UK edition of the hit soundtrack is so much better than the domestic
because it adds Aretha Franklin's classic track 'Respect' which is so
crucial to the film, as well as four additional tracks, Pretenders
'Don't Get Me Wrong', Andy Williams 'Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You',
Artful Dodger 'Woman Trouble' & Aaron Soul 'Ring, Ring, Ring'. Also
features different artwork. 2001 release. Features 5 tracks not on the
US version: Aretha Franklin - 'Respect', Pretenders - 'Don't Get Me
Wrong', Andy Williams - 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You', Artful Dodger
& Robbie Craig - 'Woman Trouble', & Aaron Soul - 'Ring, Ring,
Ring'.
Based on the comic best-seller, Bridget Jones's Diary documents a year
in the life of an unmarried 30-something publisher. She searches for
love, self-confidence, and a slimmer waistline in a struggle to become
the "perfect modern woman." The resulting soundtrack assembles a
cavalry of strong female artists. Chaka Khan's dance anthem "I'm Every
Woman" feels like the centerpiece for this collection that includes new
music from Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynn, and Tracy Bonham. Aside from score
composer Patrick Doyle, the only boys invited to play here are British
heartthrob Robbie Williams and Marvin Gaye, who shares his space with
Diana Ross on their Motown classic, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your
Heart)." Williams appears twice and offers one of the many remakes on
the album, a charming version of Frank Sinatra's "Have You Met Miss
Jones?" Other covers include a just-as-sappy rendition of Eric Carmen's
"All By Myself" and a smooth R&B take on Van Morrison's "Someone
Like You." Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell contributes a catchy but
slightly painful version of "It's Raining Men." Some of the album's
more interesting tracks come from it's lesser-known artists. Popular
U.K. acts Gabrielle and Alisha's Attic deliver distinctive ballads and
promising New Yorker Rosey brands her own form of bluesy pop/rock on
"Love." Despite several edgy performers, the collection has an easy
listening feel. It lacks the feel-good hits common to successful
soundtracks and may have been well served to trade in some of the
sentiment for a little more fun. However, each selection feels right
for the film. The album is nostalgic while still in vogue, full of both
kitsch and ardor, just like any romantic comedy should be.
Helen Fielding's popular Bridget Jones character - a hapless British
single gal who spends her days obsessing over men, cigarettes, and
calories - has been criticized by more than a few feminists for her
Cosmo girl conformist mentality. Perhaps this thoughtful soundtrack,
which launches with Grammy-winning ass-kicker Shelby Lynne's "Killin'
Kind," will make up for Bridget's self-doubt. Sheryl Crow turns in her
strongest single in years, the saucy "Kiss That Girl," while Chaka
Khan's classic "I'm Every Woman" is enough in itself to make any single
woman's Friday night complete - no date required, just a nice pair of
dancing shoes. A weepy, straightforward cover of Eric Carmen's "All by
Myself" by Jamie O'Neal is more hilarious than it is emotive; ditto for
Robbie Williams's karaoke-style take on Frank Sinatra's "Have You Met
Miss Jones?" Ignore former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell's tragic reworking
of the Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men" at all costs; it's the album's
regrettable one-night stand. The Beatles may have said all you need is
love, but what Bridget Jones needs is a nice soundtrack to get her
through a terrifying cesspool of womanizers and fruity alcoholic drinks.

Britain's favourite singleton, Bridget Jones, has finally made it to
the big screen (and onto the cover of this 19-track soundtrack),
bringing hope to lonely souls all over the country and a word of
warning to smug marrieds everywhere. For what should be called "the
best chick flick in the world...ever!" the soundtrack compilers have
come up with a dream tracklist - from classics such as Aretha
Franklin's "Respect", Jamie O'Neal's tearjerker "All By Myself" and
Andy Williams' "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", to more contemporary gems
from the likes of Gabrielle ("Out of Reach"), The Pretenders ("Don't
Get Me Wrong") and Artful Dodger ("Woman Trouble"). Plus you get the
added bonus of two unreleased Robbie Williams tracks - the big-band
stylings of "Have You Met Miss Jones?" and the tender "Not of this
Earth" - and, of course, the much-hyped karaoke-by-numbers of
"It's Raining Men" by Geri Halliwell and her pants. There are a couple
of fillers from Rosey and Alisha's Attic, but they don't distract too
much from the generally choice tracks on offer. As Bridget would say,
"v. good".

Sinatras "Have You Met Miss Jones?". Überhören Sie unter allen
Umständen die total misslungene Überarbeitung von "It's Raining Men"
der Weather Girls - hier von Ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell präsentiert;
es ist die bedauerliche Eintagsfliege dieses Albums. Die Beatles haben
zwar gesagt "All you need is Love", aber Bridget Jones braucht nicht
nur Liebe, sondern auch einen schönen Soundtrack, der sie durch den
Hexenkessel von Schürzenjägern und Cocktails begleitet.
