ROLLING STONE ALBUM GUIDE : ***

"...this music is rock; loud and insistent, it depends on monochord drones and simple modes for its structure and on sheer screaming force for much of its effect..."

Rolling Stone 8/2/73, p.47

A fiercer confrontation than the title would suggest, this jazz fusion album (recorded with Mahavishnu and John McLaughlin) contains excellent versions of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" and "Naima," plus a couple of McLaughlin originals. It's really more McLaughlin's show, but the contrast in guitar styles is fascinating.

A duo album by John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana, this recording presents the two guitarists attempting jazz-fusion versions of the work of John Coltrane and McLaughlin compositions. Santana's fire is dampened somewhat by the solemn proceedings, but his commercial power held: this was the sixth straight Santana-related album to go gold, but the first to miss the Top Ten.
