...Carlos need never play another note to rank as one of the most satisfying beautiful players of his instrument... charming and moving melodic lines as the music swells and climaxes to swell again...

Rolling Stone (12/7/72, pg. 62)

"...The playing was immediately looser....A beautifully fluid piece of work, this was as far as most fans were prepared to go, never to return..."

Q Magazine (5/00, p.131) - 4 stars out of 5

Drawing on rock, salsa and jazz, Santana recorded one imaginative, unpredictable gem after another in the 1970s. But Caravanserai is daring even by Santana's high standards. Carlos Santana was obviously very hip to jazz-fusion — something the innovative guitarist provides a generous dose of on the largely instrumental Caravanserai. Whether its approach is jazz-rock or simply rock, this album is consistently inspired and quite adventurous. Full of heartfelt, introspective guitar solos, it lacks the immediacy of Santana or Abraxas. Like the type of jazz that influenced it, this pearl (which marked the beginning of keyboardist/composer Tom Coster's highly benefical membership in the band) requires a number of listenings in order to be absorbed and fully appreciated. But make no mistake: this is one of Santana's finest accomplishments.

Alex Henderson, All-Music Guide

Carlos and the Santana band made their name on the strength of their first three albums. Such was the power and quality of the music, but Caravanserai surmounted that and is arguably the best Santana has ever produced, representing also Santana's first deviation into the dreamy, mystical, jazzy sounds. The "spirit of creativity" must have descended on Earth to infuse the Santana band with supernatural musicianship when this album was made...then departed back to heaven, for such work is rarely seen, rarely repeated. To this day the music remains fresh, original, spiritual. Such is the quality of this album, that it was once described as music for musicians. Every single track a masterpiece, even the cover art is mystical. The album retains a linear and uniform feel throughout as the tracks merge smoothly into each other. Intensity gradually builds up, then letting go in cycles of sheer musical ecstasy. "Stone flower" (track 8), is authored by none other than Antonio Carlos Jobim, need we say more? An absolute must to anyone's collection; this album is an all-time classic of epic proportions. Dare say Carlos will never again achieve this level transcendental spirituality in his music, judging by what followed and his latter works. Caravanserai was released in 1972 and consists of ten tracks. Some people are of the opinion that this album has major personnel changes, hence the new musical direction into the jazzy sounds. Not so! The original cast is still there, Chepito, Rolie, Shrieve, etc. There are however some personnel changes from track to track, and surprisingly the feel of the music is pleasantly well balanced. Each song complements the other. Follow these instructions: Place CD in player, unplug the telephone, lights down low, incense sticks smoking, sit back in armchair with favorite beverage, volume up high.....and hit the play button for a soul-lifting ride into heaven. Then do it again!

In the solo guitarist history the Rock and Roll never had someone special in practice like Carlos Santana. I had a chance to ear Jimi Hendrix, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Frampton, George Harrison and others guitarist on records. But nobody like this "mariachi's son" on his perfect masterpiece: "Caravanserai". Unbelieveable. That's why you must listen this delicious afro-caribean, latin, jazz, rock and middle east ryhtym fussion. This musical art was made by Santana lookin for faith, spiritually and peace and that´s what you'll be found listening this energetic record. This was the last recording from the original Santana's Band: Carlos Santana (lead guitar and vocals), Gregg Rollie (organ and vocals), Neal Schon (guitarist), José "Chepito" Areas (timbales), Mike Schrieve (drums), Doug Rauch (bass), James "Mingo" Lewis (congas), Armando Peraza (percussion), Tom Rutley (acoustic bass) and Wendy Hass (piano). If you've gonna out of this world, don't forget "Caravanserai" to listen everywhere you are and enjoy the fighting guitars on "Song of the Wind" betwen Carlos Santana (teacher) and (his disciple) Neal Schon, who months later former Journey with Rollie. "Caravanserai" is for me the introduction to other and special musical universe and I listened many dozen times this magical record since 1974 (the first time) in southern California around the orange, grapefruit, lemon, peach and avocado trees.

All the Love of the Universe

Oo, oo, do...
New thoughts
Will purify my mind
and clean my body
New lives
will fall together like an endless story

All the love of the universe
will be shared by all that's living

And I don't really care
about tomorrow
Today
is all I really need to find the answers

I'll find the constant flow
of all the harmony

Everybody needs a helpin' hand
Everybody needs a helpin' hand

Future Primitive

(Instrumental)

Stone Flower

What's that sound I hear coming from the ground
that' going 'round and 'round I can feel it pull me down
On my knees tears of joy have come to me
As the flower sounds made it plain to see

that this world is a perfect place to live
there is a warm soft wind blowing 'round me just to give
all the leaves such a haunting melody
that forever will be a part of me

Just like a ship out on the sea
floating alone no one around me or beyond me
the sun is on me

then suddenly I felt a kiss out of the breeze
that did caress me and posess me
oh it astounds me

All around there's a feeling in the air
that with the grace of time we'll be getting closer there
but day by day I can see they walk away
and I wonder, Lord will they ever know

that this world is a perfect place to live?
Just look into your heart, find the love that's there to give
Realize that the secret is to share
