For most of the 1980s, as both a solo artist and front man for the Communards and Bronksi Beat, Jimmy Somerville's unmistakable falsetto blared across quaking dance club floors. And, on his latest, Manage the Damage, Somerville's love-it-or-leave-it voice sounds even stronger as he eschews past campy musical styles in favor of more contemporary dance production. Here, Somerville, an early techno/dance pioneer, updates his arsenal of disco rhythms with beat-big tempos, house samples, and trip-hop beats. The opener "Here I Am" features tranced-out beats - similar to sounds the Pet Shop Boys first pioneered - and Somerville's operatic ululating wail. "Lay Down" features loungy, laid back ambience while "My Life" is his foray into trip-hop territory. Somerville remains true to his roots with disco stompers like "Something to Live For" which you can expect to hear dance remixes of any day. Lyrically, Somerville pushes himself particularly on "Girl Falling Down," an emotional ballad about an abusive relationship. Manage the Damage and Somerville's latest incarnaion probably won't gain Somerville many new fans, but it's sure to delight those already in the know.
