This album was first released in 1987, and it was her first after a gap of four years' silence since she left her first label, Bronze. Her six albums on Bronze, released between 1978 and 1983, were all classics to various degrees, and my expectations were high when I bought this album on CD in 1987. My first reaction was one of joy - Sally had hit upon a formula that sounded great from the word go. I lived with the album for a few months, and my initial enthusiasm for the album waned. Only one of the songs was composed by Sally alone - the rest were collaborations with the songwriting team behind Jennifer Rush' superhit THE POWER OF LOVE. Now, that's all well and good, but I grew tired of the songs, the lyrics and, perhaps more than anything else: the production, the sound. Too perfect, too clinical, too... boring. Sally tries her best to infuse the songs with some life, but it's heavy going.

So, is this a bad album? Certainly not. It's just too polished, too mainstream and, dare I say it, too dull? Sally herself has not been complimentary when speaking of this album and the ones that followed - INSTINCTS (1988), NATASHA (1990) and THE FLAME (1992). I feel the middle one, NATASHA, is one of her best albums ever, but the other two are not among my favourites. Not anymore.

But: Having said all this, I still like the album to a certain degree. Any piece of music made by Sally is, by definition, interesting to me. So, does anyone know whether this 2002 reissue of the album featured remastered sound? The original release was stylishly packaged, but the sound was not all that impressive. Please let the world know if you have this version of the album. If the sound is upgraded, I shall certainly buy my second copy of this album.
