"...eine musikalische und klangliche Offenbarung."

C. Böhm in Audio 5/88

On what turned out to be their final new album, Talking Heads, recording in Paris with co-producer Steve Lillywhite, returned to an expanded format that was heavy on African talking drums and other percussion, plus horns on a couple of tracks. It made for a burbling, rhythmic sound that de-emphasized the melodies and lyrics, making the songs less memorable. But then, lyricist/singer David Byrne seemed to have less to say, his words as scattered as ever but seeming not so much surprising as random. The most coherent lyric also made for the best song, "(Nothing But) Flowers," a fanciful vision of reverse-urbanization in which discount stores turned into cornfields. But even that sounded familiar -- for Byrne. Naked was one of Talking Heads' more pleasant efforts, but also one of its least substantial.

William Ruhlmann - All Music Guide

Coming at the end of the Talking Heads' discography, NAKED finds the Heads returning to many elements of the complex, polyrhythmic arrangements that marked their work earlier in the decade, prior to the rootsier LITTLE CREATURES. Reflecting a more European influence, NAKED was recorded in Paris and produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brings to bear his gift for making sprawling arrangements sound remarkably down-to-earth and radio-friendly (see U2). The album's truly special guest is former Smith Johnny Marr, who lends his imaginative fretboard work and timeless pop sensibility to tunes such as "Nothing but Flowers," and "Cool Water." Other standouts include "Blind," a bombastic groove that foreshadows Byrne's soon-to-follow solo work. Sparse, spastic, and filled with intellectual social rage, NAKED is at once a return to form and a fitting sendoff for one of music's relentlessly original and truly important forces.

Now that the Heads have received their due in the marketplace, the band has gone back to their roots, drawing together all the African and Latin rhythms, funky beats, youthful edge, pop smarts and biting humor of their past into one glorious whole. Naked is anything but, being a layered, textured album (it's produced by Steve Lillywhite with the band) that has the quartet at its core but uses a mammoth cast of extras to achieve the band's vision, including ex-Smith-for-hire Johnny Marr, Wally Badarou, and the Pogues' accordion-playing James Fearnley. The advance single "(Nothing But) Flowers" only hints at Naked's joys: "Blind," "Mr. Jones," "The Facts Of Life" and "The Democratic Circus" (sure to be a favorite in Iowa) are among the high points of this deeply satisfying disc. Get Naked!
