To say this is a great album of dance-oriented synth-pop music is to sell it extremely short; this is simply a great album, period. Somerville's soaring tenor may take some getting used to, but the songs, many of them dealing with homophobia and alienation (none more eloquently than "Smalltown Boy") are compelling vignettes about the vagaries of life as a gay man. Cynics predisposed to dismissing entire genres of music based on trendiness or a limited appeal ("dance music is for dancing, not listening") miss the point in lumping this in with more mindless forays into techno or neo-disco. As the Pet Shop Boys (the world's greatest disco band) proved a few years later, you can have substantive content and wrap it up in a compelling, visceral, dance-oriented package. Few bands understood this better, or earlier, than Bronski Beat.

John Dougan - All Music Guide

Following his exit from Bronski Beat in early 1985, falsetto vocalist Jimmy Somerville formed the neo-disco duo the Communards with classically-trained pianist Richard Coles; originally dubbed the Committee, they ran afoul of another group using the same name, and adopted the Communards title in tribute to a group of 19th-century French Republicans. The duo bowed in late 1985 with the Top 30 U.K. hit "You Are My World," the first of some 30-odd singles and EPs released during their relatively brief lifespan; a self-titled debut LP followed in 1986, as did the Communards' chart-topping remake of the Thelma Houston classic "Don't Leave Me This Way." After another U.K. Top Ten hit, "So Cold the Night," in 1987 they issued the Stephen Hague-produced Red, which featured their smash cover of Gloria Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye." Despite their success, the Communards disbanded in 1988, and Somerville began a solo career.
