Fearless, eclectic, and defiantly messy, Prince's Sign O' the Times falls into the tradition of tremendous, chaotic double albums like The Beatles, Exile on Main St., and London Calling — albums that are fantastic because of their overreach, their great sprawl. Prince shows nearly all of his cards here, from bare-bones electro-funk and smooth soul to pseudo-psychedelic pop and crunching hard rock, touching on gospel, blues, and folk along the way. This was the first album Prince recorded without the Revolution since 1982's 1999 (the band does appear on the in-concert rave-up, "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night"), and he sounds liberating, diving into territory merely suggested on Around the World in a Day and Parade. While the music overflows with generous spirit, these are among the most cryptic, insular songs he's ever written. Many songs are left over from the aborted triple album Crystal Ball and the abandoned Camille project, a Prince alter-ego personified by scarily sped-up tapes on "If I Was Your Girlfriend," the most disarming and bleak psycho-sexual song Prince ever wrote, as well as the equally chilling "Strange Relationship." These fraying relationships echo in the social chaos Prince writes about throughout the album. Apocalyptic imagery of drugs, bombs, empty sex, abandoned babies and mothers, and AIDS pop up again and again, yet he balances the despair with hope, whether it's God, love, or just having a good time. In its own roundabout way, Sign O' the Times is the sound of the late '80s — it's the sound of the good times collapsing and how all that doubt and fear can be ignored if you just dance those problems away.

Frequent Prince collaborator Susan Rogers says Sundays had a profound effect on the artist. He'd come up with his most contemplative songs. It was on such a quiet Sunday that Prince came up with one of his best-loved and most far-reaching songs, "Sign O' the Times." Working with programmer Todd Harriman, Prince created almost all of the music using the groundbreaking Fairlight Synthesizer. The social commentary tone of the lyrics resonated with the public, with the single parking at number one R&B for three weeks and peaking at number three pop in the spring of 1987. The Sign O' the Times album went platinum and included the singles "If I Were Your Girlfriend," the Top Ten R&B/number two pop duet with Sheena Easton "U Got the Look," and "Hot Thing." "Sign O' the Times" marked a welcomed return to a rawer sound for Prince.

It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, when it was released, some of the music in oh-so-'80s synths sounds a bit dated. Yet this two-CD set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, "If I Was Your Girlfriend," and the thunderous "The Cross," Prince proves why the hype was justified.

Kissing off the Revolution to return to one-man-band status (with a little help from his friends), Prince has made a strangely seductive album with Sign `O The Times. If Purple Rain placed him in the unenviable task of having to play top-this-a task at which he was to fail with Around The world In A Day and Parade, both strained from the effort-this new one succeeds in its simplicity and relaxed good-naturedness. Granted, the two-record set yields a lot of filler, probably enough to discard half and turn this into a superb single disc. But what's left is both experimental and familiar enough to satisfy both those who crave Purple Rain: The Sequel and those who would settle for nothing less than a brand new direction with each release. Largely, Sign `O' The Times is a minimalist effort instrumentally and predictable lyrically-'cept for maybe the sanity-before-it's-too-late title track-but it's also a continuous smorgasbord of unearthly delights. It's funky and soulful, it rocks the house and rocks the joint, it's sweet `n' sour, jazzy and folky, Princedelic and oddly grounded in tradition. To some, Prince's lack of formal innovation here could spell laziness. To others it might seem the calm before a Royal Purple storm. And then again it could just be a Sign `O' The Times.
