"Emily tries, but misunderstands ..."
In 1997, EMI Records issued Pink Floyd's first three singles along with their respective B-sides as a CD EP entitled "Pink Floyd/1967 The First 3 Singles."
Collectors take note: The songs here are in their original, mono format.

Written by Craig Bailey

1997 CD release that compiles the 6 tracks that made up the first 3 7" singles for Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, originally released in 1967. Tracks: "Arnold Layne", "Candy And A Currant Bun", "See Emily Play", "Scarecrow", "Apples And Oranges", "Paint Box". An attractive item seeing as 'Candy','Scarecrow', and 'Apples' have previously been unavailable on CD, and the rest appear here in their original raucous mono-mix form (very different sounding than the 'digital remasters' that appear on the Relics CD). Nicely packaged in a paper gatefold sleeve that reproduces the original 7" sleeves. No need to wax endlessly on the influence of these recordings on the world of sound that followed (recorded or otherwise)."

Nearly eighteen minutes of bite-sized nuggets of Syd’s Pink Floyd, in the form of the A and B-sides of their first three singles, available free to buyers of two or more Floyd CDs or for the eminently reasonable sum of around £6 if you’ve got them all already. The reason for this largesse has something to do with the 30th anniversary reissue of "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" in its apparently original and superior mono mix - a bit retro even for me, although sadly EMI still haven’t bowed to public pressure and made it available on open reel again. Anyway, what you get for your six quid is four songs you’ve probably got already ("Arnold Layne", "See Emily Play", "Scarecrow" and "Paint Box") as well as two suitably unhinged rarities in the form of "Candy And A Currant Bun" and "Apples And Oranges". Suffice it to say that if the Floyd could get to number six in the popular music charts with something as melodically twisted and scary as "See Emily Play" you probably don’t need telling how out of it their flop singles and B-sides could sound. Still, for me the best track here is Rick Wright’s "Paint Box", a fine piano-led tale of urban lost-love, reinforcing my impression that Syd made his best music away from the artistic straightjacket of the beat ensemble format.

ARNOLD LAYNE

Arnold Layne had a strange hobby
Collecting clothes
Moonshine washing line
They suit him fine
On the wall hung a tall mirror
Distorted view, see through baby blue
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Now he's caught - a nasty sort of person.
They gave him time
Doors bang - chain gang - he hates it
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Don't do it again

CANDY AND A CURRANT BUN

Oh my, girl sitting in the sun
Go buy, candy and a currant bun
I like, to see you run
Like that......

Oooh, don't talk to me
Please just fuck with me
Please you know I'm feeling frail

It's true, sun shining very bright
It's you, who I'm gonna love tonight
Ice cream, taste good in the afternoon
Ice cream, taste good if you eat it soon

Oooh, don't touch me child
Please you know you drive me wild
Please you know I'm feeling frail

Don't try another cat
Don't go where other you must know why
Very very very frail

Oh my, girl sitting in the sun
Go buy, candy and a currant bun
I like, to see you run
Like that......

SEE EMILY PLAY

Emily tries but misunderstands, ah ooh
She often inclined to borrow somebody's dreams till tomorrow
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play
Soon after dark Emily cries, ah ooh
Gazing through trees in sorrow hardly a sound till tomorrow
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play
Put on a gown that touches the ground, ah ooh
Float on a river forever and ever, Emily
There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See Emily play

SCARECROW

The black and green scarecrow as everyone knows
Stood with a bird on his hat and straw everywhere.
He didn't care.
He stood in a field where barley grows.

His head did no thinking
His arms didn't move except then the wind cut up
Rough and mice ran around on the ground
He stood in a field where barley grows.

The black and green scarecrow is sadder than me
But now he's resigned to his fate
'Cause life's not unkind - he doesn't mind.
He stood in a field where barley grows.

APPLES AND ORANGES

Got a flip-top pack of cigarettes in her pocket
Feeling good at the top
Shopping in sharp shoes
Walking in the sunshine town feeling very cool
But the butchers and the bakers in the supermarket stores
Getting everything she wants from the supermarket stores
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges

Cornering neatly she trips up sweetly
To meet the people
She's on time again
And then
I catch her by the eye then I stop and have to think
What a funny thing to do 'cause I'm feeling very pink
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges

I love she
She loves me
See you
See you

Thought you might to know
I'm the lorry driver man
She's on the run
Down by the river side
feeding ducks by the afternoon tide
(quack quack)
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges

PAINT BOX

Last night I had too much to drink
Sitting in a club with so many fools
Playing to rules
Trying to impress but feeling rather empty
I had another drink
Drink - a - drink - a - drink - a - drink

What a way to spend that evening
They all turn up with their friends
Playing the game
But in the scene I should have been
Far away
Away - away - away - away - away
Getting up, I feel as if I'm remembering this scene before
I open the door to an empty room
Then I forget

The telephone rings and someone speaks
She would very much like to go out to a show
So what can I do - I can't think what to say
She sees through anyway
Away - away - away - away - away

Out of the front door I go
Traffic's moving rather slow
Arriving late, there she waits
Looking very angry, as cross as she can be
Be - a - be - a - be - a - be - a - be
Getting up, I feel as if I'm remembering this scene before
I open the door to an empty room
Then I forget
