The most complete retrospective of Yanni's work since 1997's Devotion: The Best of Yanni and 2000's The Very Best of Yanni, Ultimate Yanni comes close to living up to its title. The double-disc, 24-track set features digitally remastered versions of definitive songs like "Marching Season," "To the One Who Knows," "Reflections of Passion," "Aria," "Santorini," and "Flight of Fantasy," and also includes tracks from his earliest albums as well as his compositions for the Olympics, the Tour de France, and Wide World of Sports. "Keys to Imagination," "Chasing Shadows," "In the Mirror," and "The Rain Must Fall" are some of the album's other highlights. While Devotion and The Very Best of Yanni are still worthy collections of Yanni's album material, Ultimate Yanni paints a more comprehensive portrait of how widespread and popular his work truly is. While most Yanni fans should already own the majority of these tracks, this album is still worthwhile for them as well as newcomers and casual listeners.

Fact: Yanni released just eight original recordings while under contract to record conglomerate BMG between 1986 and 1994. Ultimate Yanni is, incredibly, the 12th compilation/best-of project BMG has issued since Yanni switched to another label. Yet Ultimate Yanni manages to elevate itself as one of the best of the bunch: a value-priced two-CD package of pre-Tribute material (126 minutes' worth) that, remarkably, includes eight tracks (out of 24) that appear on no previous sampler. Most selections (compiled by radio host and Amazon.com contributor John Diliberto) emphasize Yanni's bolder colors and more muscular instincts, a reminder of his early-career talent for blending progressive-rock drama with a Renaissance man's romantic flair. Three tracks ("Santorini," "Nostalgia" and "The Rain Must Fall") are lifted from Live at the Acropolis and only the latter bogs down under the weight of excessive soloing. "Marching Season" is presented as a piano solo, taken from a long-extinct Private Music sampler. Combine this with Reflections of Passion, his first best-of release (only three tracks overlap), and newcomers to Yanni essentially have his early years covered.

Ultimate Yanni is the fourteenth compilation album by Keyboardist Yanni, released on the BMG Heritage label in 2003 (see 2003 in music). The album peaked at #1 on Billboard's "Top New Age Albums" chart in 2004 and at #74 on the "Billboard 200" in 2003.[1] This album is the remastered recordings.
