The 16-song set The Very Best of Wilson Pickett released in 1993 of course paled in comparison to 1992's two-CD set, The Man and a Half: Best of Wilson Pickett. But even with its short length and dubious song choices, this does put the emphasis back into Pickett's strong offerings. "Land of 1000 Dances" and "In the Midnight Hour" both sound better here than on some lame soundtrack. The propulsive and great "Funky Broadway" has the perfect melody that was well suited to his vocal timbre. The unabashedly loud and Southern "She's Looking Good" proves that so-so Pickett was often stronger than the better-known classics. Although Pickett continued to make hard efforts, this set concentrates on his softer pop side with mixed results. A calmed-down Pickett shows up for such lame covers as "Hey Jude," "Fire and Water," and the lethal "Sugar Sugar." Thankfully, this set includes later Atlantic gems "Engine Number 9," "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You," and the obdurate and testy "Don't Knock My Love" that all have Pickett back to his senses. The CD version of The Very Best of Wilson Pickett also includes Bobby Womack's "I'm a Midnight Mover." Unlike many compilations of the type, the omissions make this set maddening. Great tracks, "Ninety Nine and a Half," "Soul Dance Number Three," and "She's So Good to Me," should have replaced the waste on here. Despite the often odd choices, this set works well.

IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR

I'm gonna wait 'till the midnight hour
That's when my love comes tumbling down

I'm gonna wait 'till the midnight hour
When there’ no one else around
I'm gonna take you girl and hold you
Do all things I told you in the midnight hour

I’m gonna wait till the stars come out
See them twinkle in your eyes
I'm gonna wait 'till the midnight hour
That's when my love begins to shine

You're the only girl I know
Really love you so in the midnight hour

I FOUND A LOVE

Yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I found a love, I found a love, I found a love
That I feel, whoa yeah,

I found a kiss
I just wanna tell ya that I can´t resist
I found a love that I need, whoa, yeah
And I wanna call her now, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it will be, there´s one thing
I wanna say right here, the way the woman walk
You set my little soul back, the ways you talk
She my heart desire and, oh, believe me,
I figured I would die if sometime I would call
Her in the midnight hour, yeah, yeah, OOW!
Don´t leave me baby
Yeah, yeah, OOW!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

634-5789 (SOULSVILLE, U.S.A.)
If you need a little lovin'
Call on me....(alright)
If you want a little huggin'
Call on me baby....(mmhmm)

Oh I'll be right here at home.
All you gotta do is pick up the telephone and dial now

(Chorus):

6-3-4-5-7-8-9 (that's my number!)
6-3-4-5-7-8-9

And if you need a little huggin'
Call on me...(that's all you gotta do now)
And if you want some kissin'
Call on me baby....(all right!)

No more lonely nights, when you'll be alone.
All you gotta do is pick up your telephone and dial now...

(Chorus)

Oh. I'll be right there.
Just as soon as I can. (oh)
And if I'll be a little bit late now,
I hope that you'll understand (whoa-yah...allright)

And if you need a little lovin'
Call on me....(Lord have mercy)
And if you want some kissin'
Call on me baby....(that's all you got to do now...)

No more lonely nights, when you'll be alone.
All you gotta do is pick up your telephone and dial now...

(Chorus) repeats 5 times.

IF YOU NEED ME

If you need me, I wantcha to call me
Said if you need me, all ya gotta do is call me
Don't wait too lo-o-ong if things go wrong
I-I-I'll be home, whoa-oh-oh, home

If you want me, send for me
I said if you want me, want, all ya gotta do is send for me
Don't wait too lo-o-ong, just-a pick up your phone
And I-I-I'll (hurry home where I belong)

[Spoken:]
People always said, darlin', that I didn't mean you no good.
And you would need me someday.
Way deep down in my heart I know I've done the best I could.
That's why I know that one of these days, it won't be long, you'll come walkin' through that same door (I'll hurry home).
And I can imagine in my mind that these are the words that you'll be sayin'.

I still love you, always thinkin' of you
And I still love, love, always thinkin' of you
Don't wait too lo-o-ong, just-a pick up your phone
And I-I-I'll hurry home (I'll hurry home)
Right there, where I belong

MUSTANG SALLY

Mustang Sally, think you better slow your mustang down.
Mustang Sally, think you better slow your mustang down.
You been running all over the town now.
Oh! I guess I'll have to put your flat feet on the ground.

All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.

One of these early mornings, oh, you gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.
I bought you a brand new mustang 'bout nineteen sixty six.
Now you come around signifying a woman, you don't wanna let me ride.

DON'T FIGHT IT

There you sit all by yourself
Everybody's dancin'; they can't a-help themselves
The groove is much too strong; they can't hold out long
So get up, don't fight it; you've got to (feel it, feel it)

You'd better get on up & get the groove
You know what, baby? I like the way you move
You do the thing like you ought to be, all right
So don't fight it, oh baby (feel it, feel it)

The way you jerk, the way you do the twine
You're too much, baby; I'd like to make you mine
& after the dance I'm gonna take you home
So don't fight it, baby you've got to (feel it, feel it)
Don't fight it (feel it, feel it) you've got to (feel it, feel it)

EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY

Everybody needs somebody
Everybody needs somebody to love
Someone to love (Someone to love)
Sweetheart to miss (Sweetheart to miss)
Sugar to kiss (Sugar to kiss)
I need you, you, you
I need you, you, you
I need you, you, you in the morning
I need you, you, you when my soul's on fire

Sometimes I feel, I feel a little sad inside
When my baby mistreats me, I never never have a place to hide, I need you!

Sometimes I feel, I feel a little sad inside
When my baby mistreats me, I never never have a place to hide, I need you,
you, you!
I need you, you, you!
I need you, you, you!
I need you, you, you!

You know people when you do find somebody, hold that woman, hold that
man, love him, hold him, squeeze her, please her, hold, squeeze and
please that person, give 'em all your love, signify your feelings with
every gentle caress, because it's so important to have the special
somebody to hold, kiss, miss, squeeze, and please.

Everybody needs somebody
Everybody needs somebody to love
Someone to love (Someone to love)
Sweetheart to miss (Sweetheart to miss)
Sugar to kiss (Sugar to kiss)
I need you, you, you
I need you, you, you
I need you, you, you in the morning
I need you, you, you when my soul's on fire

IT'S TOO LATE

(Doo-doo-doo's)

It's too late (too late, too late)
Said it's too late, yes it is (too late)
My love is gone away to stay (too late)
Don't you know it's too late now
Listen, children, I wanna tell you this
It's too late to cry (too late to cry)
It's too late to cry now (too late to cry)
My love is gone away, yes she has (too late)
Wo wo (too late) she has (too late)

(spoken):
I just guess that you're wonderin' why I always
sing a sad song
But you see, I had a woman who was very good to me

I can remember the times she used to sit down tell me these words:
Said, "Pickett, I want you to know I love you
from the bottom of my heart & whatever you need, I don't want you to go to
your mother, your father, your sister or your brother
I'll be a leadin' pull when you're fallin' down
When all your money's gone, I want you to know you can count on me"
But I didn't appreciate that woman then
You know what? I had to run & chase after every little girl around town
So finally one day I got home & I found my little girl gone
& people, you know it hurt me so bad (ha ha) I had to hang my little head & cry
Then I began to read the letter she left for me layin' there; it read like this, children

It's too late, she's gone, oh (she's gone)
"It's too late I'm gone away" (she's gone)
Ah yeah (too late) don't you know it, children
(too late)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Say it one more time (too late) listen (too late)
I wanna hear you understand what I'm talkin' about
(too late)
