Get Happy is a CD commemorating Oscar Peterson's earliest American recordings, made in 1950 following his stunning US debut at Carnegie Hall the previous September. All are duo performances: eight pair the pianist with bassist Major Holley, the other 11 with Ray Brown, who would stay with Peterson for 15 years. The various trios Peterson later formed with Brown (and beyond his tenure as well) have rightly acquired legendary status; yet no-one listening to these cuts could possibly argue that Peterson needed a third musician, be it guitarist or drummer. Both bassists operate as drummers too, driving the songs with lithe panache, and such is their harmonic skill (especially Brown's) that the music has a sonority and textural density that continue to shame many groups twice the size. In addition, Peterson may have been young and on a fast learning curve, but his technique was awesome, his harmonic knowledge already assured and his imagination prodigious. True, a degree of naivety is occasionally detectable in his ballad readings, but most are trenchant and charming, and the up-tempo numbers sizzle gloriously. Picking plums is difficult, but samplers might try the wonderful title track and "Robbins' Nest" with Holley, "Salute To Garner" and "Where Or When" with Brown.
