U2 sounded so confident and assured on their debut that perhaps it was inevitable they would stumble slightly on its follow-up, October. The record isn't weaker than its predecessor because it repeats the formula of Boy, it's because the band tries too hard to move forward. Bono, in particular, tries too hard to make big political, emotional, and religious statements, but the remainder of the band isn't innocent. In general, the music is too pompous, with the sound overwhelming the actual songs. But when U2 do marry the message, melody and sound together, as on "Gloria," "I Threw a Brick Through a Window" and "I Fall Down," the results are thoroughly impressive.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

Ein Beweis wäre der Titel "With a shout".

Long a favorite of U2's original core following, October not only avoids the sophomore slump, but adds an edgy, emotional resonance to the buoyant self-confidence they showed on their debut, Boy. Though producer Steve Lillywhite deserves mention for helping effectively frame the material with production that manages to be both stark and atmospherically murky, this is the music where Bono, Edge, and company first show the potential that would make them superstars. Lacking the sometimes ham-fisted polemics that would mar War, The Joshua Tree, and later works, October has an oft-tortured sense of emotional and philosophical ambivalence that only underscores concerns that range from the crypto-spiritualist yearnings of "Gloria" and "Rejoice" to more anxious moments like "I Fall Down," "I Threw a Brick Through a Window," and "Fire." In retrospect, they may have peaked early.

Most people when they think of U2 usually don't think of spirituality, but if you've read any of their biographies or really paid attention to their lyrics then you would know different. Anyway, I've followed U2 since their beginning in 1979, and I must say that I believe in my opinion that this is their best album. For the emotion, because Bono's mother had passed away before its release and for its spirituality because I believe Bono's "walk" was stronger then than it is now, but that is another discussion. However, October opens with "Gloria" giving thanks to God in latin during its chorus which so many people get confused thinking that Bono is talking to a girl but he's not. "I Threw a Brick Through a Window" is amazing. Bono is talking about being trapped in sin but being able to find forgiveness through his "brother" and through Christ. "Rejoice" is so obvious. "Tomorrow" is probably my favorite in that Bono is crying out to two people: his mother and to Jesus. The rest of the album deals with him dealing with his emotions of his mom passing and incorporating it with the love of his faith. And the music as always is amazing. What else could you expect from U2! (Other albums by U2 that are similar to October in lyrical content would be Unforgettable Fire, War, and The Joshua Tree.)

It has been said that U2 reinvents themselves with each album. This is, in fact, not entirely accurate. Why? October and its predecessor, Boy, are splendid compliments to each other, simply put. October rejuvenates Boy's teenage bewilderment and bolsters the fresh sound of early U2. There is a difference between the two albums though. Those both familiar with Boy and not will find an even more refined, raw sincerity within U2's music, in Bono's spoken word as well as by instrument. With soaring emotional content, one-could-only-hope yearning and sparkling clarity, songs like "Stranger In A Strange Land", "Tomorrow", "Rejoice" and the title track, the core of this album tugs at the heart in ways nearly unimaginable. Anyone serious about U2 counts October as one of their favorites, and not just for the nostalgia either. It's just purity at its best. But don't take my word for it - explore the depths of October on your own.

I feel that this album is the by far the best older U2 record, between "Boy", "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire". Mainly because of the diversity of songs, some fast, some slow, some loud and some soft. It is beautiful how they use the piano and how Bono's voice melts in with the music. Now I love the new stuff and have been a U2 fan for 10 years, but when critics and fans say they miss the older stuff this is the record they are talking about. A must have.

Gloria

I try to sing this song.
I try to stand up.
But I can't find my feet.
I try, I try to speak up.
But only in you I'm complete.

Gloria, in Te Domine
Gloria, exultate

Oh lord, loosen my lips?
I try to sing this song.
I try to get in,
But I can't find the door.
The door is open.
You're standing there,
Let me in.

Gloria, Gloria

Oh Lord, if I have anything, anything at all,
I'll give it to you.

Gloria, Gloria

I fall Down

You know he says I'm getting nowhere.
I wrote this letter hoping to get someplace soon.
I want to get up when I wake up.
When I get up,
I fall down

You let him wake up.
You let him tell the story.
You wrote the letter,
Said you were gonna get there someday.
Gonna walk in the sun, and the wind, and the rain.
Never walk back again.
Now you fall down.
You fall down.

You let him say something.
You let him say I'm sorry.
You're gonna get better.
You better not leave me here anyway.
I want to get up when you wake up.
When I get up,
I fall down.
I'm falling down.

I've run myself.
I fall down when you fall down.

I Threw a Brick Through a Window

I was talking, I was talking to myself, somebody else.
Talk, talk, talking.
I couldn't hear a word,
A word you said.
He was my brother.
I said there was no other,
Way out of here.
Be my brother.
I got to get out.

I was walking, I was walking into walls.
I'm back again, just keep walking.
I walk into a window to see myself, and my reflection.
When I thought about it,
My direction,
Going nowhere, going nowhere.

No one, no one is blinder.
Who will, who will not see?
No one, no one is blinder than me.

I was talking, I was talking in my sleep.
I can stop talking.
I'm talking to you.
It's up to you.
Be my brother.
There is another way out of here,
In my brother.
Gonna get out, gonna get out of here.

Rejoice

He's falling, he's falling,
And outside the buildings are tumbling down,
And inside all over the ground.
Do it again.
But what am I to do?
What in the world am I to say?
There's nothing for us to do.
He says you'll change the world someday.
I rejoice.

He's building, I'll follow.
Bear with him.
I'm listing to what he's saying.
Everyone's crazy, but I'm too lazy.
Why? what must I do?

What am I supposed to say?
I'll never change the world.
But I can change the world in you.

Rejoice, rejoice.

What am I to do?
Tell me what I am supposed to say.
I can't change the world.
But I can change the world in me.
Rejoice

I don't know
I don't know what to change.
Rejoice
Rejoice

Fire

Falling, falling
The sun is burning black.
Falling, falling
It's beating on my back,
With the fire.
Falling, falling
And the moon is running red.
It's pulling me instead, with the fire.
Fire.

but there's a fire inside.
I'm falling over.
There's a fire in me.
And I call out.
And I feel some fire.
I'm calling out.
The stars are falling down.
They knock me to the ground.
With the fire, fire.

And there's a fire inside.
When I'm falling over,
There's a fire in me.
When I call out,
There's a fire inside.
When I'm falling over,
I feel the fire.
I'm burning fire, falling.

Tomorrow

Won't you come back tomorrow?
Won't you come back tomorrow?

Won't you come back tomorrow?
Can I sleep tonight?
Outside, somebody's outside.
Somebody's lookin at the door.
There's a black car parked at the side of the road.
So go to the door.
Let him out.
Go in outside, mother.
Go in outside.

Won't you come back tomorrow?
Won't you come back tomorrow?
Won't you come back tomorrow?

Who broke the window?
Who broke down the door?
Who told the cutter?
And who was he for?
Who heals the bounds?
Who heals the stars?
Open the door.

Won't be back tomorrow?
Won't be back tomorrow?
Won't you come back tomorrow?
Can I sleep tonight?

Cause I want you, I want you.
I really want you.

I want you to be back tomorrow.
I want you to be back tomorrow.
Will you be back tomorrow?

Open up the way to love, oh God.
Come back, heal me.
Jesus, come back.
I'm gonna be there tomorrow.

October

October.
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear.
What do I care?
October.
And Kingdoms rise,
And Kingdoms fall,
But you go on, and on.

With a shout

Where do we go?
Where do we go from here?
Where to go?
To the side of a hill.
Blood was spilt, we were still.
And staring at each other.
We were doing nothing.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem.
Shout, Shout.
With a shout, shout it out.

I want to go
To the side,
To the one who made me sing,
To the side of the hill.
We were still, we were filled,
With a love.
We want to be loved.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem.
Shout, shout.
With a shout.

Stranger in a Strange Land

Stranger, stranger in a stange land.
He looked at me as one who should run.
We asked him to smile for a photograph.
Waited a while to see if we could make him laugh.

So did I seek for a cigarette.
His smiling face I can't forget.
It looked like it crossed the street.
He said, I'll wait here.
I wish you were here.
I wish you were here.

Stranger, stranger in a strange land.
He look at me like I was the one who should run.
I watched as he watched us get back on the bus.
I watched there it was.
The way it was there.
He was with us.
And I really don't mind sleeping on the floor.
I can't sleep after what I saw.
I wrote this letter to tell you,
The way I feel.
I wish you were here.
To see what I could see, and hear.
I wish you were here.

Scarlet

Rejoice, rejoice.
Rejoice, rejoice.

Is That All?

Singing this song makes me angry.
I'm not angry with you.
Is that all?
Is that all?

Sing me a song that makes me happy.
I'm happy with you.
Singing this song makes me pale.
Is that all?
Is that all?
