The themes are melodic and often majestic, with various startling juxtapositions and changes. This was the first release of Zappa orchestral material since Lumpy Gravy and a precursor of things to come.

Ein phantastischer Trip mit vielen Schattierungen! "Orchestral Favorites" wurde 1975 aufgenommen und enthält in den fünf für Orchester und Rockband arrangierten Stücken u.a. weiterentwickeltes, musikalisches Material früheren Datums. So ist "Duke Of Prunes" von der "Absolutely Free"-LP/CD her bekannt, und in "Strictly Genteel" bzw. "Bogus Pomp" finden sich bekannte Melodien aus dem "200 Motels"-Film. Doch weit fehlt, wer dies für bloße Wiederholung hält, denn was Zappa hieraus gemacht hat, gehört für mich zum schillerndsten, abgedrehtesten und schönsten (jawohl!), was er in den siebzigern überhaupt gemacht hat. Man hat das Gefühl, in einen Dschungel voller Geheimnisse und Gefahren, voller nie gehörter und gesehener Tänze und Visionen einzutauchen, wie keine Drogen ihn jemals hervorrufen könnten. Beim ersten Hören wird man förmlich erschlagen von einer fulminanten Klang- und Bilderflut in verschiedensten, miteinander verwobenen Stilrichtungen, und vielleicht legt man die Platte dann erst einmal beiseite und traut sich nicht mehr dran. "Chaotisch" wird mancher sie finden. Doch nur Mut, bei jedem Hören wächst die Faszination und die über der ganzen Platte liegende, augenzwinkernde Wärme, die vielleicht erst später so richtig herüberkommt, macht die humoristische Dimension zunehmend deutlich. Nichts für Leute, die mit Zappa vornehmlich "Bobby Brown" verbinden, sondern für aufgeschlossene Liebhaber interessanter Klänge!
