After the release of Savage Amusement in 1988, the Scorpions expressed disdain toward the album, feeling that it was too polished when compared to their other work. Their longtime producer Dieter Dierks was replaced with well-known rock producer Keith Olsen, who would produce Crazy World and assist in making it one of the Scorpions' greatest recordings. Their music has certainly changed since Savage Amusement, sounding a little bit heavier and less glamorous. But even with the metal sound, the songs remain melodic and catchy. The power ballads on the album, "Wind of Change" and "Send Me an Angel," are arguably two of the band's greatest slow numbers, boasting soothing harmony and lyrics. Crazy World remains the Scorpions' finest '90s album, and is sure to please its listeners.

For the past five years it's appeared that the Scorpions were growing old gracefully (kinda like a European version of Kiss), using their iffy last couple of albums merely as springboards for their usual 18-month worldwide tours. Well, they're totally serious about this one: uniting with producer Keith Olsen (Whitesnake) and songwriting collaborator Jim Valiance (Aerosmith, Bryan Adams), the combination makes for a disc that's unashamedly "pop" but is a great rock album too: catchy riffs and harmonies drive home the strongest melodies yet found on a Scorpions LP. While they sometimes sound self-conscious under the big production (we hope that "Winds Of Change" is Klaus' last whistling solo!), this is their best album in something like eight years and deserves to win back as many old fans as new. Virgin killers: "Don't Believe Her," "Money And Fame," "Restless Nights" and especially the title track. NB: As on all Scorpions albums, in order to enjoy the music you must completely ignore the submoronic lyrics. According to the credits, here it somehow took three collaborators to write gems like "Big time in Paris/It's c'est Ia vie for me tonight," "You know nothing about loving/You lost somewhere down the line," and "Oh yeah/She'll take you there/I think you know what I mean." Von den Exzessen wirklicher Schwermetall-Bands wie AC/DC sind die deutschen Scorpions Lichtjahre entfernt. Mindestens aber kündigt das erste Album für die neue Marke von mehr Power und frischem Dampf. Vor allem Sänger Klaus Meine strapaziert sich bis zum Anschlag, ohne selbst bei härtester Gangart (Kicks After Six, Hit Between The Eyes) an die Leistungsgrenze zu kommen. Send Me An Angel, schönste unter zweieinhalb Balladen, hat selbst in einem Land, dessen Rundfunk Heavy-Rock unterschlägt, Hit-Chancen.

Mit "Crazy World" kehren die Skorpione zur Giftigkeit früherer Tage à la "Virgin Killer" oder "Breakout" zurück. Statt radiogeglätteter Refrains servieren die Hannoveraner jetzt ausgesprochen rohe Hardrock-Kost. Die für ein Scorpions-Album obligatorischen Balladen fehlen nicht ("Wind Of Change", "Send Me An Angel"). Aber viele Kompositionen können nicht überzeugen.
