The Millennium Bell is meant to be a music trip through certain historical events of the last 2000 years.



"It's a journey through history that starts with Christ, continues with the Incas, Excalibur and King Arthur, the discovery of America, slavery, classic romantic music, the Second World War, space travel, and finishes with the new Millenium Bells. This is a clear mixture of styles, with an orchestra of 50 musicians, pianos, African music, rap - all kind of things. Even some words from Churchill and from Anne Frank's diary"

Since late February Mike has been working on the Millennium Bell, which is a musical rendition of the last 2000 years, currently planned for release by WEA on 29 November. Mike has taken a number of events from the last 2000 years and set this to music. The album is a single piece of music broken into 12 sections lasting just over 45 minutes. There are a number of different styles, a couple of vocal pieces such as Sunlight Shining Through. Cloud A Millenium concert is being planned for the Siegessaule Square in Berlin at the turn of the Century, although there are some obvious logistical difficulties. More details to be posted as they become available.

Süßer die Glocken nie klingen, als zur Millenniumszeit! Das dachte sich auch Glocken-Experte Mike Oldfield, der bereits 1973 mit Tubular Bells das Standarwerk zum Thema "Glockenspiele in den Zeiten von New Age" veröffentlicht hat. Angesichts der Jahrtausendwende durchbricht Oldfield sogar seinen gemächlichen Release-Rhythmus und läßt den beiden unlängst veröffentlichten Alben Tubular Bells III und Guitars mit The Millennium Bell noch eine Retrospektive der vergangenen 2000 Jahre folgen. Ähnlich wie bei der instrumentalen Chronologie zur Entstehung der Gitarre wandert Oldfields musikalischer Blick auch auf dem neuen Album durch einzelne Episoden der Menschheitsgeschichte: Christi Geburt und der damit verbundene Beginn unserer Zeitrechnung, die Inka-Kultur Perus, die Entdeckung Amerikas und der nachfolgende Sklavenhandel, die Regierung der Dogen in Venedig, die Romantik, Chicagos Gangster, der Zweite Weltkrieg und das digitale Informationszeitalter - dies sind die Stationen, denen sich Oldfield zumeist mit orchestralem Bombast und einer kleinen Schwäche für große Gesten widmet. So springt er vom Gospel zu Rondo Veneziano, von Musical-Anklängen zu Party-Techno, von Krimimelodien zu afrikanischen Gesängen. Seine Gäste sind dabei (neben der Gitarre sowie unzähligen Computern) das London Session Orchestra, The London Handel Choir, The Grant Gospel Choir, Percussionist Gota Yashiki und DJ Pipi. Eine ambitionierte Zeitreise zum Ab- oder Entspannen.
