This tenth anniversary reissue of Soul II Soul's groundbreaking debut album provides a good opportunity to look back and see how influential it really was - these dark, jazz-inflected grooves still resonate in the deep house, acid jazz and illbient music of the late 1990s. And even if "Keep on Movin'," the album's lead track and centerpiece, is way overrated as a song, Caron Wheeler's voice still cuts through it shiningly; Rose Windross isn't far behind Wheeler on the more substantial "Fairplay." Bandleader Jazzie B, on the other hand, is a great arranger and a passable rapper (at his best on the very fine "Feelin' Free," which features the future members of Massive Attack on background vocals), but his singing sounds pretty sorry in this company. But the vocals are less important than the grooves, of course, and these are consistently excellent, often spiced up with jazz flute or buoyed by the strings of the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. The reissue adds an extra 30 minutes of remixes, including a great drum n' bass treatment of "Keep on Movin'" and an equally compelling remix of the Caron Wheeler showcase "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)."

When Jazzie B and his Bristol crew released this debut - which was called Keep on Movin' in the U.S., after its first hit - in 1989, at the height of twice-a-second dance beats, it was a landmark event in the club music scene. They slowed down their rhythms and brought in subtle, soulful vocals (mostly from Caron Wheeler); more intriguingly, they structured the disc like a club DJ set. Some songs, such as the giddy "Fairplay," were presented straight, but others appeared only as almost-instrumental dub or as a groove with toasting-influenced spiels by Jazzie or (in the case of the smash "Back to Life") a cappella. This reissue expands the original with some B-sides, alternate versions, and the fully orchestrated single version of "Back to Life," as well as a superfluous drum & bass remix of "Keep on Movin.'"

Douglas Wolk - Amazon.com essential recording

Ten years after releasing one of the greatest modern soul albums ever made, it's still hard to fully comprehend the magnitude of influence UK crew Soul II Soul had on today's music-makers. This record should help. Soul II Soul took a dub-reggae sound-system aesthetic, mixed it with bits of hip-hop-style production and worked in the infallible soul of vocalist Caron Wheeler to plant seeds for dance music ever since - from acid jazz to jungle to the group Massive Attack. This 10th Anniversary Edition of Soul II Soul's debut album (it was re-named Keep On Movin' in the US), reveals the sleek studio work of producers Nellee Hooper and Jazzie B. as timeless jewels, especially on tracks like "Keep On Movin'" and "Jazzie's Groove." Surprisingly, most of the six remixes that accompany this special edition - culled from 12-inch singles - hold up as well. Back in the summer of '89, these songs defined a UK dance revolution. Today, as the album's title suggested all along, they remain classics.
