After two critically acclaimed but only moderately selling albums, Los
Lobos was hired to record songs for the film biography of Hispanic '50s
rocker Ritchie Valens, resulting in this soundtrack album, which, in
addition to eight Los Lobos recordings, features tracks by Marshall
Crenshaw, Brian Setzer, and others. Los Lobos' remake of the title song
topped the charts, as did this album, which went on to sell two million
copies. The result has been something of a career dilemma for the band,
which went back to being a critically acclaimed, modest seller
afterwards.
William Ruhlmann, All-Music Guide
La Bamba the movie tells of when rock and roll was about joy, love and
liberation, rather than anger, sex and rebellion (and, later, drugs,
counterculture and money). It's the story of Ritchie Valens, the early
pop sensation who was 50% inspiration and 50% machination, and how his
fleeting life in the fast lane affected his already turbulent family
life. Valens' music is performed by Los Lobos, the only modern-day
equivalent of Valens' "barrio kid makes it big" story, and it comes off
portraying either a) what Los Lobos could have sounded like then, or b)
what Ritchie Valens might have sounded like today. The arrangements are
the same as, and the performances and production are faithful (if
tighter and cleaner, respectively), to Valens', whose music embodied
the fast, loose and passionate style of the best early rockers. In the
film, Brian Setzer performs as Eddie Cochran ("Summertime Blues" is
included here), Marshall Crenshaw as Buddy Holly ("Crying, Waiting,
Hoping") and Howard Huntsberry as Jackie Wilson (`Lonely Teardrops").
Each does a passable job, but none embody the music as well as Los
Lobos does Valens (who is played by Lou Diamond Phillips, in a
thoroughly convincing lip sync job). La Bamba is a vivid reminder of
what rock was all about, and the roots, both emotional and musical,
that we often forget. See the movie, and if you get the message, play
the record.

FRAMED
I was walkin' down the street, minding my own affair
When two policemen grabbed me unaware
They said, is your name Henry, I says why sure?
He says you're the boy I been lookin' for
I was framed, framed, I was blamed
Framed, well I never do nothing
But I always get blamed, oh framed
They took me to the line where those bright lights shine
There was ten poor souls like me in that line
I knew I was a victim of someone's evil plan
When a stool-pigeon walked in an' says
Thats your man!
I was framed, framed, I was blamed
Oh, framed, framed, framed
Well, I never do nothing
But I always get blamed
Well, the prosecuting attorney started a-prosecuting me
Man, that cat didn't give me the one, but the third degree
He says, where were you in the night of July 1953
Man, I was just home, just a tweedle-ee-dee
I was framed, oh framed, I was blamed
Oh, framed, framed, framed
Well, I never do nothing
But I always get framed, oh framed
Oh framed...
DONNA
Oh Donna, Oh Donna, Oh Donna, Oh Donna
I had a girl.
Donna was her name.
Since you left me, I've never been the same
Cause I love my girl.
Donna where can you be?
Where can you be?
Now that you're gone I'm left all alone
All by myself to wonder and yoam
Cause I love my girl
Donna where can you be?
Where can you be?
Well, Darling now that you're gone
I don't know what I'll do
Cause I had all my love for you
Oh Donna, Oh Donna, Oh Donna, Oh Donna
Oh Donna, Oh Donna
LONELY TEARDROPS
My heart is crying, crying lonely teardrops
My pillow's never dry of lonely teardrops
Come home, come ho-o-o-o-o-ome
Just say you will (say you will)
Sa-ay you will (say you will)
Hey-ah-hey (say you will)
My heart is crying, crying lonely teardrops
My pillow's never dry of lonely teardrops
Come home, come ho-o-o-o-o-ome
Just say you will, say you-ou-ou wi-ill (say you will)
Sa-ay you will (say you will)
Hey-ah-hey (say you will)
Just give me a-a-a-nother chance for our romance
Come on and tell me that one day you'll retu-u-urn
'cause every day that you've been gone away
You'll know-a my heart does nothing but bu-u-urn
Crying lonely teardrops
My pillow's never dry of lonely teardrops
Come home, come ho-o-o-o-o-ome
Just say you will, say you wi-ill (say you will)
Sa-ay you will (say you will)
Hey-ah-hey (say you will)
Say it right now, baby (say you will)

Say it right now, baby (say you will)
Fade
CRYING, WAITING, HOPING
Crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back
I just can't seem to get you off my mind
Crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back
You're the one I love
And I think about you all the time
Crying, my tears keep falling all night long
Waiting, it feels so useless, I know it's wrong
To keep a-crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back
Maybe someday soon
Things will change and you'll be mine
Crying, my tears keep falling all night long
Waiting, it feels so useless, I know it's wrong
To keep a-crying, waiting, hoping you'll come back
Maybe someday soon
Things will change and you'll be mine
Crying, waiting, hoping...
SUMMERTIME BLUES
Well I'm gonna raise a fuss
And I'm gonna raise a holler
About workin' all summer
Just tryin' to earn a dollar
Well, I went to my boss
Who governs me
He said, "No, dice, bud
You gotta work late"
Sometime I wonder
What I'm gonnna do
There ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
Well, my mom and papa told me
Now you better earn some money
If one of you is gonna go
Ridin' next Sunday
Well, I didn't go to work
I told my boss I was sick
He said, "You can't use the car
'Cause you didn't work a lick"
Sometime I wonder
What I'm gonnna do
There ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
Gonna save two weeks
Gonna have a fine vacation
Gonna take my problem
To the United Nations
Well, I went to my congressman
He sent me back a note
It said, "I''d like to help you, hon
But you're too young to vote"
Sometime I wonder
What I'm gonnna do
There ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
Now there ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
Now there ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
WHO DO YOU LOVE
I walked forty-seven miles of barbed wire,
I got a cobra snake for a necktie,
I got a brand new house by the road side,
Made out of rattlesnake hide.
I got me a chimney made on top,
Made from a human skull,
Now come on, take a little walk with me,
Now who do you love?
Come on Arlene, take me by the hand,
Let me know you understand,
Who do you love? ...
Ride nine times on the midnight train
Through the fire and cold rain,
Who do you love? ...
I've got a tombstone hand in a graveyard mine,
Just twenty-two and I don't mind dying,
Who do you love? ...
by Ellas McDaniel a.k.a. Bo Diddley
I walked 47 miles of barbed wire, I use a cobra snake for a necktie
I got a brand new house on the roadside, made from rattlesnake hide
I got a brand new chimney made on top, made out of a human skull
Now come on, take a little walk with me, Arlene and tell me:
who do you love?
who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
I've got a tombstone hand and a graveyard mind,
I'm just twenty-two and I don't mind dyin'
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
I rode around the town'n use a rattlesnake whip,
take it easy Arlene don't give me no lip
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
The night was dark and the sky was blue, down the alley a house wagon flew
Hit a bump and somebody screamed, you should'a heard just what I seen
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Arlene took me by my hand, she said, "Ooo-eee Bo, I understand"
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

GOODNIGHT, MY LOVE (PLEASANT DREAMS)
Good night, my love
Good night, my love
Good night, my love
Pleasant dreams and sleep tight my love
May tomorrow be sunny and bright
And bring you closer to me
Before you go
There's just one thing I want to know
Is your love still warm for me
Or has it gone cold?
If you should awake
In the still of the night
Please have no fears
I'll be there
You know I care
Please give your love to me, dear
