There was no doubt whose night it was — by the time the Grammy ceremony started, Santana had already won six of the coveted awards.
The 52-year-old Santana and his comeback effort, Supernatural, ended up taking home eight statues, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year, while his hit single, "Smooth," netted its writers, Itaal Shur and Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, Song of the Year honors. Santana's eight Grammys tied a record set by Michael Jackson in 1983, when The Gloved One took home the same number of awards for Thriller.



Dass Santana einer der Abräumer des Abends werden würde, war einerseits abzusehen, aber andererseits gar nicht so unspannend. Nicht etwa mit einer Neuauflage von einem seiner Klassiker ("Samba Pa Ti", "Oye Como Va" oder "Black Magic Woman"), sondern mit dem Album "Supernatural" holte sich Santana gleich neun Grammy Auszeichnungen. Nominiert war der in Mexiko Geborene, heute 52-Jährige, für elf Grammys.
Der in den USA gegenwärtige "Latin Music" Boom kam Santana, der in seiner 30-jährigen Karriere erst ein einziges Mal mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet worden war, sicherlich sehr entgegen, dass er jedoch, neben allen anderen Konkurrenten, ebenfalls nominierte junge US-Amerikaner lateinamerikanischer Herkunft, wie Ricky Martin oder Marc Anthony, so kräftig schlagen würde, damit hatten wohl nicht so viele gerechnet.
Seine Zusammenarbeit mit vor allem jungen Sängern und Musikern hatte ebenfalls dazu beigetragen, dass "Supernatural" ein derartiger Erfolg wurde. So engagierte der in erster Linie als Gitarrist bekannte Carlos Santana etwa Rob Thomas von der Rock Band Matchbox 20 aus Florida und gewann mit dem Song "Smooth" in den Kategorien Platte des Jahres und Song des Jahres. Außerdem nicht unbeteiligt an diesem Santana-Erfolg sind Wyclef Jean aus dem direkten Umfeld der großen Grammy Siegerin des letzten Jahres, Lauryn Hill, und der vor allem bei einem jungen Alternative Rock Publikum angesagte Sänger Everlast.



Santana was still a respected rock veteran in 1999, but it had been years since he had a hit. Early in the '90s, he severed ties with his long-time label Columbia, moving to Polydor, which gave him a boutique label.

The association didn't last too long -- only three albums, only one of which was a proper studio effort. It was enough to stall his recording momentum, even if he continued to fare well on the concert circuits. By 1999, it was time for him to relaunch his recording career and Clive Davis, the man who signed Santana to Columbia in 1968, offered him the opportunity to set up shop at his label, Arista.

In the tradition of comeback and label debuts by veteran artists in the '90s, Supernatural , Santana's first effort for Arista, is designed as a star-studded event. At first listen, there doesn't seem to be a track that doesn't have a guest star, which brings up the primary problem with the album -- despite several interesting or excellent moments, it never develops a consistent voice that holds the album together. The fault doesn't lay with the guest stars or even with Carlos, who continues to turn in fine performances. There's just a general directionless feeling to the record, enhanced by several songs that seem like excuses for jams, which, truth be told, isn't all that foreign on latter-day Santana records.

Then again, the grooves often play better than the ploys for radio play, but that's not always the case, since Lauryn Hill's "Do You Like the Way" (which also features Cee-Lo) and the Dust Brothers-produced, Eagle-Eye Cherry sung "Wishing It Was" are as captivating as the Eric Clapton duet, "The Calling." But that just confirms that Supernatural just doesn't have much of a direction, flipping between traditional Santana numbers and polished contemporary collaborations, which both extremes being equally likely to hit or miss. That doesn't quite constitute a triumph, but the peak moments of Supernatural are some of Santana's best music of the '90s, which does make it a successful comeback.

The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-'90s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo," "Africa Bamba," "Migra," "Primavera," and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms.

Thirty years after first signing with Clive Davis to Columbia Records, Santana has reunited with his mentor for his summer 1999 debut Arista Records release. The reunion has resulted in a truly Supernatural CD that unleashes a vibrant, soulful musical blend that is as timeless as it is contemporary. Filled with soaring riffs, inviting rhythms and an expansive one-world vibe, Carlos Santana has brought his musical vision to new heights. Ask Carlos Santana to describe Supernatural and he will only humbly offer that the sound of this collection is "not black, or white or gray. It is multi-dimensional. Supernatural is for me, simply, a serious jump-start."

Multi-dimensional is an understatement. Supernatural bridges cultural, generational and musical gaps that forge new and creative partnerships. Clive Davis, who served as the album's co-producer with Carlos, helped bring together a powerful and eclectic group of musical stars. Those who signed on to work on the CD came purely for their love of the music and their reverence to a musician that helped re-define music the day he walked on stage at Woodstock 30 years ago. Among the collaborators are five-time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill; Fugee and Grammy winner, Wyclef Jean; Everlast; Eric Clapton; Dave Matthews; Cee-Lo from Goodie MoB; Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20; Eagle Eye Cherry; the Dust Brothers; and, Mana. The Santana band, including "CT" Chester Thompson, Raul Rekow, Karl Perazzo, Tony Lindsay, Benny Rietveld and Rodney Holmes, comprises the core group of musicians on the recording. "You can really feel God's hand in this," Carlos humbly offers. "Usually when you do a CD with so many incredibly talented people there's no glue, there's no cohesiveness. But on Supernatural, everyone involved from the musicians to the engineers understood the intentions, motives and purpose of making this CD. We all hit the bullseye."

"Smooth" is the collection's first single. A salsa tinged, blues-smoked, mid-tempo rock song, it burrows its way into your consciousness and lingers there, as all classic songs should. "Some songs are just like tattoos for your brainÉyou hear them and then they are affixed to you," Carlos says. Produced by Matt Serletic (Matchbox 20, Aerosmith), it features moody and mysterious vocals from Rob Thomas, lead singer of the multi-platinum band Matchbox 20. Thomas co-penned the track as a sultry ode to love. As was the case with all of the artists who participated in the creation of Supernatural, for Rob, working with Carlos was a singular and emotional experience. "Somewhere in the middle of recording, it really hit me that I was actually jamming with Santana," offers Thomas. "As a musician, as a songwriter and as a lover of music, I think that something like this has made me better. To spend five minutes with Carlos is to look into someone who is without pretension and one who is pure talent. He is as fresh today as he was in 1968. He matters even more in fact."

Everlast made his contribution to the project with a haunting melody and powerful lyrics in the song "Put Your Lights On." Produced by Dante Ross, it's significant because it was the first song that Everlast wrote after open-heart surgery. "To be honest, I didn't know if I was gonna give this song up," Everlast says, "And, you know, if it wasn't Carlos, I wouldn't have." Carlos says that the song is one of his favorite tracks on the CD. He said, "it reminds me of the time when I played San Quentin prison for the real hard-core inmates. The intensity and the message that Everlast singsÉHey now, all you killers, put your lights onÉ is a powerful message to rescue people from having to be miserable." After working with Carlos on her multiple Grammy winning debut The Miseducation of É Lauryn Hill, Ms. Hill returns the favor by producing and writing the soulful track "Do You Like The Way." It teams Carlos up with Goodie MoB's Cee-Lo who was thrilled to work with him. "Everybody knows Carlos' music," Cee-Lo says. "Rappers, everyone." Carlos laughs, "I told my daughter that I was gonna work with Lauryn Hill and she didn't believe me!"

Wyclef brings the sultry Spanish textured stroll "Maria, Maria" to Supernatural. The track, co-produced by Wyclef and Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis, gracefully fuses Latin, African and pan-Caribbean influences and is ample proof of Carlos' across-the- board multicultural appeal. "Anyone who has ever picked up a guitar is a Carlos Santana fan," declares Wyclef. "He's the god of music and the god of guitar. With Carlos, I knew that all I had to do is show up with a pad and pen and it would just happen. Cause I knew that Carlos' energy would just bring the vibe." The vibe continues with a Dave Matthews' collaboration on the co-penned "Love Of My Life," featuring Dave Matthews Band drummer Carter Beauford. Carlos says, "I think that Dave channeled the spirit of Billie Holiday on this song. He is my brother and I really appreciate him not only as a friend, but also as a great musician. My daughter turned me on to Dave a couple of years ago, and I am forever grateful." Matthews echoes the same sentiment, "I remember at one point Carlos just hit this note and it was likeÉ there was no question. That note was Carlos and I realized that what he brings to the music is Carlos."

Supernatural is filled with other contemporary Latin music stars including tracks produced by Grammy winner KC Porter and "Corazon Espinado," co-written by and performed with Mana. "Every musician who participated on this record was on the same wavelength and the same artistic energy as I was," Carlos explains. "They had been hearing my music and feeling my spirit and I in turn, had been feeling theirs. Supernatural is a beautiful example of synchronicity." One listen to Supernatural and two things are obvious. First, this isn't a "star" tribute. Second, you will quickly understand that this is the next musical evolution of a man who has continued on his own musical journey without compromise.

Carlos says it best, "the whole process of making this record has been natural; as soon as we all got together in the studio, we all just heard the music. And because of that ease and that natural quality, making Supernatural has been a truly glorious experience."

Fans old and new have much to celebrate about SUPERNATURAL, Carlos Santana's Arista Records debut. After several years of quiet in the studio, Santana is joined by his seasoned contemporary Eric Clapton and by such young luminaries as Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, Rob Thomas, and Fher (of famed Mexi-rockers Mana). As an album that caps a rock career spanning more than three decades, SUPERNATURAL is a testament to the stylistic breadth of Carlos' musical world, to his dynamic communicative abilities, and to the fact that rolling stones truly gather no moss. To the sound of punchy horns, Rodney Holmes' double-bass drum kick, and of course, Santana's searing string-bending, "Yaleo" tears it up with abandon. The same night Woodstock #99 went up in flames, an icon of the original 1969 event kept the fire of peace and love burning a continent away. As fans literally raped and pillaged in New York, guitarist Carlos Santana joined hip-hop diva Lauryn Hill in California to play "To Zion," Hill#s song celebrating the birth of her first child and the Creator#s gift of life. Fifty-two-year-old Santana and 24-year-old Hill bridge a generation of musicians who perform music with the conscious aim of transforming their listeners and creating positive change in the world. Despite how corny this idealism may seem by the bonfires of late #90s cynicism, it hasn#t dissuaded artists like Santana and Hill from spreading the spirit that characterized the first Woodstock. Supernatural, Santana#s latest release, captures the artist#s spiritual collaborations with some of the biggest names in today#s music industry. Dave Matthews, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Everlast, and Matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas all make appearances on this album, blending their own styles and genres with the distinctive sound of Santana#s guitar. Supernatural also features singer Eagle-Eye Cherry, Latin music producer K.C. Porter, Rock-en-Espa±ol superstars Mana, and a bluesy call-and-response duet with Eric Clapton#where at least Carlos picks with someone his own age!

The magic of Supernatural can#t be contained within the classic formula of Santana hits such as "Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," or "Oye Como Va." Rather it blends a diversity of musical genres, from Latin to hip hop, without losing its focus. Many of the songs make clear the deep synergy between Latin and African music. "(Da le) Yaleo" opens Supernatural with a powerful Afro-Latino groove and some seriously distorted guitar soloing that carries the tune higher and higher. "Africa Bamba," based on a song by Senegalese group TourT Kunda, starts as a sweet, rural-sounding melody and wraps up with a strong salsa-vamp from Santana#s timbales player, Karl Perazzo. For Santana, these are organic growths springing from the same root. "This whole wave of Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Gloria Estefan is not Spanish or Latin," he told an interviewer. "It#s really African music, whether it#s a bolero, cha-cha, rhumba, or samba. Whatever you call it, it#s still African music. That#s what I play, and that#s what I#ve played from the beginning. I combined it with blues, but it#s always been African music."

WHILE THE FINANCIAL potential of this new release may have caused industry executives to drool with anticipation, Santana approached this album with different intentions. "This album is going to spread a spiritual virus," he told Latin Style magazine. "No matter who you are, all are going to be affected. You are going to remember you are a multidimensional spirit with enormous opportunities which are your choice and yours alone." Working with so many popular artists gives Santana the opportunity to reach out to young people, but he#s not preaching about "living la vida loca." "It#s important to present them more principles, more menus, more opportunities, more dimensions, more possibilities," Santana said. The recent death of Santana#s father#a musician who started Carlos out playing traditional Mexican songs#may have spurred his desire to share wisdom with a new generation. The instrumental "El Farol" (The Lighthouse), which Carlos played at his father#s funeral, is as soft, sensual, and oceanic as the purple-hued mermaid that artist Michael Rios painted for the album#s cover. The song is followed by a short offering of silence that then blooms into "Primavera" (Spring), an inspiring affirmation of new life filled with images of the resurrection found in scripture. But even if you can#t understand the Spanish lyrics, Santana#s passionate guitar solo on this song gets the message across.

Though there are guitarists with more technical flash than Santana, he is one of those rare artists able to convey spiritual experience through music. Even with the considerable talent and charisma of the album#s other stars, it is Santana#s spirituality that carries each song and distinguishes this music from most commercial recordings. Like some of those at Woodstock #99, many fans and performers haven#t learned to respect the force music has to unleash either angels or demons. Supernatural shows that Santana is fully aware of this spiritual dynamic and has made a conscious decision to heal people through music. Márpedig a Santana zenekar új kategóriát teremtett a kritikusok által latin rocknak keresztelt muzsikával. Persze mint minden zenei kategória, ez is kissé megtévesztö egyszerüsítés. A mexikói születésü gitáros-énekes együttesének ritmusszekciójában valóban hemzsegtek a latin-amerikai ütöhangszerek. Amíg ez a fogékonyság inkább ösztönös volt, semmint tudatos, addig zenéjének minduntalan kiütközö latin gyökerei megadták azt a fajta spontaneitást, amellyel például a blues ruházta fel Jimi Hendrix muzsikáját. Az egyre tudatosuló útkeresés egy ideig a dzsessz irányába sodorta. Ez nem is volt halva született vállalkozás, hiszen a fúzió világában a latin rock irányából érkezö Santana talán maradandóbbakat alkotott, mint azok, akik a dzsessz felöl közelítve próbálták tagadhatatlan tehetségüket aprópénzre váltani (Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard - hogy csak néhányat említsek!). Ezen az úton azonban Santana, talán 1976-ban kiadott Amigos címü albumával végül is megrekedt. És ezen az úton kihalt zenéjéböl az az életerö és latin spontaneitás, amely kezdeti sikerének a titka volt.

Új albuma, a Supernatural legnagyobb erénye, hogy, úgy tünik, Santana ismét rátalált régi énjére, anélkül, hogy zenéje a felmelegített leves benyomását keltené. A latin elemek ismét dominánsak, több felvételen spanyolul énekelnek, míg az érzelem és az érzékiség úgy vegyül, hogy az egy pillanatra sem csap át olcsó érzelgösségbe vagy számító erotikába. Ez az album már csak azért sem lehetne szentimentális idögéputazás vissza 1969-be, mert akkor még nem hallhattuk Santana zenéjében a néhai Marvin Gaye hatását (Do You Like the Way), akkor még nem jutott volna eszébe latin melódiákat Bo Diddley ritmikájára alkalmazni (Migra), gitárkísérete a Corazon Espinadon még nem visszhangozhatta volna Eric Clapton emlékezetes Layláját, és harminc évvel ezelött elképzelhetetlen lett volna a bossa nova, a rap és a latin rock olyan szellemes ötvözete, mint a Wishing It Was. Ezek a kombinációk így leírva talán bizarrnak tünnek, de az albumon mindez maga a természetesség. A Supernatural címü albumon nem egy régi dicsöségét erötlenül idézö, korosodó rocksztárt hallunk, hanem egy harminc évet fiatalodott Santanát.
