Anyone who couldn't see that Robert Plant was returning back to his bombastic Zeppelin roots on his 1988 release, NOW & ZEN, definitely got the hint on his fifth solo release two years later, MANIC NIRVANA. Sonically, the album was Plant's most rock-based solo release yet, with weighty guitar riffs serving as the basis for many of the songs.

While there's no mistaking MANIC NIRVANA for a Zep album (the production is a lot cleaner here than on their past classics), it was a welcome return back to the type of music that made a name for Plant in the first place. Tracks such as "Hurting Kind (I've Got My Eyes on You)," "Nirvana," and "Tie Dye on the Highway" are pure hard rockers. Other highlights include "Anniversary" (which harkens back to Plant's earlier solo work), and the Middle Eastern-tinged "Watching You."

A majestic hard rock masterpiece, 1990's MANIC NIRVANA hit #13 and drew universal acclaim. Features the standouts "Big Love," "Hurting Kind," and "Tie Dye On The Highway." Plus, three bonus cuts from a rare Es Paranza single including "Oompa (Watery Bint)," "One Love," and "Don't Look Back.

Manic Nirvana essentially continued the revitalized hard rock crunch of Now & Zen. Unlike the previous record, Manic Nirvana played it a little closer to the vest, concentrating on a set of lean, driving riff-rockers instead of ponderous Led Zeppelin pomp. While the overall result is successful -- especially on the frenzied "Hurting Kind," the Technicolor stomp of "Tie Die on the Highway," and the affectionate rockabilly cover "Your Ma Said You Cried in Your Sleep Last Night" -- the album sounds like a holding pattern instead of a step forward.

Das Hoffen der Led-Zeppelin-Fans auf eine Reunion ist vergebens. Robert Plant (siehe AUDIO 4/90) mag nicht - und Manic Nirvana zeigt, warum er keinen Bock darauf hat, nicht haben muß: Mit dem jungen, agilen Quartett, das er um sich versammelt hat, kann er seinen Brachial-Rock genauso kraftvoll umsetzen. Die Drums knallen knochentrocken, die Gitarren fetzen - und Plant ist immer noch ein charismatischer Sänger (auch wenn seine Stimme bei der Produktion selten pur klingen darf). Natürlich fehlen auch softere Töne nicht.

Apart from his musical talent and the other, er, natural gifts that God has bestowed upon him, the thing that separates Robert Plant from nearly all of his contemporaries is that he keeps up with music like a true fan-while David Bowie attended one Cro-Mags gig and produced an album like Tin Machine, Plant has merged his classic sound with current ones and emerged with an album that comfortably straddles two decades. By far the most deliberately Zeppelin-ish record of his solo career ("Tie Dye" is total "Kashmir," and on "Your Ma" he reprises the first verses of "Black Dog" for no apparent reason), Manic Nirvana combines his last album's more commercial moments (the first track is a virtual rewrite of "White, Clean And Neat") with more adventurous and more metallic excursions. It's much more guitar-oriented (with thankfully fewer keyboards), and there's much less quasi-mystical shit and more BALLS! Throughout, the band (the same on his last tour) beautifully fulfills the music's considerable demands, veering between sizzling rock and elaborate textures with ease; the production by Plant and keyboardist Phil Johnstone is spot-on. Picks: "Big Love," "SSS & Q," `She Said" and the bluesy "Your Ma Said You Cried" for loud rock, "I Cried," "Nirvana," the mega-ballad "Anniversary" and "Watching You" for a dose of something else.
