The Passengers is a collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno, so it should come as no surprise that the music on Original Soundtracks I is an extension of U2's last album, Zooropa. Under Eno's influence, the group incorporates more ambient electronic soundscapes, which unravel over the course of the album. In fact, Original Soundtracks I sounds more like a Brian Eno album than a U2 release, except when the band's knack for anthemic pop songwriting shines through every once and awhile. The most affecting example of this is "Miss Sarajevo," a slowly pulsating and melancholy collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti, who makes the middle eight soar. Equally impressive is the sweeping "Your Blue Room," which stands as one of U2's finest ballads. Nevertheless, the heart of the album is in its instrumentals, where the band - particularly The Edge and Eno -         manages to keep the constantly shifting sonic colors and textures involving and intriguing.

United Colours

Instrumental

Slug

Don't want to lose my shirt
Don't want to dig the dirt
Don't want you to get hurt
Can't help that I'm a flirt

Don't want to take your drugs
Don't want to be a slug
Don't want to over dress
Don't want to make a mess
Don't want you to confess
Not under duress

Don't want to be untrue
I want to be with you
Don't want to lose my nerve
Don't want to crawl the curb
Don't want to make you swerve
Don't want what I deserve
Don't want to change the frame
Don't want to be a pain
Don't want to stay the same

Your Blue Room

It's time to go again to your blue room
Got some questions to ask of you in your blue room
The air is clean - your skin is clear
I've had enough of hangin' 'round here
It's a different kind of conversation
In your blue room

[1st high voice:
Saw me coming
In outside
Saw me coming
Somewhere I can hide]

And time is a string of pearls (YOUR BLUE ROOM)
[whisper: 'aw sing it']
See the future just hanging there (YOUR BLUE ROOM)
A new frame - a new perspective
Looking down on my objectives
Your instructions - whatever the directions
Your blue room

[2nd high voice:
Saw me coming
East by the moon
Saw me coming
Can you feel]

That's why one day I'll be back (YOUR BLUE ROOM)
Yeah, I hope I remember where it's at (YOUR BLUE ROOM)

[3rd high voice:
We see me slide
Won't you give me a home
So much for change]

[Adam:]
Zooming in,
Zooming out,
Nothing I can do without,
A lens to see it all up close,
Magnifying what everyone knows,
Never in company,
Never alone,
No car alarm, no cellular phone

Always Forever Now

Instrumental

A Different Kind of Blue

[Brian Eno:]

Those cars all new so small down there
From here so high we drift we fly
With twilight breaking through
A different kind of blue
More lights blue signs all gold all new
So small so high down there tonight
With twilight breaking through
It's a different kind of blue

Beach Sequence

Instrumental

Miss Sarajevo

[Bono:]

Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with the day
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
A time for cutting hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear

Here she comes, heads turn around
Here she comes, to take her crown

Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colors
Different names you find it hard to spell
Is there a time for first communion
A time for East 17
Is there a time to turn to Mecca
Is there a time to be a beauty queen

Here she comes, beauty plays the clown
Here she comes, surreal in her crown

[Pavarotti:]                        [Translation:]

Dici che il fiume                   You say that the river
Trova la via al mare                Finds the way to the sea
E come il fiume                        And as the river
Giungerai a me                        You'll come to me
Oltre i confini                        Beyond the borders
E le terre assetate                 And the thirsty lands
Dici che come fiume                    You say that as the river
Come fiume                            As the river
L'amore giungera                    Love will come
L'amore                                Love
E non so piu pregare                And I cannot pray anymore
E nell'amore non so piu sperare        And I cannot hope for love anymore
E quell'amore non so piu aspettare    And I cannot wait for that love anymore

[Bono:]

Is there a time for tying ribbons
A time for Christmas trees
Is there a time for laying tables
And the night is set to freeze.

One Minute Warning

[chanting at the end - probable lyrics]

A lonesome soul
In an old black boat
A lonesome frown
What a way to go
Chains they go to
The strings to hold
In in an old black coat
A lonesome soul
A lonesome soul
A lonesome soul

Corpse (These Chains are Way Too Long)

[edge: probable lyrics]

Hang - see you soon
Sad through your room
I'm reachin' out
Hang - be my friend
Stay 'til the end
Don't look away
Hang - Hang - Hang - Hang

Hang - take your rope
Don't choke that way
Don't feel your every step
Hang - Hang

Chains move that thing
Chains we can see
Chains way too long
Chains (in this)
Chains way back there
Chains we could see
Chains are way too long
And I feel my song
Feel my song

Elvis Ate America

[howie b:]

elvis [ad infinitum]

[bono:]

white trash, the memphis flash, didn't smoke hash
and woulda been a sissy without johnny cash
didn't dodge the draft
had his own aircraft
having a laugh on the lisa marie in a colour photograph
under the hood, cadillac blood, darling bud
flowered and returned to the mississippi mud
ain't gonna rot in a memphis plot
didn't hear the shot
but Dr. King died just across the lot (from)
vanilla ice cream, girls of 14, memphis spleen shooting tvs
reading corinthians 13 with god on his knees on three tvs
here come the killer bees
head full o' honey
(potato chips and cheese)
the bumper stickers
the white knickers
the white nigger
ate at the burger (king) and just kept getting bigger
sang to win the battle hymm
the battle to be slim
elvis ate america before america ate him
stamps, necromance, fans, psychophants
the public enemy - don't mean shit to chuck d
changed the centre of gravity, made it slippy
hitler nixon christ mishima marcus jackson
the pelvis the psalmist the genius the generous
forgive us pray for us
