About Traveling Wilburys:

Reversing the usual process by which groups break up and give way to solo careers, the Traveling Wilburys are a group made up of solo stars. The group was organized by former Beatle George Harrison (b.Feb 25, 1943), former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne (b.Dec 30, 1947), Bob Dylan (b.May 24, 1941), Tom Petty (b.Oct 20, 1953), and Roy Orbison (b.Apr 23, 1936 - d.Dec 6, 1988), thus representing three generations of rock stars. In 1988, the five (who had known each other for years) came together to record a Harrison B-side single and ended up writing and recording an album on which they shared lead vocals. It turned out to be a way to transcend the high expectations made of any of them as individuals, and a delighted public sent the album to number three, with two singles, "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line," hitting the charts. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack only a few weeks after the album's release. Two years later, the remaining quartet released a second album, inexplicably titled Vol. 3. It was another million-selling hit.

William Ruhlmann - All Music Guide

The idea of Dylan, Orbison, Harrison, Lynne, Petty, and session drummer Jim Keltner getting together on a single album was pretty bizarre, inspiring curiosity and a little dread. Instead of trying to create something on a grand scale, these guys achieved much more by tossing together a refreshingly playful and unpretentious collection of homey pop/rock tunes. "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line" were minor hits from this release.

Rick Clark - All Music Guide

"Handle me with care" ist hier mein absoluter Lieblingstitel, alle Musiker können hier Ihre Stärken ausspielen.

Two of the original five Wilburys have moseyed on, mortality-wise: George Harrison and Roy Orbison. But what really sounds boneyard-bound on these reissues is Jeff Lynne's production. In the late 1980s, he produced every other record on rock radio (i.e., the non-Phil Collins ones), giving them all the same fussy synths and sugary guitars. According to legend, Lynne got work because he was a nice bloke with zero ego, brilliant at soothing divas in the studio. But "Handle With Care" and "Margarita" show why the 1980s were the dregs of major-label rock sonics. The first Wilburys album has a few good Dylan lines, but the only real keeper is "Tweeter and the Monkey Man," an outrageous self-parody disguised as a Springsteen rip, as funny as "Desolation Row." Download it now for your next Dylan mix CD.
