For those of you who thought synthesist extraordinaire Yanni could compose only for the soft spoken WAVE format, you might want to think again. Yanni thanks John Tesh in the liner notes, and much of this solid work is reminiscent of Tesh's Garden City - that is, lots of sweet, upbeat synth textures perfect for an oceanfront drive, such as the brassy "Running Time" and the upbeat "Human Condition." There are a few mellow, pretty tunes like "Quiet Man," but then there is the exciting hornwork of Nolan Smith Jr. on "Dance with a Stranger," and the intriguing soundscape textures on "Nightbird." The best track is the Brazilian flavored title cut, which features a strong bass groove, percussion, and vocals reminiscent of those on Sergio Mendes' best work. Though Yanni has forever been bound to the new age format despite his amazing success, the best cuts on this album put him smack dab in the middle of the smooth jazz realm. Take the Yanni challenge with this one. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Jonathan Widran - All Music Guide

Unlike anything else in his discography, Niki Nana could be fairly described as Yanni's idea of a party album. Buoyant, tropical, and well-intentioned, Yanni apparently yearns for this music to inspire humankind to latch on to its hips and form an intercontinental conga line that snakes its way around the globe. "Niki Nana," the liner notes inform us, means "We're one," and who could fault such a notion or question Yanni's sincerity? It's just that the music is so... different. Not necessarily bad, but certainly different. Bright, bouncy, and liberally adorned with horn and vocal accents, each piece except "First Touch" and "Quiet Man" is a clear departure from the regal romanticism customarily associated with the keyboardist.

Niki Nana is the fifth studio album by Keyboardist Yanni, released on the Private Music label in 1989, (see 1989 in music). It peaked at #2 on Billboard's "Top New Age Albums" chart in the same year. The liner notes dedicate the album to his father and mother respectively: "Dedicated to Sotiri and Felitsa Hrisomallis". In 1992, lyrics in Greek were written for the track "Nightbird" by Greek lyricist Tasoula Thomaïdou. The song was called "Mia Ellada Fos" (A whole Greece of Light) and was performed by the Greek-Cypriot singer Konstantina in her personal album of the same name in 1992.
