Recorded at Kuff Studios, Jamaica; Dep International Studios, Birmingham, England.

Recording primarily at Jamaica's Kuff Studios, UB40 used the surrounding island as a muse in lending their friendly pop/reggae sound a grittier edge. A heavy dub vibe permeates "Always There" while "Hurry Come Up" uses a rapid, lo-fi rhythm track to lend a dance-hall flavour. A small Jamaican town that's remained unchanged for 200 years inspired "OracabessaMoonshine" while the title track came about after listeningto the anti-gun campaign of an Ochos Rios radio station. Although UB40 strays into more eclectic territory this time around, GUNS IN THE GHETTO also reflects the band's crossover sensibilities. This comes across particularly on the lush ragga-ballad "Lisa" and the retro, Lisa Stansfield-sounding "IReally Can't Say".

Guns in the Ghetto finds UB40 moving even further into adult contemporary territory than they did on Promises and Lies. There's only the occasional hint of the politically charged, vibrant reggae that earned the band a dedicated following in the '80s. In its place is pleasant, completely inoffensive pop that occasionally has a skanking backbeat. Since the band is no longer capable of writing catchy melodies, the music comes across as aural wallpaper, and while that can make for pleasant listening, it makes Guns in the Ghetto a disappointment for most long-term fans.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine - All Music Guide

Allerdings schunkelt es hier derart gemächlich und unspektakulär, daß außer "Tell Me Is It True" und "I Really Cant't Say" kein Song bleibende Eindrücke hinterläßt. ** M: 3-6
