The album is actually credited to just Tina, and no one has earned the right to a single moniker more than the former Mrs. Turner. Now over 60, Tina has picked a suite of songs about survival, a topic she knows well, and imbued them with as much soul as she can muster. Tina still puts Mariah Carey and Celine Dion to shame. But unfortunately, on Twenty Four Seven, the famous Turner passion is often submerged in glossy production that virtually defines "adult contemporary." In some transcendent moments, Tina reminds us of the woman who sang "River Deep, Mountain High" — like when she spits out "I've never been a winner but I still play the game" in "All the Woman," or during the powerful coda to "I Will Be There." As Tina sings in "Absolutely Nothing's Changed," she's lived to fight another day, and that's proof she ain't been broken.

No doubt emboldened by the unlikely late-career success of sister chanteuse/force-of-nature Cher, R&B legend Turner signed on with producers Brian Rawling and Mark Taylor (the team behind the former's worldwide smash "Believe"). Their contemporary production-touches seldom get in the way of Turner's soulful smolder and burn, especially on tracks like the gospel-steeped opener, "Whatever You Need," which stakes the team's intentions to bring the singer into the 21st century with her dignity intact. Wed to a strong melodic pop sensibility ("Absolutely Nothing's Changed," "Talk to My Heart," the smooth Philly soul of "Don't Leave Me This Way"), Turner's dramatic readings are often irresistible. Even on more commercial and dance-oriented tracks (the single "When the Heartache Is Over"; the Bryan Adams duet "Without You"), it's Turner who triumphs. But then, this is a woman who could breath sexual fire into a toothpaste jingle.

Aged 61 when this album was released, Twenty Four Seven manages to ooze with both youth and class. Influenced by contemporary club culture, the songs range from the "Believe" sound-alike track "When The Heartache Is Over" (which incidentally was produced by Brian Rawlings, the man behind the Cher hit) to the Shania Twain country-pop style title track "Twenty Four Seven". Although there are a couple of ballads ("Talk To My Heart" and "Falling"), Turner seems to have left the diva crooning for the likes of Celine Dion. Tracks such as the opener "Whatever You Need" prove that she still has more than enough energy: she's not a frazzled old disco grandma.

John Galilee, Amazon.co.uk

Watching Tina Turner move further into heavily-produced adult contemporary territory will probably disappoint faithful fans who buy her albums in the fond hope that she may someday find her way back to the raw, urgent soul she was turning out with former husband Ike. At 60, however, Turner has resolutely settled into what has become a lite-rock franchise. Twenty Four Seven's biggest gamble is bringing in the producers of Cher's unlikely dance hit "Believe" for the first single, "When the Heartache Is Over." Turner essays the song with great flair, but whether it truly highlights the brassy singer's best assets is another matter. Electronic touches surface frequently, especially on oddly likable tracks like "Absolutely Nothing's Changed" and "Go Ahead," but Turner ultimately opts out of the full Ray of Light makeover. Instead, she delivers a fresh set of hotel lobby standards with such songs as "Whatever You Need" and the mildly funky "Falling." Old friend Bryan Adams jumps up just to get beat down on the unconvincingly rocky "Without You." But Turner fares best on the final, title track, a retro-ish romp complete with vintage rock-and-roll guitars, bluesy harmonicas, and a stomping go-go beat. It's a quick look back that makes everything that comes before it sound hopelessly lightweight.

With her singular voice, celebrated story and worshipped legs, Tina Turner is no less than an American icon. Her personal struggles and triumphs have inspired millions of women, coming to symbolize female strength and independence. Her music and voice remain an inextricable part of American musical history. This latest record, however, contains few surprises. As usual, heavily-produced soul and pop tunes are buoyed by her powerful vocals and tales of liberation. From ballads like "All the Woman," with slow, sexy hip-hop beats, to rousing dance choruses on "Whatever You Need," Tina's six-decade old voice remains both intense and soulful. "When the heartache is over I know I won't be missing you/won't look over my shoulder cause I know I can live without you," she sings on the album's first single. The emotional impact is deep enough to make you want to trade in your spouse for a dependence-free solo career. The record contains bonus attractions as well: A Bryan Adams cameo on the uptempo "Without You," a never-before-heard Bee Gees song, and the sure-fire production team of Brian Rawling and Mark Taylor (who did Cher's "Believe"). We look up to Tina, we feel for Tina, and we root for Tina. Though Twenty Four Seven lacks the musical relevance of Turner's classic Private Dancer, Tina can still wail.

24 Hours, 7 Listens

That's how long it took for this reviewer to get a good feel of Tina Turner's new release Twenty-Four Seven. This is not because it is a terrible album, because actually it is quite good. It is just such a unique sounding package, one that Tina manages to fit her like a glove. But what else can you expect from such an enduring legend?

Part of the reason that this album is so different from anything Tina, or anyone else, has done before is due to the sleek production of Absolute and Waxworx. Deeply atmospheric and melodic, sometimes dark and heavy-hitting, Tina's new musical path takes its truest form in the second half. From the best cuts, "Go Ahead" and "Without You" right down to the uplifting title track, Tina has hit yet another stride in her long (and leggy) career.

Should you be afraid that Tina is playing it safe and jumping on the Madonna and Cher electronica bandwagon is to totally miss the point here. Yes, there are laser sounds on "Talk to My Heart" and "I Will Be There", but there are also orchestra accompaniment on a few tracks and even a slinky jazz number to keep those romance candles burning.

As for the first half, Tina stays true to her loyal fan base with her usual sounding fare. Even the highly touted dance singles "When the Heartache is Over" and the curiously-titled "Absolutely Nothing's Changed" sound like all-too-familiar territory for Tina stylistically. But like her hairstyle, Tina Turner's music is her own trademark. There certainly hasn't been an outcry for her to do anything differently. If anything, most people want to see her keep right on going into her 60's and beyond. And just as we thought we have come to the point where we know what to expect from her, she does a surprising about-face and decides that her upcoming world tour will be her last. That bandwagon, of course, is being driven by another Diva, Miss Streisand. Or should we refer to her as Mrs. Brolin now?

The one way that Tina has distanced herself from her female counterparts is her devotion to her Buddhist religion that has given herself a strong sense of inner peace, as well as an unselfish attitude toward her fellow man. Love has become even more important than her career, and she has recently snagged herself a boyfriend 16 years her junior. Her new credo should be "What's Age Got to Do With It"! Regardless of whatever decisions Tina makes in her career or her life, Tina has carved out her own niche as one of the very few inspirational artists. I think it is fairly safe to say that she has paid her dues and then some. She can and will do whatever she wants, and as the song goes "Whatever You Need".

Tina Turner's first album of the 21st century continues in the vein of the sophisticated-sounding, adult-contemporary pop that she's been churning out since her fabled comeback from obscurity. Much like her last album, WILDEST DREAMS, Turner borrows nuances from Bristol natives and trip-hop specialists Massive Attack. Unlike DREAMS, Turner's choice of material here successfully leans toward the more obscure side. Helping her achieve this more contemporary approach is Spice Girls collaborator Absolute, whose production contributions include the infectiously airy "All the Woman" and the polite funkiness of "Without You," featuring a cameo by Bryan Adams. Elsewhere, Metro (the London team behind Cher's BELIEVE) inject a chiming guitar, squeaky-clean loops, and an ethereal sound to the female empowerment single "When the Heartache Is Over." Still a force to reckon with at the brink of 60, the former Anna Mae Bullock range hasn't faltered at all. Turner goes from transforming a previously unreleased Brothers Gibb number into a slow jam Mary J. Blige would kill for ("I Will Be There") to wrapping her voice around a lushly orchestrated number that sounds like the lovechild of Nellee Hooper and John Barry ("Go Ahead").

WHATEVER YOU NEED

In what other lives have I known your kiss
And what forgotten moments have I felt like this
The way you touch me I come undone
You know me more than anyone
Whatever you want

In what other lives have I touched your face
And what words did we whisper in a strange forbidden place
To be with you baby is to find myself
We're two of a kind, you and I
I couldn't love anyone else

You are my beggining, my end
You are my lover, my friend
In this life, in this time

Whatever you want, whatever you need
I will be right here waiting, baby baby baby
Whatever you want, whatever you need
I will be right here waiting, yeah yeah yeah yeah

In what other lives did I feel your skin
And when exactly did I breathe you in
Feel like I've known you for a thousand years
You're so familiar to me and there is no fear

You are my beggining, my end
You are my lover, my friend
In this life, in this time

Whatever you want, whatever you need
I will be right here waiting, baby baby baby
Whatever you want, whatever you need
I will be right here waiting, yeah yeah yeah yeah

Watch the sun go down, yeah yeah
My past and future in you are bound, oh yeah
I watch as time moves on, I'm alive and strong
And when I'm with you there's no right, no wrong

Whatever you want, whatever you need
I will be right here waiting, baby baby baby
Whatever you want, whatever you need
I'm gonna be right here waiting, baby baby
Whatever you want (whatever you want), whatever you need (whatever you need)
I will be right here waiting, baby baby baby
Whatever you want, whatever you need
Whatever you want
Right here, right here waiting
Right here, right here waiting

ALL THE WOMAN

Can't you see, this is me
Can't you see, this is me

Don't walk crowded streets
Choose every dream from a magazine stand
I don't buy into that
All-day TV shows
Sell their souls just to make living easy
I don't buy into that
I don't need satin and lace, no no no
I'll bring a smile to your face

I'll never be a fire but I will be the flame
I'll never be a diamond but I'll never be fake, no
I've never been a winner but I still play the game
Can't you see that this is me
I'm all the woman that I wanna be

Can't you see, this is me (a woman)
Can't you see, this is me

Good times can't get enough
Life can be tough but it's all for a reason
I sure buy into that
Life goes around and around
We seek what we found 'cause it's all an illusion
I sure buy into that
I know the waters of fate, yeah, yeah
Will keep on flowing my way

I'll never be a fire but I will be the flame
I'll never be a diamond but I'll never be fake, no no
I've never been a winner but I still play the game
Baby can't you see that this is me
I'm all the woman that I want

I've never been affraid of myself
I don't buy into that, I don't buy into that
I don't wanna be nobody else
I don't buy into that, I don't buy into that, I don't buy into that

I'll never be a fire but I will be the flame (be the flame)
I'll never be a diamond but I'll never be fake (oh no no no)
I've never been a winner but I still play the game
Baby baby can't you see that this is me
I'm all the woman that I want (all I wanna be)
I'll never be a fire but I will be the flame (be the flame)
I'll never be a diamond but I'll never be fake (oh no no no)
I've never been a winner but I still play the game
Can't you see this is me
And I'm all the woman that I wanna be

WHEN THE HEARTACHE IS OVER

Once in a lifetime you find
Someone to show you the way
Someone to make your decisions
But I let you lead me astray
Who did you think you were fooling
Said you were missing me blind
But the truth is I knew you were lying
You were using me time after time

When the heartache is over
I know I won't be missing you (missing you)
Won't look over my shoulder
'Cause I know that I can live without you
Oh live without you
Oh I can live without you

Time to move on with my life now
Leaving the past all behind
I can make my own decisions
It was only a matter of time
Sometimes I look back in anger
Thinking about all the pain
But I know that I'm stronger without you
And that I'll never need you again

When the heartache is over
I know I won't be missing you (missing you)
Won't look over my shoulder
'Cause I know that I can live without you
Oh live without you
Oh I can live without you

When the heartache is over
I know I won't be missing you
Won't look over my shoulder
'Cause I know that I can live without you
When the heartache is over
I know I won't be missing you (missing you)
Won't look over my shoulder
'Cause I know that I can live without you
Yeah I can live without you
Live without you

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING'S CHANGED

Absolutely nothing's changed

This is my heart talking
It's time to face reality
This spell I'm under can't last much longer
Any fool can see
You come here with your promises
But I remember all the lies
I bought the laughter, happy ever after
How could I be so blind, so blind

'Cause absolutely nothing's changed
You play with my emotions
I'll live to fight another day
I´m bruised but I ain´t broken
I ain't broken

Now you say you're sorry
For everything you put me through
You wanna make up, I just gotta wake up
It's the same old you
The same old you

'Cause absolutely nothing's changed
You play with my emotions
I'll live to fight another day
I'm bruised but I ain't broken
Ain't broken

Ooh I've been dreaming but it's over now (bad dreams are over now)
I'm gonna rise up, rise above all the troubles and tears
I'm down but I ain't out

Play with my emotions
I maybe bruised, I ain't broken

'Cause absolutely nothing's changed
At last my eyes are open
I'm gonna live to fight another day
I maybe bruised but I ain´t broken, ain't broken

'Cause absolutely nothing's changed
Abolutely nothing
I'll live to fight another day
I maybe bruised but I ain´t broken

'Cause absolutely nothing's changed
Abolutely nothing
I'm gonna live to fight another day
I maybe bruised but I ain´t broken

'Cause absolutely nothing's changed

TALK TO MY HEART

I found a friend, someone to help me
And a place I can be myself when I'm in trouble now
I've lost it and I don't know how
I come to you 'cause you can show me
Get me back to the me I know with a remedy
Baby I need your therapy
With your healing kiss you know how to make my mind relax
I will listen to the words you say and just lie back

Talk to my heart that's where real talkin' starts
Words of love that cut straight to my heart
Reach out and touch, so few words say so much
I can hear you when you tell it like it is
When you talk straight to my heart

I guess it shows I need attention
Somehow you're asking all the right questions that I've gotta say
What's been on my mind these days
And I know you know just how to make my mind react
When it's coming straight from you that's my first point of contact

Talk to my heart that's where real talkin' starts
Words of love that cut straight to my heart
Reach out and touch, so few words say so much
I can hear you when you tell it like it is
When you talk straight to my...

I'm bad at making decisions
But being alone with you just feels so right, feels so right
I'm losing my inibitions
With every minute I share with you tonight, share it with you tonight

Talk, talk to me
To my heart, to my heart, oh yeah
Come one, come on and reach out
'Cause the words just mean so much
I can hear you
When you talk right to my heart

Talk to my heart that's where real talkin' starts
Words of love that cut straight to my heart
Reach out and touch, so few words say so much
I can hear you when you tell it like it is
When you talk straight to my heart
I can hear you, I can hear you

DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY

All of my life, all of my life
I've been searching for a love like ours
Somewhere to stay, somewhere safe in your arms
I was so sure
Are you really saying your heart's changing
Do you really mean goodbye

Don't leave me this way, no, no
Don't tell me it's over
We've only begun and our love is so young
You're leading me nowhere
Don't leave me this way
Don't leave me this way

Say what's on your mind, one thing at a time
And I promise you we'll talk it through
Don't walk away, there's so much more to say
Though my words seem lost on you
Can't believe you're talking like we're just friends
Can't you see the tears I cry

Don't leave me this way, no, no
Don't tell me it's over
We've only begun and our love is so young
You're leading me nowhere
Don't leave me this way
Don't leave me this way

Are you really saying your heart's changing
Do you really mean it this time
Baby

Don't leave me this way, oh no
Don't tell me it's over
We've only begun and our love is so young
You're leading me nowhere
Don't leave me this way
Don't leave me this way
No, don't tell me that it's over
We've only begun and our love is so young
Don't leave me now

Don't leave me, don't leave me this way (don't leave me this way)
Don't leave me, don't leave me this way (oh you're gonna leave me now)
Don't leave me, don't leave me this way
Don't leave me, don't leave me this way

Don't leave me this way
If you'll just take a little bit of time
You just might wanna change your mind
Don't leave me this way
Don't leave me this way

GO AHEAD

You see me smile but you paint an ugly face
Everything you do is all about the chase
Don't let them see you cry
Don't let them know
You won't lay down and die for their show

Why don't you go ahead tear my heart out
Why don't you go ahead hang me out to dry
Go ahead play your game, go ahead
Spread my name all over your blood red sky

They colour your stars till the light begins to fade
But never give up 'cause every dog has its day
Don't let them see you cry
Don't let them know
You won't lay down and die for their show

Why don't you go ahead tear my heart out
Why don't you go ahead hang me out to dry
Go ahead play your game, go ahead
Spread my name all over your blood red sky
Go ahead

Why don't you go ahead, go ahead, go ahead
Why don't you go ahead hang me out to dry
I said go ahead play your game, go ahead play your game, go ahead play your game
Your blood red sky
Why don't you go ahead tear my heart out
Why don't you go ahead lay me out to dry
Go ahead
I said go ahead play your game, go ahead
Spread my name all over your blood red sky
Go ahead
Why don't you go ahead tear my heart out
Why don't you go ahead hang me out to dry
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go ahead and hang my heart out
I said go ahead and play your game, go ahead
Spread my name all over your blood red sky
Your blood red sky
Blood red sky

WITHOUT YOU

I'm feeling low, I tear out my hair
Walking 'round in circles like I don't care
One shoe off, the other one on
Cause I threw the damn shoe the night that you were gone
I'm in the mood, I'm in such a mess
My heart is broken and I'm in distress
Don't wanna eat, don't wanna sleep
'Cause I'm thinking 'bout the dirty way you treated me
I'm in no mood for company
You see I just don't want your pity

'Cause I call your name to drive me insane
And I feel the need to make my heart bleed
And baby I don't know why I'm drowning in tears
'Cause I don't wanna die
So I find myself another way to learn to live another day
Without you yeah

Looking down at the way I get dressed
I need to know is that why you left
My face is sweet but my head is wrecked
By the things that you said on the night you left
You can keep your sympathy
Because I just don't want your pity

'Cause I call your name to drive me insane
And I feel the need to make my heart bleed
And baby I don't know why I'm drowning in tears
'Cause I don't wanna die
So I find myself another way to learn to live another day
Without you

Yeah yeah yeah yeah
I can live without you, I'm telling you girl now
I can live without you, can you hear me

You know you can keep your sympathy
Because I just don't want your pity

'Cause I call your name to drive me insane
And I feel the need to make my heart bleed
And baby I don't know why I'm drowning in tears
'Cause I don't wanna die
So I find myself another way to learn to live another day
Without you baby

I call your name (I call your name) to drive you insane (to drive me insane)
'Cause I feel the need ('cause I feel the need) to make my heart bleed (to make my heart bleed)
And baby I don't know why I'm drowning in tears
'Cause I don't wanna die
So I find myself another way to learn to live another day
Without you baby

FALLING

Falling
Help me, I´m falling
Helplessly falling
Falling for you
And mountains
There may be mountains
The highest mountain
Won´t keep me from you, oh yeah

For you I´d swim across an ocean wide
Just to be with you I'd even dare to fly
It´s the miracle that happens every time
I fall for you, oh yeah
And forever and forever without end
I just keep...

Falling
Needing and wanting
The only one thing
That I want is you, oh yeah

For you I´d swim across an ocean wide
Just to be with you I'd even dare to fly
It´s the miracle that happens every time
I fall for you, oh yeah
And forever and forever without end
I fall for you

For you I´d swim across an ocean wide
Just to be with you I'd even dare to fly
It´s the miracle that happens every time
I fall for you, oh yeah
And forever and forever without end
I fall for you, oh yeah
And forever, forever without end
I fall for you

I fall for you

I WILL BE THERE

This is the life you saved laid out before you
Everything that I think I have been and what I am now
Nothing can change the way I feel about you
Better we go on our separate ways
Nothing is left but the endless days
Nothing to cry but your name

Don't you look back, don't say a word
I will be lonely for you, I will be standing for you
Don't you despair
I will be there for you
I will be there

Maybe this time next year we'll be together
You can wipe away all of the tears, bring truth to the lies
There was a silent dream, we made a promise
We'd be there for each other forever
Aboard like a ship on an ocean's roar
Beating a path to your open door
Nothing will keep me away

Don't you look back, don't say a word
I will be lonely for ya, I will be standing for you
Don't you despair
I will be there for you
Each night I pray to God above
You will be waiting for me, you will be lonely for me
Don't you despair
I will be there for you
I will be there

Don't you look back, don't say a word
I will be lonely for ya, I will be standing for you
Don't you despair
I will be there for you
Farewell to you, goodbye for me
I will be waiting for you
I will be lonely for you
Don't you despair
'Cause I will be there for you
I will be there

TWENTY FOUR SEVEN

Some folks say there's a price on love
Watch your freedom go, watch your freedom go
Just can't breathe with your head in the glove
Watch your freedom go, baby I don't know
But how can they mean it
How come they give it up
How long until they see
The modern laws of lovin' don't apply to me

Twenty Four Seven, stay here with me
Twenty Four Seven, throw away the key
Twenty Four Seven, I don't wanna be free

You get by if you kiss and tell
Hear the people say, hear the people say
Two strong hearts gotta share one cell
Hear the people say but it ain't my way
How can they mean it
How come they add it up
I'll give my heart and my soul
If loving you is prison I don't need parol

Twenty Four Seven, stay here with me
Twenty Four Seven, throw away the key
Twenty Four Seven, I don't wanna be free, free, free
Twenty Four Seven, around the clock
Twenty Four Seven, I never want it to stop
Twenty Four Seven, mmmm, here with me

I'm gonna count the time
That you're gonna be mine
Seven days a week
Twenty four hours ain't enough for me

How can they mean it
How come they add it up
I'm gonna give my heart and my soul
If loving you is prison I don't need parol

Twenty four seven, stay here with me
Twenty four seven, throw away the key
Twenty four seven, I don't wanna be free, free, free
Twenty four seven, stay here with me, with me
Twenty four seven, throw away the key, the key
Twenty four seven, I wanna twenty four seven with you, you, you, you you,
Twenty four seven, non-stop love
Twenty four seven
Twenty four seven
I wanna twenty four seven
