Marathon marked the addition of keyboard player Alan Pasqua and singer Greg Walker's replacement by singer/guitarist Alex Ligertwood in the Santana lineup. Otherwise, the album was notable for consisting entirely of band-written material, although those songs were in the established R&B/rock style evolved on albums like Amigos, Festival, and Inner Secrets. The formula seemed to be wearing thin by now, however, as, even with a Top 40 hit in "You Know That I Love You" (#35), Marathon became the first Santana album to fall below the 500, 000-sales mark necessary for gold record certification. (It has since made the mark.)

Santana is following the trend of melding various influences into a hybrid sound rather than isolating them. Instead of having a cool blues, a red hot rocker, a slick jazz piece and a harmonic pop number, Santana is incorporating all of these styles into their latest effort. For example, "All I Ever Wanted," a hard-driving rocker, is preceded by "You Know I Love You," a tune that is so MOR it makes one ask if it's really Carlos Santana behind those saccharin sweet ooh's and aah's. It is not until halfway through the second side that the trademark screaming guitar and Latin flavor which has come to symbolize Santana's music begins to show up. It seems as though Santana, like so many others of late, is trying to stretch out and experiment with the artistry they have developed over the years. Hopefully, they won't spread themselves too thin.
