By the release of Amigos, the Santana band's seventh album, only Carlos Santana and David Brown remained from the band that conquered Woodstock, and only Carlos had been in the band continuously since. Meanwhile, the group had made some effort to arrest its commercial slide, hiring an outside producer, David Rubinson, and taking a tighter, more uptempo, and more vocal approach to its music. The overt jazz influences were replaced by strains of R&B/funk and Mexican folk music. The result was an album more dynamic than any since Santana III in 1971. "Let It Shine" (#77), an R&B-tinged tune, became the group's first chart single in four years, and the album returned Santana to Top Ten status.

Mehr als drei Jahrzehnte dauert sie nun schon an, die zwar wechselhafte, aber an Highlights überreiche Karriere des Carlos Santana. Vom taufrischen, von wirbeliger Percussion aufgemischten Latin-Rock der Woodstock-Ära à la "Jingo" oder "Abraxas", über Jazz-Exkursionen und Gastspiele für Blues-Veteran John Lee Hooker, bis zu seinem jüngsten 99er Album Supernatural. Trotz mancher esoterischer Abschweifungen blieb seine charakteristische Note stets unverkennbar: Der klare, singende, langgezogene Saiten-Sound (des mit Preisen und Ehrungen überschütteten Gitarristen) ebenso wie seine selbst kreierte, feurige Synthese aus den Stilmitteln des Rock, des Blues, und, als auffälligstes Feature, der komplexen afro-kubanischen Latino-Rhythmik. Obwohl mittlerweile fast alle Gründungsmitglieder ihren Hut genommen hatten, markierte das siebte Santana-Album 1976 eine bewußte Rückbesinnung auf den kompakteren Sound der Anfangsjahre: Improvisierende Jazz-Einflüsse traten weit in den Hintergrund, die wieder stärker auf den Gesang fokussierten Songs wiesen mehr Dynamik auf; mit "Let It Shine" konnten Santana nach Jahren der Abwesenheit sogar wieder mal in den US-Single-Charts punkten. Zu den Highlights des Albums wie des Santana-Kanons zählen vor allem das hinreißende "Dance Sister Dance (Baila Mi Hermania)" und das Instrumental "Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile)", eins von Carlos Santanas solistischen Kabinettstücken, aus einer schwebend-schwerelosen Stimmung zum furios dynamischen Finale gesteigert. Amigos ist glasklar zu den sechs oder acht Top-Favoriten einer fundierten Santana-Kollektion zu zählen.
