Walter Trout pays tribute to blues icon Luther Allison on his 23rd solo release Luther's Blues. 12 of the 13 tracks on the CD are associated with Allison except for the Trout original, "When Luther Played the Blues." Trout first met Luther in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1986, which provided the location shot for the CD cover. Trout maintains he had the idea for this album since that first meeting. The songs Trout chose to cover are taken from Allison's albums Songs from the Road, Bad Love, Blue Streak, Reckless, and Soul Fixin' Man. As usual, Trout's guitar dexterity is undisputed, but his top-notch vocal work deserves equal attention, especially on the heart-wrenching tracks "Freedom," and "Pain in the Streets." In an era where blues tribute albums are abundant, and in some cases the tribute is anything but, Luther's Blues rises to the top with the best of them.

Al Campbell - All Music Guide

Walter's latest release 'Luther s Blues A Tribute To Luther Allison' is a powerful blues album that pays homage to an iconic figure  in the blues world, Luther Allison. The album is 12 solid tracks of inspired blues-rock, fueled by Walter's classic guitar sound and his band's powerful support. Trout's practical schooling in blues started when he arrived in Los Angeles in 1973 and got gigs behind Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Finis Tasby, Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulsom, Percy Mayfield and Joe Tex. In 1981 he joined the remaining original members of Canned Heat. But the real turning point was his tenure with British blues giant John Mayall. Trout became part of the Bluesbreakers' lineage of great guitarists along with Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Beginning in 1984 he shared six-string duties with Coco Montoya in Mayall's band, creating a flexible guitar dynamic that helped provide the Bluesbreakers a renaissance that returned the group to the apex of the international blues touring circuit.

Hard-hitting Chicago blues complete with swirling B3, gritty vocal performances, and in-your-face guitar.  This is the best way to describe Luther’s Blues, the latest album from Walter Trout.  This is the first cover album that Trout has attempted, and he does as well as can be expected, given that he has made a tribute album.

It is not easy to put together a good album of Luther Allison covers, but if there is one man who can do his work justice, it is Walter Trout.  A brilliant guitarist in his own right who knows Allison’s music, Trout captures Allison’s classic Chicago sound while adding bits and pieces of his own musical innovation to the project.

“Cherry Red Wine” is one of the greatest blues songs ever written, and Trout’s version proves it.  It is one of a handful of truly magical tracks, the others being “Chicago,” “Just as I Am,” and “Freedom.”  Being a tribute album, there isn’t a great deal of variety, but all of the songs are compelling.

It is rare that there is a cover or tribute album that is really good, but, as Trout himself admits, the goal of this album is to lead the listener to Allison’s original recordings, and this album will most certainly do that.  Allison’s stellar recordings set a very high bar for Trout to meet, perhaps an unfairly high bar, but a bar that Trout meets, and even exceeds it on a few songs.  Trout does about as good of a job as possible on a tribute album, and should be recognized as having done so.  Nevertheless, Luther Allison is Luther Allison and there is no substitute for the original recordings of these songs.
