This is the Rolling Stones guitarist's first album for German label SPV. It features guest appearances by his son Jesseand daughter Leah, alongside Bob Dylan and Kelly Jones. 'Not For Beginners' is a raw album full of blues and soul.



On his first solo album in nearly a decade, Ron Wood recruits some of his friends, acquaintances, and former co-workers for a throwaway disc of studio rave-ups and questionably chosen covers. Ian McLagan, Andy Newmark, Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, and most notably, Bob Dylan lend rhythm, voices, and more to Wood's own instrumental leads and scratchy vocals. Unfortunately, the lineup is just about the only thing that's surprising or even good about the album. Whether stumbling through the Byrds' "Rock n' Roll Star" or tripping over Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Leaving Here," Wood is an awkward frontman and bandleader. Only when his guitar does the talking for him - like on "Wayside" or Dylan's "King of Kings" - does Not for Beginners actually sound like a record made by a guy who makes tons of money playing in one of the world's most legendary bands.

Wie Mick Jagger macht auch Ronnie Wood mal wieder sein eigenes Ding. Für sein neues Soloalbum Not For Beginners hat der Rolling-Stones-Gitarrist ebenfalls eine Handvoll Kollegen ins Studio geholt, um eine entspannte Runde Songs einzuspielen - die Ex-Kollegen Ian MacLagan, Keyboards, und Andy Newmark, Schlagzeug, von den Faces, aus der Elvis-Presley-Band Gitarrist Scotty Moore und Schlagzeuger DJ Fontana für das ruhige Instrumental "Interfere", die Stimme von Kelly Jones (Stereophonics), Sohn Jesse, Gitarre und Tochter Leah Wood, Gesang, sowie Bob Dylan himself. Die beiden zupfen sich auf "King Of Kings" gegenseitig etwas vor, unspektakulär und wortlos, aber fein zum Dösen. Mundfaul wie Raubeinstimme Ronnie nun einmal ist, hat er etliche bluesige Instrumentals wie "Hypershine" eingestreut, ansonsten ist ebenfalls Laidback zwischen Rhythm'n'Blues und Louisiana angesagt. "Be Beautiful", ein Weltschmerz-Blues, ist zum Weinen schön, und Ronnie klingt wie Dr. John und der halbe Bayou. Bei der Byrds-Adaption "Rock'n'Roll Star" wird kräftig losgerockt, und die Mundharmonika klingt gut auf "Heart, Soul & Body", das gut als Motto für diese LP taugt.
