This live recording provides proof of what can happen when musicians that have never played together before join forces in unusual situations! Rantala, Wollny and Mo zd zer succeed in creating a defining moment in music, in which jazz and classical meet as equals little wonder really, with all three of them being such crossover fans. In 1944, the notorious American jazz impresario Norman Grantz (1918 2001) had a vision: he wanted to anchor the uniqueness and virtuosity of improvised music deep in society, enable the musicians to garner the rank and recognition they deserved, and create something entirely new by spontaneously combining different styles and approaches in unexpected ensembles. There could only be one place to make this plan a reality: a classical concert hall. Thus, Jazz at the Philharmonic was born! New concert series Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic picks up on Grantz s groundbreaking idea. The Berlin Philharmonic Foundation was of the opinion that jazz deserved more attention, and when ACT owner Siggi Loch remembered the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series, he proposed such a concept for Berlin.

Die umjubelte Premiere von „Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic“ mit Iiro Rantala, Leszek Mozdzer und Michael Wollny als Live-Mitschnitt jetzt auf CD: Es war ein „fulminanter Start“ mit „Seltenheitswert für Berlin“, bei dem sich „Jazz und Klassik auf Augenhöhe begegnen“ schrieb der Tagesspiegel über die Premiere der neuen Konzertreihe „Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic“ am 11. Dezember 2012. Der Kammermusiksaal der Philharmonie war erstmals in seiner 25 jährigen Geschichte bei einem Jazz Konzert bereits zwei Wochen vorher komplett ausverkauft: Leszek Mozdzer, Iiro Rantala und Michael Wollny bildeten ein ungewöhnliches Jazz-Trio, das solo, im Duo oder als Trio an Konterflügeln und Fender Rhodes Platz nahm, um die hohe Kunst der Jazzimprovisation zu demonstrieren. „Von Bach bis Corea, von Mozdzer über Wollny bis Rantala. Das war großartig, um nicht zu sagen: Weltklasse“ resümierte das ZDF. Mozdzers klassische Bildung, die an Chopin gemahnt, leuchtete in seinem Spiel immer wieder auf, Iiro Rantala schaffte einen mühelosen Spagat von Bachs Goldbergvariationen bis hin zu Esbjörn Svensson, dem er gemeinsam mit Michael Wollny im Duett, eine herzergreifende Ballade widmete. Michel Wollny, beeindruckte seinerseits durch sein konventionsloses Spiel, dass düsterromantische Züge mit der Klangwelt der englischen Popband Pulp und freien Improvisationsexkursen vereint.
