Originally released at the end of 1969, this is a collection of archival material from The Mothers of Invention, largely instrumental and featuring a lot of piano work from Ian Underwood. The doo-wopping "WPLJ" leads off a progressive jazz-influenced set including the full studio version of "Little House I Used to Live In" (far longer and more involved than the overture version on FILLMORE EAST); and "Holiday in Berlin, Full-Blown". Jimmy Carl Black, Roy Estrada, Sugar Cane Harris and Don Preston are among the supporting cast.

From the Label

Burnt Weeny Sandwich is another high-quality entry in Zappa's 1969-70 period of largely instrumental works. Like Weasels Ripped My Flesh, which immediately followed it, Burnt Weeny Sandwich was compiled from studio and concert recordings of the original Mothers of Invention lineup. A bit more on the heavy guitar-rock side than the jazzy Hot Rats, and less avant-garde than portions of Weasels, Burnt Weeny Sandwich also features stately classical passages and extended solo excursions from Ian Underwood, Don Preston, and Sugarcane Harris, as well as two doo wop covers bookending the record: the Four Deuces' "WPLJ" and Jackie and the Starlites' "Valarie." The other tracks are mostly seguéd together, and flow into one another quite well.

WPLJ

I say WPLJ, it really tastes good to me
WPLJ won't you take a drink with me
Well, it's a good good wine
It really makes me feel so fine, so fine, so fine, so fine

I went to the store when they open up the door
I said: "Please please please gimme some more"
White port & lemon juice, white port & lemon juice,
White port & lemon juice, ooh what a good to you!

You take the bottle, you take the can, shake it up fine
You get a good good wine.
White port & lemon juice, white port & lemon juice,
White port & lemon juice, ooh what a good to you!

The W is the white, the P is the port
The L is the lemon, the J is the juice
White port & lemon juice, white port & lemon juice,
White port & lemon juice, ooh what a good to you!

Well I feel so good, I feel so fine
I got plenty of lovin', I got plenty of wine
White port & lemon juice, white port & lemon juice,
I said white port & lemon juice, ooh what a good to you!

LITTLE HOUSE I USED TO LIVE IN

Thank you, good night...

Thank you

If you, if you sit down and be quiet, we'll make an attempt to, ah, perform Brown Shoes Don't Make It.

(Back on your seats, come on, we'll help you back to your seats, come on...)

(Oh! Go away! Take that uniform off man! Or I'll take your uniform before it's too late man!)

Everybody in this room is wearing a uniform and don't kid yourself!

(............man!)

You'll hurt your throat, stop it!

VALARIE

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la

Although you don't want me no more
Oh, but it's alright, alright with me
'Cause you know, you're gonna want me some day
Yes, you will want me, and I'll run away

Oh Valarie, (Valarie),
Valarie, (Valarie),
Valarie
Don't you want me, don't you need me

Valarie,
Valarie,
Valarie,
Valarie

Although you don't want me no more
Oh, but it's alright, it's alright with me
'Cause you know, you're gonna want me some day
Oh you will want me, and I'll run away

Oh Valarie, (Valarie),
Valarie, (Valarie),
Valarie,
Valarie
