2000 CD EMI 25415

Maggie Reilly's most recent release is entitled Starcrossed (EMI Electrola (Germany) 7243 5 25415 2 2, 2000). In her solo career that followed a successful association with Mike Oldfield ("Moonlight Shadow," etc.), Reilly has already released three albums, a range of singles and a best of compilation. Her solo career began with Echoes (1992) and was immediately followed up by Midnight Sun (1993). After a break, Elena (1997) emerged. The Best Of compilation There And Back Again actually features a new recording of "Moonlight Shadow." Reilly's latest album is a natural development of the artist's adult alternative contemporary singing songwriting style.

Interestingly Maggie Reilly's albums are rarely domestically released either in the Americas or United Kingdom. Originally from Scotland, she sings in English and her music, like Miriam Stockley's, has broad appeal but the German community seems to have recognised her talent more than other territories. This latest release features twelve mostly easy rocking tracks featuring soaring vocals with additional layers contributing to the textures achieved. A bevy of guest artists are listed as contributing to the recordings. They include: Nico Ramsden (guitars), Fergus Durrant (percussion) Danny Schogger (keyboards), Charlie Dore (additional backing vocals), Grant Mitchell (bass and drum programming), Chris Rea (slide guitar), Churcho Merchan (guitars, bass, backing vocals), Stuart Mackillop (keyboards), Blair Mackichan (addional backing vocals), Guy Pratt (bass), Miles Bould (drums), and Adam Drake (guitars).

Clearly the most catchy track of the album is "When It's Over" with its obvious single potential. Lush instrumentals perfectly compliment Maggie's stunning lead and additional layers of backing vocals. The ballad "Always You" is, by stark contrast, a lovely ballad, lightly instrumented with simply stunning vocals; tribal sounding layers in the chorus are most reminscent of Miriam Stockley's style. "I Think It's Gonna Rain" is sung totally a capella and is a testament to the artist's virtuousity and vocal maturity.

Light rocking tracks dominate the balance of the album's set list. "Always You" blends lovely lead vocals with lush arrangements and additional vocal layers while electronics dominate arrangements in "Now" to give it a dance flavour. "Replay" is an evocative, rock-style ballad with bluesy verses contrasted by choruses having a highly accessible pop flavour. We quite enjoyed "Talking To Myself" and "Changes" with their contrasting textures spanning dance electronica, light rock and ballad styles and soaring lead vocals balanced with layers of backing harmonies. The album concludes with the upbeat track "Memories" which, like many of those that precede it balancing lovely lead vocals with backing layers of harmony vocals and lovely arrangements; percussion is most notable in the closing track.

The compact disc is accompanied by a lovely booklet with full size and thumbnail photos of the arist. Lyrics for the track "Adelena" are included but the others have been omitted. You can read further reviews and order Maggie Reilly's Starcrossed album from amazon.com at a reasonable price here. Certainly worth a transatlantic journey, this wonderful Maggie Reilly album, just like those that precede it, is a must listen!

Mike Oldfield was the one who initially put Maggie Reilly's wonderful oprano voice onto the road of success when she sang the hit "Moonlight Shadow". Some excellent songwriters literally wrote songs made to measure for Maggie moving her close to the stars. Bright and glittering tracks like Adelena, Always You and Replay bring across a feeling of sublimity and beauty. Maggie's voice emanates maturity and dignity, turning the ballads into hymns to life, the mid tempo tracks are floating timelessly through Pop mainstream realms. The instrumentatopn is densley atmospheric, only now and then revealing a bit of the Oldfield school. Maggie Reilly is happy with the result of "Starcrossed"; "Thanks to producer Ren Swan the whole album has a homogenous sound."

Pop Star Maggie Reilly Sparkles With A New Album

Maggie Reilly is back. With a concentrated charge of Pop from her new album "Starcrossed" the Scotswoman climbs back in the ring. Ingolf Rosendahl spoke to the singer/songwriter when she was staying in a London studio.

Question: How stingy are the Scottish really?
MR: We are not stingy. It's merely an invention of the English. They also say the Irish are stupid.

Q: You recorded a new album. What is the difference between Starcrossed and the earlier records?
MR: There are no big differences. It is a development. I didn't mean to change much, I only wrote some new songs.

Q: Some of them are co-productions with other authors like Kit Haine and Charlie Dore (Celine Dion, Tina Turner). Do your songs always come into being like this?
MR: It somehow develops automatically. You meet and decide to write a song together. It's often very interesting and also a lot of fun…

Q: …or ends up as intense like "Adelena". What is the story behind this song?
MR: A friend of mine has an autistic daughter. It was horrible for him to realise that she couldn't communicate with her environment. But when she was nine or ten years old she recognised him and called him daddy. It was a wonderful moment.

Q:…****** to sing "Moonlight Shadow". Aren't you a bit proud of that?
MR: I am aware that this co-operation has been very successful and I enjoyed it a lot. But it doesn't mean that I have to continue this until the end of my days. People want to change. Nowadays Mike is doing what he wants and I am doing my thing. How strange would the world be if we wouldn't change.

Q: What makes a Pop song perfect to you?
MR: It depends on what somebody associates with a song, the things that move him while listening to it. Not everything I write is going to be released. Some does not fit into the context and some I am not satisfied with.

Q: Are you exercising your voice?
MR: No.

Q: Do you sing in the bathroom in the morning?
MR: I am singing always and everywhere like most people.

Q: What do you think about the new won independence of your country?
MR: I like it. But I am not able to contribute to it, I am living with my 14 year old son in London.

Q: Sean Connery does not live in Scotland either but he wants the independence…
MR: He isn't a real leader. What sense does that make: A Scottish nationalist who doesn't live in Scotland since ages? I guess he just likes the idea.

Q: Someone who is looking for you in the Internet finds little but more frequently comes across Maggie Simpson. Are you hiding?
MR: A friend in Glasgow is currently working on my homepage. Once it is ready you'll have more information. But I don't want to reveal every little detail of my life. It is important to me that the things that are said about me are really the truth. You can only achieve that when you are in control yourself.

REUNION

Halos roam
In the stars tonight
Angels guide you home
With the silver light
A distant silhouette
The haze begins to clear
I feel you throwing me
To the beat of my heart
And I hear your voice through the distance
Calling my name
And do you hear the answer from the still of my soul
Wasted until this day of reunion
Seven years ago
I watched you leave
How could you know the vamp
The time won't veer
We walk down separate ways
Toward those steps we missed
We were always meant for these
Moments from now
And I hear a voice through the distance
Calling my name
And do you hear the answer from the still of my soul
Wasted until this day of reunion
And I hear a voice through the distance
And I hear your voice through the distance
Calling my name
And do you hear the answer from the still of my soul
Wasted until this day of reunion
We come and go
To the beat of a heart
To the beat of my soul
We come and go
We come and go
To the beat of my heart
We come and go
(We come and go)
To the beat of my soul
(We come and go)
(We come and go)
I hear your voice in the distance
Calling me, calling
(We come and go)
(We come and go)
I hear your voice in the distance
Calling me, calling me
(We come and go)
(We come and go)
I hear your voice calling out my name
Calling out my name
We come and go
We come and go
We come and go

STOLEN HEART

I was always cool and carefree with my heart
And you could see that it was open from the start
There was never any reason to beware
Me and Miss Red Riding Hood, we made a perfect pair

You were looking for diversion of the kind
Just a little fun until you change your mind
Such a minus sometime loved you from the first
It only took one word to make the bubble burst

Gonna change the lives
Gonna change my number
I return your letters
Better that you know
That you can run around, just break it
And you've got to learn
And I won't let you sleep at night
Until you can return my stolen heart

I was always taught to turn the other cheek
Still you rob me blind and now I've got to speak
You crept in because I looked the other way
And now I've learnt my lesson starting from today

Gonna change the lives
Gonna change my number
I'll return your letters
Better that you know
That you can run around, just steal it
Know the things you left
And I won't let you sleep at night
Until you bring it back, my stolen heart

Gonna change the lives
Gonna change my number
I return your letters
Better that you know
That you can run around, just break it
And you've got to learn
And I won't let you sleep at night
Until you can return my stolen heart

Gonna change the lives
Bring it back, bring it back now
Gonna change my number
My stolen heart

ADELENA

No Disney World,
No world of Wonder.
I wonder what she's thinking.
This special girl,
grows beautiful.
Inside a world thats shrinking ..

Goodnight little precious,
we can never tell
if you feel these hopefull kisses,
there inside you'r shell.
Endless conversations,
the voices never heard ..

Talk Talk Talk the empty words ..

Adelena Adelena

Such innocence
in this isolation
can never be defined
such present tense ..
there's no past or future
for a secret child.

Endless conversations,
the voices never heard,
Talk talk talk the empty words
Adelena, Adelena

Sometimes we cry
she doesnt speak that language
She doesnt sing that song.
One day we'll die ..
But will she feel the distance ?
Or will she know we're gone ?
She wouldnt turn back,
we try to teach her,
wouldnt turn round,
we just can't reach her,
wouldnt turn round,
Alien Creature,
I take her in my arms
and this is what she feels...

WHEN IT'S OVER

(No world of love)
Did it feel like a real thing
Was it only a dream
Or a gift made in heaven
Never quite what it seems
Has a magic confided
Are we drifting in parts
Have we lost the connection
That was there from the start
Don't you know that you threaten me
So bad
When it's over, it's over
But it takes time to realize
Recognize that it's over
And time to say 'Goodbye'
Was it just an illusion
Were you laying apart
Now you remain just fading
All you took was my heart
But it felt like a real thing
How could it be a dream
I'm alone with the memory
Never quite what it seems
Will you know that you threaten me
So wrong
When it's over, it's over
It just takes time to realize
Recognize that it's over
And time to say 'Goodbye'
I stood by the ocean, it was beautiful
(No world of love)
I thought of the wonder in your eyes
(No world of love)
Remember the way you used to look at me
(No world of love)
And ... tears will up inside
Don't you know that you threaten me
So wrong
Have you known that you threaten me
For so long
When it's over, it's over
But it takes time to realize
Recognize that it's over
It's time to say
When it's over, it's over
(When it's over, it's over)
You just need to realize
(I just need to realize)
Say it's over
Recognize that it's over
(Goodbye)
It's time to say 'Goodbye'
When it's over it's over
(I need to realize)
But it takes time to realize
Recognize that it's over
(And say goodbye)
It's time to say
(Say goodbye...)
When it's over it's over
(You need to know)
(I just need to realize)

HALFLIGHT

I am voiceless, I am numb
I am broken up inside
Can't see what I have begun
But the gulf is much too wide

You call to me from somewhere in the half-light
And I hear you speak my name

I don't know what to believe
I can't see which way to turn
It was easy to deceive
Though my bridges I had burnt

You whisper to me from out there in the silent night
And I hear you call my name

Call out to me from out there in the half-light
And I hear you call my name

I am voiceless, I am numb
I am broken up inside
Don't know what I have begun
The gulf is much too wide

You call to me somewhere in the cold, cold night
And I hear you speak my name

You cry to me from somewhere in the half-light
And I hear you speak my name

Whisper to me from somewhere in the cold, cold night
You cried and you called my name

You call my name
You call my name

ALWAYS YOU (ALBUM EDIT)

When we were children
You and me, the pack
When I tried to hide in ...
You'd come running back
Swimming in a river
I fell into the sand
And I thought I dreamt
But you held out your hand
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
Remember schooldays
I found this photograph
That innocent look on your smiling face
Designed to make me laugh
And if my heart was broken
By some young cavalier
When I cried all night
You would dry my tears
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
I couldn't see you I was looking out too far
I opened up my eyes and all time there you are
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you
'Cause it was always you, always you
And when the night was cold and I needed a shoulder
It was always you

NOW

Angel from amber
Bringing me our precious love
And I am falling ...
But I don't mind, now I know
It's so easy to let go

Every day's a new beginning
Every says you'll be all around
All I want you see with you
Right now

(Angel)
(Right now)

My angel, he never knew
That everything I lost I find in you
And our future holds no fear
You've blown it all away
Because it's easy when you say

Every day's a new beginning
Every says you'll be all around
All I want you see with you
Right now

REPLAY

Somewhere there in the back of my mind is a memory
I can see if I only close my eyes
Like a picture show long ago, I'm there in a reverie
Like a child my imagination flies
Illusion so clear
Feels like your heat

Lay that night when the stars ignite in the galaxy
I'm laying here awake
And then I go right back to the blue and black of the jealousy
I remember, I remember my mistakes
Like a refrain
It's called in my brain

Run it back I replay
Roll it back I replay
Play it back
That moment in time

Run it back I replay
Roll it back I replay
Play it back
That seen in my mind

Run it back
Roll it back

I can see your face, but I can't embrace the photograph
And it's crazy to pretend
And when I had my choice
And I heard my voice saying 'au revoir'
I was certain, now it's hard to comprehend
Knowing inside
I can't turn the time

Run it back I replay
Roll it back I replay
Play it back
That moment in time

Here in my mind
It's stripped from my heart
My world falls apart

Run it back
As my world falls
Roll it back
Falls

That moment in time
That seen in my mind
It's stripped from my heart
My world falls apart
That moment in time
Here in my mind
It's stripped from my heart
I reply, I reply

I THINK IT'S GONNA RAIN

Broken windows and empty hallways
Pale dead moon in a sky streaked with grey
Human kindness overflowing
And I think it's gonna rain today

Scarecrows dressed in latest styles
With frozen smiles to keep love away
Human kindness overflowing
And I think it's gonna rain today

Lonely, lonely
Tin can at my feet
Think I'll kick it down the street
That's the way you treat a friend

Bright before me the signs implore me
Help the needy and show them the way
Human kindness overflowing
And I think it's gonna rain today

Lonely, oh so lonely
Tin can at my feet
Think I'll kick it down the street
That's the way you treat a friend

Bright before me the signs implore me
Help the needy and show them the way
Human kindness overflowing
And I think it's gonna rain today

Human kindness, it's overflowing
And I think it's gonna rain today

TALKING TO MYSELF

I hear voices in my head,
Shut up!
But they keep on saying,
"You're the one who cries in bed"
Shup up! Shup up!

While the Radio plays
sad and lonely songs
you only hurtin now
for the rules you made.

I don't want to hear that now,
Shup up!

I was almost healing,
He's the proud one anyhow,
Shut up!

As he got no feelings

I can't sleep at night,
I'm keeping watching him,
though I cant think why ..

It's a revelation,
Talking to myself.
What a conversation,
talking to myself.

Who can tell you
how much is enough?

When you lost the reason,

Turning from the one
you long to touch ?
 Like your heart is freezing.
There's no chance
to find the answer,

nothing there's only
Echoes Echoes Echoes ..

Its a revelation
talking to myself
What a conversation
talking to myself
I don't need translation,
Me, I know what it means.

Only me
No you and me.
Only I know what I'm missing
Only me
No you and me,
if only I had stopped to listen
Only me
No you and me.
Only I know what I'm missing
Only me
No you and me.
If only I had stopped ..

Its a revelation
talking to myself
(Whatever anybody tells you..)
What a conversation
talking to myself
I don't need translation,
Me, I know what it means.
(Will she ever listen?)
(I know what I means)
(Talking to myself..)

CHANGES

Dawn in a distant city
I'm wondering where you are today
Here in my waken dreams
So far away

Lovers walk hand in hand
Under an early morning sky
Reminding me where we've been
Sometime gone by

The miles we covered hard to hard
The days we drifted far apart

And we're still travelling through these changes
I'm getting closer to the truth
No matter where I go
Every road leads back to you

Whenever you think of me
Remember when you're the one who's gone
That I'll be the one to say
Don't stray too long

Soon we're coming around again
And do beginning from a different end

Still I'm ravelling through these changes
I'm getting closer to the truth
No matter where I go
Every road leads back to you, back to you, back to you

And in some other place in time
Were we star-crossed lovers
Given an other chance to find
You always let me through these changes, oh, changes

Through these changes
I'm getting closer to the truth
No matter where I go
Every road leads back to you, back to you

Through these changes
Every road leads back to you, back to you
No matter, no matter, no matter where I go
Every road leads back to you

Still ravelling, travelling through these changes
I'm getting closer to the truth
Back to you, back to you
Oh, no matter where I go
Every road leads back to you

Through these changes
I'm getting closer to the truth
And wondering where you are today
No matter where I go
Every road leads back to you

MEMORIES

(Memories)
(Memories)

Falling through the space between our dreams
Absence is a way to let us know
And never understand what leaving means
But some things have to break and let it go

Memories won't let you run and hide
They always pull you back
Memories won't let you run away

I've been wondering how long it takes
To find forgiveness in a heart
Or if we ever learn from my mistakes
We wind in from the end back to the start

Memories won't let you run and hide
They always pull you back
Memories won't let you run away

We're close
Horizon, take another leap of faith
Just hope our wings don't melt away
It's time for us to turn our faces to the sun
Look into her bright ...

Memories won't let you run and hide
They always pull you back
Memories won't let you run away

Memories won't let you run and hide
They always find you out
Memories won't let you run away

Memories won't let you run and hide
They always pull you back
