There aren't actually any tubular bells on Tubular Bells II. The bell sound is a sampled bell altered digitally to produce the right effect.

The "Strolling Player" credited as the M.C. of "The Bell" is British actor Alan Rickman.

[Explaining the choice of voice for "The Bell"] "We tried various people, including a computer voice from 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, we tried a Liverpool voice, like one of the Beatles' voices; we tried like a Disney World type of voice, you know, like a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs type of voice, in order to make it humorous; but in the end, we wanted to give it this sort of real British, almost Shakespearian type of atmosphere, so we went for Alan Rickman."

Mike Oldfield about this album

Like it's predecessor, the composer plays virtually all the instruments, including guitars, mandolin, banjo, piano, organ, synthesizers, percussion, and -- of course -- tubular bells. II opens with quiet TB passages that echo the original and use it as a launch pad without merely reproducing what has come before. The 70 minute composition flows nicely from ambient movements to those featuring Oldfield's fluid electric guitar work. Twenty years later, this reprise risked being over-pretentious; instead, Oldfield incorporates passages that are downright playful and irreverent.

Roch Parisien, All-Music Guide

"...elegiacally pastoral, yet animated by contrasting currents of sunburst awe and Goonish jocularity--just one pretty tune after another..."

Q Magazine 10/92, p.81, 3 Stars - Good

"...ten minutes longer than the original but never tedious, the new work has an up-to-the-minute flavor...your cynicism will give way to joy over Oldfield's success at pulling this off with both humor and respect..."
