2002 CD Arista 14737
2002 CS Arista 14737
2002 DP Arista 14737

Featuring the Michelle Branch Sung First Single "Game of Love", "Shaman" also features Guest Appearances from Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, Seal, Macy Gray, P.o.d., Dido, Ozomatli, Musiq and Placido Domingo. This Edition features the Track "Let Me Love You Tonight" which Replaces "Since Supernatural", the Wyclef Jean Produced Track that Appears on the Us Version.

Adhering to the old "if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it" adage, Santana's Shaman sticks with the formula established on 1999's surprise multi-platinum smash Supernatural, by pairing the legendary guitarist with stars from the pop, rock, and R&B talent pool. Like Supernatural, the record tends to smack more of market research than the soulful expression of a rock legend (file Carlos Santana's duet with Nickelback's Chad Kroeger under "most ill-advised pairing in rock history") at times. But in some instances, the duets pay huge dividends, like the breezy first single "The Game of Love" with teen sensation Michelle Branch. And throughout the 16-track affair, Santana's guitar speaks in such fluid, deliberate fashion that you can look past his A&R flaks, and his own desire for a hit single by any means necessary. Hey, it's no crime to desire airplay, and as the label-proffered duet with Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas on "Smooth" proved, inspired sounds can come from crass marketing ploys. Nothing here quite matches the sultry Latino-pop groove of "Smooth" where potential hits are concerned, though several unions do yield creative fruit that is far more exotic. Teaming with L.A. multi-cultural musical mavericks Ozomatli (a 11-member chip off the vintage Santana block), Santana fires off a jabbing fusion of samba and rock on "One of These Days." Macy Gray lends her soulful chirp on the salsa-fied R&B of "Amore," and upstart Citizen Cope pits his languid drawl against Santana's expressive guitar bursts on the meditative "Sideways," which is 4:40 of slow-boiling beauty.

Santana's follow-up to 1999's 11-million selling SUPERNATURAL the album that catapulted the group, and its leader, Carlos Santana, straight back into the top of the charts and earned many Grammy Awards is here! Titled SHAMAN, the album is one of the most highly-anticipated of 2002 and the response to the release from those in the know is uniformly ecstatic.

Like SUPERNATURAL, SHAMAN is jam-packed with many inspired collaborations.

The album features three songs penned by matchbox twenty frontman Rob Thomas (who worked with Santana on Supernatural) and there are several which feature guest vocals by the likes of Michelle Branch who appears on the first single "The Game of Love". The song came in as the number one most-added track at top 40 radio, Mainstream AC and Hot AC upon its impact in the USA in September - and a video, which also features Branch, was shot recently in Chicago. Dido is another of the high-profile singer who appears on SHAMAN along with Chad Kroeger from Nickelback,, P.O.D., Macy Gray, Citizen Cope, Placido Domingo, Alejandro Lerner, Musiq, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Ozomatli, Seal, Michael Shrieve, and producers KC Porter and Kike Santander.

Santana¹s official website also gives more insight into SHAMAN with a posting that said: "There are many great artists, producers, and writers that have helped to create this masterpiece of joy. A few songs like 'Adouma,' 'Foo Foo,' 'Victory Is Won,' and 'Aye Aye Aye,' have been played on the last few Santana tours. All of these songs feature members of the Santana Band."

Other album standouts include ³Victory Is One," an epic instrumental that interweaves threads of rock, Latin pop, and R&B. Like its predecessor, SHAMAN is again (in Carlos Santana's words) a "multi-dimensional" collection, bridging generations and cultures in a musical melting pot of creative partnerships. In typical fashion the album opens with a cover of West African singer Angelique Kidjo's composition "Adouma" (from her 1994 album Aye), given a Santana flavor by co-producer Kike Santander

Key production collaborator this time around was the participation of Clive Davis' successor at Arista served as executive producer. Davis himself co -produced SHAMAN with Carlos Santana.

The magic that informs every note played by Carlos Santana reaches a new intensity with SHAMAN. Billboard have called SHAMAN one of the most hotly anticipated releases of 2002 something the publication does not say lightly and it comes just in time for the festive season, so don¹t miss out!

Carlos Santana is one of a handful of rock guitarists whose distinctive playing can be recognized in one or two notes. After years of touring as a Woodstock-era road warrior, Santana was thrust back into the public spotlight in 1999, thanks to the runaway success of "Supernatural," the album he recorded with a raft of mainstream pop stars. Touring in advance of another pop-oriented CD, "Shaman," Santana and his bandmates, who played the Tweeter Center Friday night, had the challenging task of merging the venerable jazz and Latin-inflected sound of their older material with the more concise and conventional pop of the newer tunes.

Santana bridged this gap with the aid of a first-rate, multicultural band of versatile veterans who were as comfortable stretching out on a '60s anthem like "Jingo" as they were cranking out radio hits such as "Smooth." The guest vocalists who were so prominent on "Supernatural" were hardly missed, thanks to the group's two versatile and charismatic frontmen, Tony Lindsay and Andy Vargas. Rather than attempting to upstage each other, these vocalists worked beautifully as a team, alternating lines on many songs, and keeping both their bandmates and the large, enthusiastic audience energized.

In addition to a hefty chunk of material from "Supernatural," the band played a handful of tunes from "Shaman," which seems to follow in the mainstream groove paved on "Supernatural." The new songs were difficult to assess, because the Tweeter's notorious acoustics made deciphering their lyrics all but impossible.

No Santana band would be complete without a line of percussionists, and the current lineup is one of the strongest in the band's history, comprising trap drummer Dennis Chambers, timbales player Karl Perazzo and Raul Rekow, who has been with the band almost continuously for a quarter century, on congas. Two virtuoso players, keyboardist Chester Thompson and six-string bassist Benny Rietveld, used their jazz chops to inject texture and melodic complexity into the music. For this tour, the band has been augmented by rhythm guitarist Myron Dove and two horn players, trumpeter Bill Ortiz and trombonist Jeff Cressman.

As good as the rest of the band was, it was still Santana himself that the audience had come to hear, and he remains an astounding soloist, wringing emotion out of every note with an inimitable blend of passion, creativity and flawless technique. Although Santana delivered the requisite firepower on pieces such as "Oye Como Va," some of the evening's most memorable moments were quiet ones, as the guitarist provided a spare introduction on classical guitar for "Maria, Maria," or played slow, stately melody lines on his solid body electric. A master musician, Santana remains in top form, and his enthusiastic fans at Friday's show savored each of the myriad notes he played.

A Shaman titkai

Három év telt el Carlos Santana kilencszeres Grammy díjas Supernatural lemezének megjelenése óta, míg 2002 októberében végre megérkezett a várva várt folytatás.

Visszahullva a porba azonban gyakorlatias kérdésekkel találjuk szemben magunkat.

A slágerlisták változásai is hidegen hagynak. Igazán érdekes, amit Santana a megfelelo vendégzenészek kiválasztásáról mesélt: ”Mindig a dalok döntik el, kivel dolgozom együtt, kivel tudnám életre kelteni oket. Olyan ez, mint Hamupipokét keresni egy üvegtopánkával.”

A tévé és rádióadók musorán egyre gyakrabban szereplo ”The Game of Love” címu melódiára külön is kitért. Ebben a nótában partnere az ígéretes fiatal tehetség, a csinos Michelle Branch.

”Mr. Clive Davis-nek, a produceremnek ajánlotta ot valaki. Hogyan is NE lehetne a tisztaságot felfedezni valakiben, aki 19 éves?

Szeretem a Rage Against the Machine-t és a Metallica-t is.

A dalok a barátságnál is fontosabbak.

”A dolgok változnak. A személyünk valójában lényegtelen.

A jó öreg Carlos természetesen erre a feltevésre is pozitívan reagált:

”Pontosan ezt terveztem! A közös munka után egyenesen a Közel-Keletre utazom, és ott adok koncertet. Nyitott szívvel látogatok az arabok földjére nem amerikai zászlóval. Remélem sikerül legalább részben feloldani a kölcsönös gyulöletet. Mind a fénybol jöttünk, viselkedjünk is ehhez mérten.

To say that guitar guru Carlos Santana got a huge career boost from Supernatural, his 1999 album of genre-spanning collaborations, is an understatement: The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer reached a whole new audience with the multiplatinum-selling, Grammy-laden album, which paired him with Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews, Wyclef Jean, and the like. Given Supernatural's magnetic charm, it's no surprise that Santana applies a similar formula to his much-anticipated follow-up. And while the going isn't always "Smooth," this shaman pulls it off. Even with a somewhat more uneven guest list, Shaman dazzles with tantalizing moments. "Feels like Fire," which sets Santana's hypnotic playing against the almost hymnlike vocals of Dido, is nothing short of stunning, and the easygoing, horn-pumped "The Game of Love," with teen rocker Michelle Branch, suggests a South of the Border Sheryl Crow. Likewise, Seal's slithery singing perfectly matches the soulful lines that Santana unspools for "You Are My Kind." The chemistry is less successful when the guitarist joins forces with the new generation of hard rockers: He all but disappears amid the bluster of P.O.D.'s "America," while Nickelback's Chad Kroeger proves entirely unsympathetic on the grandiose "Why Don't You and I?" Those rough patches, however, are offset by a passel of sexy mid-tempo tracks, such as the serpentine "Amore (Sexo)," which boasts one of Macy Gray's typically showstopping vocal turns. Equally interesting are the tunes that delve into Santana's Latin heritage, from the light and airy "Hoy Es Adios," with vocals by Alejandro Lerner, to the tough-talking "One of These Days," on which he's joined by the members of Ozomatli. Once again, this six-string sage proves his mettle at spell-casting, dreamweaving, and, above all, hit-making.

Singers Answer the Call from Santana the Shaman

NEW YORK (Reuters) - When the call comes from Carlos Santana, what singer could resist?

Not Musiq, Seal, Michelle Branch or Macy Gray.

Following the phenomenal 25 million sales of his Grammy-winning 1999 album "Supernatural," which featured the Latino guitar great playing with the likes of Dave Matthews and Lauryn Hill, Santana's new disc "Shaman" has tracks showcasing the aforementioned singers, as well as Dido, P.O.D., Chad Kroeger, Citizen Cope and others.

In addition to the new Arista recording, which comes out on Oct 22, Sony's Columbia/Legacy label is releasing a two disc retrospective of his work, "The Essential Santana" on the same day. It includes classics such as "Evil Ways," "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va."

Santana, in New York to promote the albums and appear on "Live by Request" on the A&E cable TV network on Friday (Oct 18) told Reuters the whole process had a mystical quality.

"A lot happened on 'Supernatural' and 'Shaman,' a kind of inner synchronicity, like electricity, like when you think of someone long enough and they suddenly call," he said.

"It is the same principle. Eric Clapton and Dave Matthews told me the same thing, that before (producer) Clive (Davis) called, they had been hearing Santana music all the time."

The key, he said, is to concentrate on the songs. "They are like glass slippers and then we go out to find a Cinderella, to fill them."

One unlikely singer to duet with Santana is tenor Placido Domingo. But even he does on "Shaman," in a meeting of opera and rock on a song called "Novus."

"Placido Domingo, I have admired his spirit for a long time, it was only a matter of time before I selected a song for him.

"Placido is very gracious and childlike. And, just like I learned from Mr. John Lee Hooker or Wayne Shorter, he is not afraid to go outside the frame. Too many people have a low ceiling and he is not like that, he loves music."

Other people Santana would love to work with are Tina Turner and several African musicians, "as long as they are honest. The opposite of that is shallow and we don't want to go there," he said.

As for playing his hits live on television, the Mexican-born guitarist has no qualms about rehearsing for "Live by Request" which is being broadcast live to Latin America as well as North America on Friday evening. "Shirley MacLaine once said 'muscles have memories,' and you don't forget songs."

Santana's appearance is the latest in A&E's "Live by Request" series, which won an Emmy for the 1996 Tony Bennett telecast. Since then, it has featured such performers as David Bowie, Neil Diamond, James Taylor and Reba McEntire.
