Academy-Award winning composer Vangelis performed his epochal composition "Mythodea" at the Temple of Zeus in Athens, Greece, on June 28th to an audience of thousands at the site and an additional audience in the tens of thousands who watched it on a giant video screen in the Marble Stadium built for the revival of the Olympics in 1896. The concert, which was under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and presented by the Hellenic Cultural Heritage Society, the entity responsible for the organization of the Cultural Olympiad, was the first major concert to be performed at the temple, which dates back to the 6th century BC. "It is a very important setting," Vangelis remarked, "with very significant energy". Featuring sopranos Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, the concert also included the London Metropolitan Orchestra, the 120-member chorus of the National Opera of Greece and twenty eight percussionists. The event was filmed for television and will be broadcast worldwide in the fall, 2001.

Merging his love of music, space and mythology, Mythodea was inspired by Vangelis' long time fascination with NASA's space program. And the music celebrates the NASA 2001 Mars Odyssey Mission, scheduled to arrive at the red planet in October. The concert event featured projected images of Mars from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and icons from Greek Mythology. "The saga of Martian exploration continues, now enhanced vividly by the music of Vangelis," Jim Garvin, NASA's chief scientist for the Mars Exploration Program, said in a statement included in the concert program.

Mythodea - Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey will be released on CD by Sony Classical in the fall accompanied by a DVD and VHS of the Athens concert.

Schneller, höher, lauter

Als der gebürtige Grieche Vangelis Papathanassiou eine Karriere in der Musikbranche anstrebte, streifte er aus schwer nachvollziehbaren Gründen seinen Nachnamen ab. Vangelis spielte zunächst in der Gruppe "Aphrodite´s Childs" und nahm danach einige Soloalben mit elektronischer Musik auf. Ebenfalls sehr erfolgreich waren die drei Platten, die er gemeinsam mit dem "Yes"-Sänger Jon Anderson einspielte.

Ein weiteres Tätigkeitsfeld von Vangelis ist der Soundtrack. Nachdem er zunächst die Musik für TV-Tierfilmserien schuf, wurde seine erste Arbeit für einen Kinofilm gleich ein gewaltiger Triumph. 1981 erhielt er den Oscar für seinen Soundtrack zu "Chariots of Fire". Dies qualifizierte ihn zu seiner möglicherweise besten Arbeit: Der Musik zum Kultfilm "Blade Runner" (1982), die seltsamerweise zunächst nur als "Orchesteradaption" ohne Beteiligung von Vangelis auf Platte gepresst wurde und erst 1994 als Originalsoundtrack erschien.

Eine weitere Filmmusik wurde durch Zweckentfremdung (zumindest hierzulande) zu einem gewaltigen Erfolg. Die Titelmelodie aus dem Film "1492" wurde vom Boxer Henry Maske als Hymne zur Untermalung seiner Aufmärsche eingesetzt. In die selbe Kerbe haut jetzt die neuste Arbeit von Vangelis. Für ein Konzert zur Marsmission der NASA hat er ein (eher bombastisches als wirklich beeindruckendes) musikalisches Epos namens "Mythodea" komponiert. Hierfür werden neben einem Symphonieorchester, noch ein 120-köpfiger Chor sowie die Opernsängerinnen Kathlen Battle und Jessye Norman benötigt. Die Veranstaltung wird im Zeus-Tempel in Athen abgehalten, was recht praktisch ist, weil Vangelis auch gleichzeitig offizieller Hofkomponist der Olympischen Spiele ist, die 2004 ebenfalls in Athen stattfinden.

Vangelis widmet seine Choral-Symphonie Mythodea -- entstanden aus "Mythos" und "Ode" -- dem NASA-Marsprojekt "Odyssey 2001". Vangelis Beziehung zum Weltall besteht schon lange und seine Musik wurde nicht umsonst für die TV-Reihe Cosmos eingesetzt: Seine Kompositionen atmen Weite, Unendlichkeit und Kraft.

Mythodea bildet hier keine Ausnahme. Die elektronischen Klänge, vereint mit großem Chor und Orchester, spiegeln das Abenteuer Marsexpedition wider, die ungeheuren Ausmaße des Roten Planeten und die ewige Einsamkeit im All. Gewaltige Klänge und pathetische Rhythmen zeichnen den schon fast religiös anmutenden Mythos des Mars nach.
